Edinburgh zoo may have to send giant pandas back to China
These days, Chinese people are happy to hear the good news that the Edinburgh zoo in England may have to send the giant pandas Tian Tian and Yang Guang back to China because it’s short of money. During the past nine years, the two pandas have made people happy and let people protect wild animals.
David Field, Edinburgh Zoo’s leader, told China Daily that the cost of renting (租借) the pandas to England was one million pounds a year, not including the high daily living cost of pandas. The Zoo has to be closed for three months because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This has caused a lot of money loss for the zoo, which makes most of its money from visitors. Although the zoo is now open again, it has lost about two million dollars since last year.
The two pandas arrived in England on Dec 4th, 2011. They are seen as the symbol of the friendship (友情) between China and the UK. Tian Tian and Yang Guang are so popular with the local people and make more visitors come to local zoos. “This will be a great loss. Our family love seeing the pandas when we often visit the zoo. They are amazing and I want to cry when I hear the heartbreaking news”, an English boy wrote on the internet.

What’s your plan for the winter holiday? The week-long Spring Festival holiday starting on February 1 is usually a busy film season in China. There will be six new films. I plan to watch a film with popcorn. There are many things that I would like to do in my holidays. On January 22, I’ll take part in a winter camp. There I can learn some skills and practice English with the foreign teacher. I’ll stay there for a week. I can’t wait to have an exciting time. Oh, English is my weakness. |
This winter, I’ll be a volunteer (志愿者) with Rainbow Project. We’ll work in the City Library. We help people find books they want and tidy up the books they return. It’s also a good chance to read more good books. What a meaningful job! We plan a long trip to Harbin which has the most beautiful snow views. I think it’s going to be an enjoyable holiday. 【推荐3】Think your school rules are boring? Take a look at these rules.
No hugging | Some schools in Portland and Florida started the rule — no hugging in 2010. Two years later some schools in New Jerseyand Brooklyn made the same rule. The reason is clear — to avoid “unsuitable interactions (不适当的互动)” between students. |
No bags into the classroom | One high school in Michigan doesn’t allow bags into the classroom at all. The school asks students to return to their lockers (有锁存物柜) between classes for their books in order to make sure they are safe in lunchrooms and classrooms. |
No Ugg boots (Ugg靴子) | It might get very cold in winter in Pennsylvania, but students there aren’t allowed to wear their Ugg boots into class. It’s to stop them from hiding things like mobile phones in the boots. |
No balls | A Toronto school doesn’t allow its students to bring any hard balls to school. Why? A parent was taken to hospital with a concussion (脑震荡) after being hit by a ball. |
