In the future we may not need to have money in our pockets. Is life easier when people don’t need to carry any money at all? Is money heavy to carry? Is it safe to carry money? Maybe in the future each of us will have only one small credit card (信用卡). We will use it to buy all the things easily.
Of course, we may still have some of the same problems with cards we now have with money. For example, we always lose money. Maybe we will lose the cards. Maybe someone will take the cards. Someone may make a card that looks like our cards. Since we can’t buy anything without our cards, the credit cards may be no better than money.
Is there something easier to use than credit cards? Each of us has a thumbprint (拇指指纹).
No two thumbprints are the same. Maybe someday the government will keep people’s thumbprints with a number. When you want to buy something, you will put your thumb on a machine or a computer. Each store or business will possess one. Everyone’s thumbprints will be in the computer. It will be hard to lose our thumbprints! It will be hard for someone to steal it or to make one like it.

A team from Toll Free Forwarding, a US company, built a 3D model of what a human might look like in the year 3000. Her name is Mindy. She looks a little bit scary. The company said the model showed how technology (科技) will change human bodies in less than 800 years.
For example, Mindy’s hands look different from ours. It seems that she always has a cellphone in her hand. That’s called “text claw”, according to the team. Mindy also has a much wider neck. It’s called “tech neck”. It’s from looking down at the phone for too long. Muscles (肌肉) in our necks need to be stronger to support (支撑) our heads.
Mindy also has another eyelid (眼皮). It can protect the eyes from the blue light of the screens. Her skull (头骨) is thicker. It protects the brain from the radiation (辐射) of computers and phones. Technology is so helpful that humans think less. That’s why humans may also have smaller brains in the future. Will you spend less time on your computer and cellphone after seeing this scary model?

There are many reasons why you are not able to fall asleep. You might be excited by something you did that day. You might be excited about what you’re going to do next day. Maybe you can’t fall asleep because you don’t like sleeping all alone in your room. All of these reasons are normal. However, there are some steps you can take to help you fall asleep.
One thing that can help is talking to a parent or another trusted adult about what you’re thinking about at bedtime. For example, if you’re nervous about taking a test, it can really help to tell somebody. Knowing that somebody has heard you can help ease (宽慰) your mind so that you can rest.
It also helps to sleep in a comfortable bed in a quiet and cool room. If there’s anything in your room that makes you feel afraid at night, like a picture that looks strange in the dark, be sure to ask one of your parents if it can be moved.
If you are usually sleepless around bedtime, you can take a warm bath, or listen to a story at least 30 minutes before you want to go to sleep. It also helps to go to sleep at the same time every night. As a result, your body will get the message that it’s almost time to sleep.

Then Becky had an idea! “What if I trade you one glove for one of your scarves?”, Becky said. “Then both of our necks would be warm, and we’d each have one warm hand. We could put the other hand in our pockets.”
“Good idea!” said Steve.
After they shared the scarf and glove, they began to feel warmer.
A few minutes later Mrs. Brown appeared. “Did I just see you barter?” she asked.
Becky and Steve looked puzzled(迷惑的). “What’s barter?” Becky asked.
“Barter means trade things without using money”, Mrs. Brown explained. “You two traded a scarf and a glove so you could be warm. Did you know that traders bartered for thousands of years?”
“Really? How did it work?” Steve asked.
Mrs. Brown said, “Well, traders who had too much of one thing, such as salt or cloth or pigs, would exchange them with other traders for other things that they needed. Trading grew and developed, but it had problems.”
“Like what?” Becky asked.
“Suppose you raised chickens. You could trade the chickens and eggs for what you needed. But if the chickens got away...”
“I wouldn’t have anything to trade!”
“Exactly!” said Mrs. Brown.
“Now you see why people began to use money to trade.” Mrs. Brown added.
“Is it true that silver and gold coins were used before paper money?” Steve asked.
“Yes, but they were too heavy to carry.” Mrs. Brown said. “People then began to write promises on paper instead of trading coins. That was how paper money got its start.”
“Wow!” said Becky, “but I guess people still trade sometimes, the way Steve and I did today! "

As time passed, families had more products (产品) than they needed, such as animals and crops. So they needed to trade with others. They began to use money to make it easier. However, it was not like the money we use today. They used shells, rice, salt or large stones.
During the 600 BC, people began using coins as money. Because they were easier to carry than goods (货物), countries began to make coins as their money.
The Chinese were the first to use paper money, probably in the 11th century. An Italian traveler, Marco Polo, saw the Chinese use paper money when he visited China in the 1200s. After his travel, he told the western people what he saw. But European countries didn’t start using paper money till the1600s.
Today people have many ways to pay for things, such as coins, paper money and cards. Some prefer to pay by card. That’s because paying with a card is easier and safer than carrying around a lot of “real” money.
