Toucans (巨嘴鸟), a colorful bird. Take a look at these facts about toucans, and you may learn something you didn’t know before.
Where do they live?
Toucans can be found in the tropical (热带的) forests of South America. Their home is still in danger. The government asks people not to buy rainforest wood. It’s important to protect the habitat (栖息地) of toucans.
What do they look like?
Toucans have a black body and a white neck. The colorful beak is about 8 inches long. It makes up 1/3 of the bird’s total length. It may look pretty big, but thankfully, for the toucan, the beak is not too heavy. It is made of keratin (角蛋白), which makes it much lighter than you would think just by looking.
What do they eat and drink?
Toucans use their beaks to eat different kinds of fruits, which happens to be the kind of food they eat most often. Sometimes toucans will choose to snack on insects, frogs, and the eggs of their birds. Toucans get most of their water from the fruit they eat, so they don’t need to drink too much water.
Believe it or not!
Toucans can be rather lazy birds and they like to stay in one place generally. They don’t fly high up in the sky or very far away from home. They enjoy staying in trees with their delicious fruit to eat.
Wild cats are the predators of toucans in the rainforest. Other predators include larger birds. Some snakes may attack smaller toucans but typically are more interested in the toucans’ eggs instead.

In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room.” I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf. The cover of a book caught my eyes. There on the book’s cover was a beagle which looked the same as my dog. I had recently had a beagle. He was my best friend, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the time to care for him. I never forgot my beagle.
My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library.
Under a tree, I started to read about Amos, I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion(团聚), on and on, until my own lost dog and I were running together.
My mother’s call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something had read a book, and I had loved reading that book.
I never told my mother what happened that summer, but she saw a slow but remarkable progress in my classroom performance. And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books.

The largest ones are only about 1.4 mm long. Each of their eight legs ends with a claw (爪) . They also have sharp mouths.
Some of the places they live may surprise you! They live deep down in the ocean. It’s too dark to see well, and the water from up above is very heavy. But tiny water bears can survive in such a difficult environment. In space, there is no air, water or food. But water bears can live there! Astronauts took some water bears outside the spaceship. Surprisingly, most of them lived. Some even laid eggs. The eggs even hatched into healthy babies!
There is no rain in dry valleys of Antarctica for about two million years. But water bears can survive in such a place! How? First, they curl into a ball. Then they do nothing. They can stay in this way for many years! When they get wet again, they uncurl and start to move around. Sometimes wind or water moves away when they curl up in a ball.
Besides the places mentioned above, water bears also live around us, but we need some effort to find them. If we are careful and lucky enough, maybe we can find one.

In Sydney, Australia, a group of children go to the shelter (收容所)RSPCA and read books to animals there. One of the books is Clifford the Big Red Dog, it tells a story of a red dog Clifford. Clifford gets lots of love after a young girl takes him home.
RSPCA often holds the activity of reading books to animals. It can improve young volunteers’ reading skills in a fun way. Many young readers feel embarrassed about making mistakes while reading. Reading to animal friends makes them relaxed.

Otters(水獭)are cute water animals. These days, keeping otters as pets is getting popular. In Japan, some “otter cafés(咖啡馆)”are open for business. People can pay to play with the otters there and to take photos with them. In Indonesia, people go swimming with their pet otters and take funny videos. These photos and videos posted online have interested more people to buy otters as pets. However, these enjoyable photos and videos hide the damage(损害)that the online trade is doing to otters. In fact, wild otters are facing many dangers-they have long been hunted(猎杀)for their coats; in some places, fishermen have been killing otters in order to stop them from eating fish; and now, the online pet trade has become another big problem for otters.
In the wild, baby otters usually stay with their mothers during their first year of life. According to a report, 70% of the otters sold online are under one year old. These baby otters have been stolen from their mothers.
Otters are very social. They live in family groups of up to 15 in the wild. Keeping an otter as a pet can make it very sad and lonely. When they swim, they need enough space. Their owners’ bathtubs(浴缸)or pools are nowhere near as large as the bodies of water in the wild.
On the other hand, otters simply don’t make good pets. They have a very special fishy smell. If they are kept indoors, they will leave a lot of waste around the house. This would make the smell even more unpleasant. Besides, when otters are unhappy, they will make loud noises and even attack(攻击)people. If a person is hurt by an otter, he or she needs to go to hospital at once.
So, we should stop the otter trade and never share photos and videos about them online.

In May 2022, a sing and dance drama about Yumai was on. It makes more people know about the town with the least population in China. Yumai sits at the southern foot of the Himalayas and near the border (边境) with India. Before 1996, only three people lived there. For this reason, it was once called a “Three-people Township”. When Xi Wang was born, she weighed just 100 grams (克) and looked like a white mouse. At four months old, she weighed about eight kilograms and started to go outside for the first time. Eight months later, she was not a small baby any more and weighed over 35 kilograms.
In the beginning, Xi Wang drank her mother’s milk. When she was six months old, she began to eat bamboo. When she was 20 months old, she learnt to look after herself.
Sadly, giant (大) pandas face serious problems in the wild. For example, it is very difficult for pandas to have babies, and many baby pandas die when they are very young. Also, giant pandas live mainly on a special kind of bamboo. However, the bamboo forests are becoming smaller and smaller. As a result, pandas may not have enough food to eat.
Giant pandas are now in danger. We should take action right away. Here are some ideas.
◎ help pandas have more babies
◎ build more panda reserves (保护区)
◎ make laws to protect pandas
There are now only about 1,600 pandas in the wild. If we do nothing soon there may be none left! However, we do believe that where there is Xi Wang, there is hope.

Years ago, there were many pandas in China. But now the number of pandas falls down so quickly. Pandas are in great danger. On the one hand, because of hunting, some people killed them for some reasons. From 1980 to 1990, about 100 pandas lost their lives. On the other hand, the balance of nature is destroyed(被破坏)and the weather is getting warmer and warmer. Pandas have no bamboo to eat.
At present, people are taking an important measure to save the pandas. People want to find a home for them. They decided to feed them green vegetables like lettuce and cabbage. Ron Mezich, an expert, said, “We’re making a difference.” So far, they have served up more than 193,000 pounds of lettuce to hungry manatees. But as the weather is getting warm, the program is expected to end soon.
Manatees are huge sea animals that only eat sea grass and other plants that live in the sea. That’s one reason why they’re sometimes called “sea cows”. Since 1967, Florida’s manatees have been on the US government’s list of endangered animals. Most dangers to manatees come from humans. One of the biggest problems facing the animals are boats. Manatees are curious and fairly slow. That has led to thousands of manatees being hit or killed by boats. At one point, there were only about 2,000 manatees left in Florida. With protection, the number increased. In 2016, there were more than 6,000 manatees.
However, as sea grass began to disappear, the number of manatees keeps going down again. Warming seas with polluted water have created huge growths of algae (藻) on the ocean’s surface. The algae blocks the sunlight that allows the sea grass to grow. For example, in Indian River Lagoon, where manatees often go in the winter, about 90% of the sea grass beds there have died off. Long term, Florida will work to help restore (恢复) sea grass beds. But that will take time. Scientists still worry that hundreds more manatees could starve this winter.
