Do you know something about tree rings (年轮)? Do you know they can tell us what the weather was like even hundreds of years ago?

A tree will grow well in a climate (气候) with lots of sunshine and rainfall (雨量). And little sunshine or rainfall will limit (限制) the growth of a tree. We can see the change of the climate by studying the tree rings. For example, if you want to find out the weather of ten years ago, you should count (数数) the rings of a tree from the outside to the inside. If the tenth ring is far from the eleventh ring, then we’re sure that it was sunny and rainy most of that year. If it is close to the eleventh ring, then the climate that year was bad.

Tree rings are important not only for studying the history of the weather but also for studying the history of man. Many years ago there lived a lot of people at a place in New Mexico. But now you can find only sand but no trees, no people. What happened?

A scientist studied the rings of the dead trees there. He found that the people had to leave because they had cut down all the trees to make fires and buildings. Because all the trees had gone, the people there had to move.

A.The history of the tree.B.How the tree grew up.
C.The owner of the tree.D.How the weather was before.
4. Why did the people leave the place in New Mexico?
A.Because there were too many dangerous animals.B.Because they found a better place.

1】Garbage sorting is a big issue worldwide. In recent years, some Chinese cities have been working hard on it.

Shanghai has worked with Alipay to create a “green account (账户)” service for its residents (居民). Account holders get points by correctly sorting their garbage. Through the Alipay app, they can exchange the points for milk, phone cards and other products. The city is asking all of its residents to sort their garbage into four groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry.

Wet waste is also known as household waste. “They are things you don’t want but that pigs can eat,” Guangzhou Daily explained. Paper, metal (金属), glass and other things that can be reused are recyclable waste. Harmful waste includes things like medicine, batteries and fluorescent bulbs (荧光灯泡). Finally, any waste that’s not wet, recyclable or harmful will go in the “dry waste” bin.

Many other Chinese cities are also using this method to sort their garbage. For example, Shenzhen has been sorting its garbage into the same four groups since 2012. Students there also receive waste-sorting guidebooks that they must study.

China is improving its waste-sorting efforts. There is still a long way to go. But it’s never too late to learn how to sort your trash properly and protect the environment.

If you don’t sort your garbage, all of it will go to a landfill (垃圾填埋场) and be buried together. These landfills can take up large areas of ground that could have been used for planting trees or crops. The electronic waste you throw away, such as batteries, can pollute the soil and groundwater. Other pieces of garbage, like the metal part of a pen, can be used to make other things if they are properly recycled.

文章大意:本文主要讲述了人们的基因来自父母,大多数人像母亲,但是新的研究发现,我们的基因受到父亲的影响比母亲的更多。

【推荐3】“You are just like your mother.” This phrase is often said by many. As we grow older, we may notice that we’re getting more like our mother. Yet surprisingly, new research has found that most people are more similar to their father.

A team of scientists from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in the US found that we get equal amounts of genes (基因) from mother and father. But we use more of the DNA we get from our father.

The study helps us to explain who we are to a certain degree. And more importantly, it helps us to find out whether we are likely to develop diseases. For example, if we get the gene for a disease from our mother, it may not be as strong as if we had got it from our father.

We know that there are 95 genes influenced by our parents, said lead researcher Professor Fernando Pardo-Manuel de Villena. These are called imprinted genes (印记基因). But now, the study has found that there are thousands of other genes that have come from our parents.

For the study, the scientists picked out three different kinds of mice with different genes. The mice then gave birth to nine babies each. When they all reached adulthood, the team then measured every single gene of their DNA.

They found an imbalance that turned toward their father. Villena also said that the recent study was the first to show that mammals (哺乳动物) are more similar to their fathers than mothers. “This is an exceptional new research finding that opens the door to a completely new area of exploration in human genetics,” he said.

1. What is the new finding?
A.We are born to look more like our father.
B.We are more like our mother when we grow up.

A.The finding helps us know possible diseases.
B.We get exactly the same diseases from parents.
C.We are supposed to be stronger than our parents.
D.We don’t get the gene of a disease from our mother.
3. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
