How would you like to build a time machine? Paper, sticks, glue and string are all you need. Put them together to build a kite. A kite connects you to the past.
No one knows who flew the first kite. It was probably someone in China or perhaps Indonesia. Indonesian fishermen hung fishhooks(鱼钩)on kites and sent them out to sea to catch fish. Starting 2000 years ago, Chinese farmers flew kites to welcome the New Year and bring good luck to Earth.
In China, people also used kites during wartime. One Chinese story tells how soldiers put noise makers on kites and flew them at night over the enemy camp. The enemies were frightened by the noise and ran away.
About 1,300 years ago, Chinese travelers took kites to Japan. Soon kites filled the skies there. Kites reached Thailand about 700 years ago. During floods, Thai farmers flew kites over their fields. They hoped the kites would drive away the clouds and stop the rain. Over time, kites flew their way out of Asia. Today, kites are a passion all over the world. Kite fans meet at festivals in many parts of the world and have great fun.
Over the years, kites have also helped people understand the natural world. In 1749, for example, thermometers(温度计)were tied to kites to measure temperatures. In 1906, cameras hanging from kites took pictures of San Francisco, California after an earthquake. The photos helped people plan what to do.
Kites also helped inventors find out how to make airplanes. The Wright brothers studied how kites flew, which helped them make the first successful airplane.
Since the ancient Chinese first set their kites into the air, people have loved flying kites. Kites give us ways to celebrate, relax and explore. So go fly a kite! Enjoy the feeling of wonder that kite flyers have felt for centuries.

The International Climate Champions (ICC) project began in 2007. It gives young people of school age a chance to speak publicly on climate change and to encourage action to reduce its effects. Each country involved selects three teenagers to be Climate Champions, who take part in local and international activities.
Climate Champion Irene Sanna lives on the Italian island of Sardinia. Irene is interested in solar energy, and also believes that Sardinia should use the waves around its coast to produce electricity. That would reduce the need to import oil and gas for lighting, heating and cooking. “Energy conservation is our future. We must make plans to save our coast, which still has no pollution. We must protect the animals, birds and fish in danger from global warming. And we must recycle.”
Chinese student Ding Yinghan is the Beijing Climate Champion. Ding feels it is unfair to say that just one country-his own-is causing climate change. He says the air pollution that leads to global warming comes from many parts of the world, including poorer countries that are now growing more quickly. He believes the only way to prevent the situation getting even worse is for rich and poor countries to work together.
Sophia Angelis, a junior student in Lake Arrowhead, California, is a US Champion. She’s against young people’s general lack of interest in politics and feels they need to discuss the problems that really matter to their generation. She has written about the need for action on poverty and her articles have been published in her local newspaper. Sophia strongly believes that climate change is an important issue for her generation. For her, changes in the way teenagers behave are an important way of influencing choices that are made by parents.
In 2008, the Climate Champions attended the International Conference of Environment Ministers in the Japanese city of Kobe. At present, 13 countries are involved in the ICC, and more countries are expected to join soon.

Some other cities in the southern part of China, are also becoming “thirsty”. Compared with northern areas, southern areas have more rain and are close to more rivers and lakes. So why are they still short on water?
In big cities like Shenzhen and Guangzhou, populations are growing fast. As a result, people and factories need more and more water. Each person in Shenzhen has less than 200 cubic meters of water each year. It’s 1/12 of the country’s average (平均水平). According to the UN, it is an “absolute (完全的)water shortage” when the number is below 500 cubic meters.
Weather change is making the water problem worse. For example, most cities in Guangdong depend on the Dongjiang River as their main source (来源) of water. In 2021, the river was reported to be drying up. Because of weather change, there’s also less snow in the mountains of Tibet. The snow has long been the source of water for many areas in China. Those mountains might provide less water in the future.
There are other reasons for water shortages. For example, water pollution makes it harder to get clean drinking water. Factories and farms don’t use water efficiently(有效地). Some cities have enough rainfall, but don’t have big lakes or reservoirs (水库) to store water. The water just goes into the sea.
March 22 is World Water Day. The theme this year is “groundwater ”. We can’t see groundwater. It’s under our feet. But it plays an important role in our lives. About 98 percent of Earth’s fresh water is groundwater. It is 60 times as plentiful (丰富的 ) as the fresh water in lakes and rivers. But in many places, people overuse and pollute groundwater. We should pay more attention to this hidden water resource.

This very day last year, oh, at this very place,
A pretty face outshone the flowers of peach trees.
I do not know today where shines the pretty face,
Only the pretty flowers still smile in the vernal breeze.
The peach blossom makes people think of a shy woman blushing (脸红). Because of this, the peach blossom is related to romance (浪漫) in China. And if your eyes are the shape of peach petals (花瓣), you have a pair of “taohuayan”. And you probably have peach blossom luck.
