In the past, the Silk Road started at Chang’an (now Xi’an) and ended in Europe. It was about 6,500 kilometers long and went across 1/4 of the world.
The Silk Road got its name in the 19th century because Chinese silk was famous, and traders carried it to other places along this road. Scientists at Brown University, US, found that school-aged children learn new knowledge and skills faster than grown-ups. This has something to do with a chemical(化学物质) called GABA in our brains. It reduces brain noise so that we can learn things more easily. It also makes new knowledge stay longer in our heads.
The scientists scanned(扫描) the brains of children (8—11 years old) and adults (18—35 years old) before, during, and after doing a learning task. It turned out that when children learn new things, the number of GABA rises quickly. But there’s little change in adults’ brains. This tells us why children are better learners than adults.
The finding, the scientists said, should encourage teachers and parents to let children learn anything from riding a bike, playing an instrument or learning times tables(乘法表) in their childhood. It could also be used to help adults learn faster by increasing the amount of GABA in their brains.

When people catch sharks, they cut off their fins and throw the sharks back into the ocean. This is not only cruel, but also harmful to the environment. Without a fin, a shark can no longer swim and slowly dies. Sharks are at the top of the food chain in the ocean’s ecosystem (生态系统). If their numbers drop too low, it will bring danger to all ocean life. Many believe that sharks can never be endangered because they are the strongest in their food chain. But in fact, around 70 million sharks are caught and traded in this industry every year. The numbers of some kinds of sharks have fallen by over 90 percent in the last 20 to 30 years.
