From National Treasure to The Chinese Poetry Competition and then Everlasting Classics (《经典咏流传》), there are a growing number of TV shows about traditional Chinese culture and they’ve caught much attention. Now a new music show about traditional folk music, Flowers Bloom in Spring, has won praise since it first met the public last March.
This popular show was in the form of a singing competition and finally chose four best singers through its 12 episodes (集). A total of 28 groups of young artists took part in the show, and three well-known musicians played the role of Bole.
An Desheng, the producer of the show, said the artists performed over 140 folk music works. The show gave folk songs many modern elements (元素), making young people love to listen and sing. It also combined (使结合) traditional and classic folk songs with popular songs, allowing people to experience the folk songs in a fresh way.
“Now lots of traditional songs, which were created in the countryside, are nearly disappearing. We can’t admire the folk songs sung by the working people while taking a walk in the busy streets full of high buildings,” said Lei Jia, one of the three musicians, adding that she was touched by what the show had done to help young people develop an interest in folk music.
Flowers will bloom in spring, and folk songs will return to life with a brighter future. The new age has added wings to folk songs, and by singing, we’ll welcome the future together.

Tai chi has always been a symbol of Chinese culture and is becoming popular around the world. According to Xinhua, this ancient martial art is practised by over 100 million people in more than 150 countries. It was recently added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List (非物质文化遗产名录).
One thing that makes tai chi popular is its health benefits. As you move, you breathe deeply and naturally, focusing your attention—just as in some kinds of meditation (冥想)—on your body. This helps you relax and find inner peace.
According to Harvard Health, tai chi is suitable for almost anyone, from healthy people to those recovering from surgery (手术). This is because its movements are never forced—the muscles arc relaxed rather than tensed, and the joints (关节) are never fully bent (弯曲). It is all gain and no pain.
What makes tai chi even more interesting might be the philosophical (哲学) ideas behind it. The term “tai chi” comes from Taoism, which states that inaction, as opposed to action, is the solution to problems. That’s why tai chi movements are slow and soft. It is not used to fight an enemy—it is used to protect yourself. That doesn’t mean it is weak though. The principle of tai chi is to use softness to beat hardness.
Tai chi also focuses on harmony between yin and yang. For example, if you work too hard and feel tired, you have too much “yang”. So it is time for you to calm down and get more “yin”. This idea of keeping a healthy balance can be applied to everything in life. It makes tai chi far more than just another martial art.

The carvings were once commonly found on either side of the main entrance of Minnan’s buildings. However, with development, the number of ancient red brick buildings has decreased, and Minnan’s brick carvings have gradually faded from sight, said Wu Jiandong, a young master brick carver from Fujian’s Quanzhou City.
The 42-year-old has learned the traditional technique and now combines it with modern tastes to develop his own style of brick carving. Wu said that he hoped to be able to help the traditional craft continue through innovation.
“Market demands have changed in recent years, and so has our thinking, “Wu said. “We must add modern elements to help pass down and develop traditional crafts.”
People in Minnan love tea, so Wu created a series of carved brick tea decorations, including tea plates, cup holders, pot holders and other items, They have been warmly received by local people and foreign visitors.
Earlier this year, a pendant (挂件) decorated with a swallow, tail ridge (屋脊) and a bright moon was bought by an overseas Chinese man from the Philippines. The customer told Wu that he would hang the pendant in his office as a reminder of the architecture and the moon of his hometown.
Because of the market’s recognition of his work , Wu will be able to pass down the craft and further develop his pieces, and the popularity of short videos has also given him new hopes of promoting (推广) Minnan brick carvings.

For a Friend

North and south of my cottage winds spring water green;
I see but flocks of gulls coming from day to day.
The footpath strewn with fallen blooms is not swept clean;
My wicket gate is opened but for you today.
Far from market, I can afford but simple dish;
To drink with my neighbor if you wish,
I’ll call him over the fence to finish the cup.

Jun Korea Posted: 3 days ago | Question: First trip to the USA For my new job, I will travel to the United States next month and meet my American boss. This will be my first trip to the USA. I’m worried about correct business behaviour and manners. My boss invited me to his home for dinner. Do you have any advice? |
Sue Miami Posted: 3 days ago | Re: First trip to the USA It's a good idea to bring a small gift or something from your country. Don’t be surprised if your boss opens the gift right away. In the USA, people often open a gift when they receive it. In Korea, that is not polite, but it’s appropriate in the USA. |
Kathryn New York Posted: 12 hours ago | Re: First trip to the USA In some countries, such as Korea, Japan and China, it’s the custom to remove your shoes before entering a house. In the United States, you usually don’t take your shoes off. Once I was travelling in Japan and entered a house with my shoes on by mistake. Whoops! |
Andrew Washington Posted: 2 hours ago | Re: First trip to the USA I was surprised that American men often cook and that both the husband and wife come to dinner table and talk. You probably won’t speak about business during dinner, so my advice is to know some good topics of conversation. For example, you can talk about travel, food, music, or sports. Of course, it’s good to ask about your boss’s family. But it’s not polite to question about age, salary, religion, or politics. |

To remind people of the importance of water, the UN first set up World Water Day in 1993. It is on Mar 22 each year. From Mar 22 to 28 is also the China Water Week. The first year’s theme is “Waste water”. It tried to call people to reuse waste water instead of wasting it.
In Australia people make good use of waste water. Most Australians have a grass lawn around their home instead of washing the car in the street. Many of them wash it on the lawn to keep the grass longer so that it covers the ground and reduce evaporation.
Rainwater may seem useless to you. But you can also reuse it. People in Germany collect rainwater to wash their toilets. Most houses in the country that are built in the last few years have rainwater collection devices(设备). Rainwater is collected from the root, and then linked to the toilet. But if you don’t have the device just put a bucket(桶) under your roof when it rains.
Water makes up 71 percent of Earth’s surface. But we can only use a very small part of it. Only about 3 percent of the world’s water is fresh water. It’s in lakes, rivers and underground.
Over 80 percent of the waste water in the world goes back into the nature. It has not been cleaned and pollutes the rivers and lakes. Unsafe water makes around 842,000 people die each year.
By 2030, about half of the world’s population could be facing water problem. By 2050, as many as seven billion people across the world could not have enough water supplies. The world’s population might be 9.3 billion by then.
