【推荐1】On the weekend, I went to buy a few things for my whole family. I picked up so many things that I couldn’t hold them in my hand. I thought I needed a trolley (手推车) to make it easier. So I went to get one.

Later, I noticed a lady carrying lots of things, just like I had been a few moments earlier. As I passed her, she dropped a few of her things, so I helped her pick them up. She thanked me. She was much older than me, possibly over 80 years old.

A voice spoke up at my ear. The voice said ,“Offer her your trolley, Nicole. You are just half her age. You can manage (应付) what you have more easily compared to what she has.” Then I turned back and gave my trolley to her.   

Do you want to know why I do this kind of thing? Yes, to be kind. But there is another reason. I have this habit of putting myself in another person’s shoes. I thought if this would happen to me in more than 30 years, how much I’d be thankful for this kindness.

It surprises me how simple it is to be kind. I never used to be like this. Today, I have changed, and I’ve become ready to do it. I hope that we can all be kind.

【推荐2】Two men were staying in the same room in a hospital. One man was so sick that he could not even move his body or look around the room. The other man could move, but was also very ill.

Over time, the two men became good friends. They shared lots of things together and even talked about what they hoped to do after they got better. But there was one thing about the room that was special for both of them. The man who could move would look out of the room’s only window, describing the scenery outside for his friend. He told him about the people walking by, the weather — anything that might interest a man who had not seen the world beyond his bed for some time.

One day, when a nurse came to check on the two men, she found that the man who often looked out of the window had died in his sleep. Sadly, she informed the other man that his friend had died and called for nurses to take the dead man away. The other man asked to be moved to the dead man’s bed so that he could look out of the window himself. The nurses moved him to the other bed. However, the man found that there was no window at all — just a blank wall.

The nurses explained that the dead man had been blind. He had never actually seen anything outside the window at all — but he described beautiful scenes to encourage his friend. Sometimes all we need in life is a little encouragement — even if it comes from an unlikely place.

Then a kind old lady called Widow（寡妇） Douglas invited me to live with her. My life changed after I went to live with the widow. She gave me a bed to sleep in and bought new clothes for me. She read stories to me and taught me how to eat at a table.

Widow Douglas sent me to school every day. I didn’t like going there at first because learning was very difficult. But when I could read and write a bit, I didn’t mind going. The hardest things for me were eating my meals at the table and sleeping in a soft bed. Sometimes I ran away and spent a few days in the woods. I felt free there and I was happy. I fished and hunted all day. At night I slept under the stars...

On a winter morning, I woke up and there was snow on the ground. On my way to school I saw some footprints（脚印） outside the widow’s house. There was a cross on the heel of the left one. My heart jumped. Only one person wore boots with a cross on the left heel! Pap!

“He’s heard about my money,” I thought. “And he wants it!”

How is everything going?

Here’s a photo of my father and my uncle Andrew. This is my father, Carol Smith. He’s in a green jacket. He likes sports and his favorite sport is basketball. But ping-pong is difficult for him. The one next to my father is Andrew. He is my father’s brother. He likes sports too. He can play baseball and basketball very well. He likes watching sports games on TV. He always plays sports with my father and me. It’s relaxing for us to play sports. But he has only one basketball.
