A farmer had some little dogs for sale, from $30 to $50. He was painting a sign advertising the dogs. At that time, a cute boy appeared and said, “Sir, I want to buy one of your dogs.”
“Well,” said the farmer, “these dogs need much money.” The boy said, “I’ve got 89 cents. Is that enough at least to take a look?”
“OK,” said the farmer. Then he called the dogs over. Four little balls appeared from the doghouse. Then the boy noticed something else inside the doghouse.
Slowly another ball appeared, and this one was smaller. It was walking strangely, trying to stand up properly. “I want that one,” the boy said, quickly pointing to the smaller dog.
“Boy, you don’t want that dog. He’ll never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would,” said the farmer.
Then the boy rolled up(卷起) one leg of his trousers. His leg had a steel brace(支架) on it.
Looking back up at the farmer, he said, “You see, I don’t run too well myself, and he’ll need someone who understands.”
“How much?” asked the boy. “No charge(收费),” replied the farmer. “There’s no charge for love and understanding.”

My family had an unusual connection(连接)with the queen. When the queen visited China in 1986, my grandfather was the president(校长)of Yunnan Minzu University. He was very happy to meet her.
I found out about this when I was 10, and I saw a picture of the queen and my grandfather. Then I got the idea of writing to the queen. I wrote a letter to her on the subject of my grandfather. Luckily, I got a reply letter(回信)from the queen’s lady-in-waiting(女侍臣)a day before my birthday. It was one of the most special moments of my life. I still remember reading the letter aloud to my classmates at the time. I have cherished(珍惜)the letter ever since and now I do so even more. I will keep this memento(纪念品)from Queen Elizabeth forever.

Young people said that this game not only gets people to exercise but also makes them think of their childhood. It also helps with stress (压力) and changes running into a fun social (社会的) game.
On September 24, I went to take part in the activity with Patrick McCarthy, a writer for Teens, at the Olympic Forest Park in Beijing. There were about 30 people. Most of us didn’t know each other. The game had two rounds (轮). In the first round, 5 people were “cats” and the others were “mice”. With 5 minutes for the “mice” to run and hide (藏), the “cats” found them using the locations they shared on a map app. The second round was a group game.
We all played hide-and-seek when we were little. When I asked MaCarthy to go with me, he wanted to know, “What’s the point of playing this game as a grown-up (成年人)?”
It turned out to be an interesting activity for him. The use of GPS made this childhood game much more fun. “It was a creative way of bringing something new to old games with technology (科技),” said MaCarthy. “It is a good way to meet new people and even make friends, as one needs to work together with new people.”
For me, it’s good that this activity got me running as I don’t like walking out in my life. In fact, if the park is smaller, I can have more fun. When I see the “mice” are so far away from me, I just want to give up. On the other hand, if the “cats” can’t catch me, I will not feel so excited.

A group of high school students from the United States has planted hope by cleaning up an empty lot (一块地) in their neighborhood.
The students are from Buchtel High School in Akron, Ohio. The empty lot, which is owned by a local bank, was filled with grass and poison ivy (毒葛). As a project for the school’s biohealth (生物健康) class, eight students decided to turn the lot into a space that will improve the mental (心理的) and emotional (情绪的) health of the people who live near it.

Fifteen years ago, I took a summer vacation in Italy. After climbing up a hill, I stopped to catch my breath, enjoy the beautiful view (风景), and then take the best photo.
Unluckily, just as I took out my camera, a woman came from behind, and planted herself right in front of me. Like me, this woman was here to stop and enjoy the view.
Patient as I was, after about 15 minutes, I grew upset. I could have asked her to move, but something stopped me from doing so. She seemed to enjoy herself.
Another 15 minutes passed and I grew bored. The woman was still there. I decided to take the photo anyway. And now when I look at it, I think she made the photo interesting. The view, beautiful on its own, comes to life because this woman is in it.
