A little job for my Uncle Podger
Everybody in the house had to help when Uncle Podger did a job. When they bought a picture once, Aunt Podger asked, “Now, where shall we put this?”
“Oh, I’ll do it all myself. Don’t worry, ’’ Uncle Podger said. Then he took off his coat to begin.
He sent one of the girls out to buy some nails, and then he sent one of the boys to tell her how big the nails should be. When the nails arrived, he ordered everybody get him the things he need to put the picture onto the wall.
Then he climbed up a chair and lifted the picture up. .. and he dropped it. He tried to catch the glass …and he cut himself. He looked for something to put around his finger, and he could find nothing. So he danced around the house, and shouted at everybody.
Half an hour later, the finger got tied up and they had bought new glass, and everything was ready. Uncle Podger tried again. Everybody stood around him. They were all very nervous and ready to help.
When Uncle Podger was trying to find the place on the wall where he was going to put the picture, he suddenly fell off the chair onto the piano. His head and his body hit the piano at the same time. The music was beautiful, but Uncle Podger’s words were not! Aunt Maria was not pleased. She didn’t want the children to listen to those terrible words. She said next time Uncle Podger was going to put a picture on the wall, she would live with her mother for a week.
Uncle Podger got up and tried again, and at midnight the picture was on the wall. It was not very straight, and everyone was very tired and unhappy. Uncle Podger looked at the picture proudly and said, “You see, it was only a little job!”

In these videos, a young child calls out to his or her mother or father; the parent enters the room smiling, turns around and call out to his or her own parent; the grandparent then enters the room smiling and calls out to his or herparent, the great-grandparent. This kind of family is called “four generation (四世同堂)” in China.
The “four generation” videos have not only touched foreign viewers, but also given them a deeper lookinto Chinese family values.
In most East Asian cultures, it is common for many generations of a single family to live together. This is called a big family. In most Western countries, most families are small families, or families that are made up of just children and their parents.
In Western culture, privacy (隐私) and independence are highly valued. Kids usually move out of the house after they turn eighteen. Many of them borrow money and work part-time jobs in order to pay for college. If they choose to continue living with their parents after growing up, it can be seen as a failure. Although family structures in the East and West may be different, the love between family members is common. That might be why the “four generation” videos have won so many hearts around the world.

We live in a small town in Pennsylvania, US. There are three girls in the Smith family, Amanda, Theresa and me. People often say things to me, like “Oh, the three of you, you’re such nice girls. Your sisters are so pretty and so thin! You’re really nothing like them.” That made me sad.
At school, all of my teachers had taught my sisters. On the first day of school, they said “Oh, the youngest of the three! I hope you’re just like your sisters. They’re such wonderful students.”
People always compared me with my sisters. So I couldn’t help comparing myself with them, too. Theresa was smarter, Amanda was prettier. I began to work hard to be more like them. What my sisters did, I did, too. At last, I became drum major(主鼓手) of our school’s marching band. Both Amanda and Theresa had been drum majors. I became editor of the school’s newspaper. Theresa had been the editor two years before.
But last year, Amanda went to college, and Theresa went to high school. Now I’m by myself at junior high. Everyone knows me, because I’ m the drum major and the newspaper’s editor.
Now I don’t feel like a Smith girl any more. I feel like myself. I’m proud of doing all of the same great things that my sisters did. But the best thing I did was to learn to stop comparing myself with them.

They gave many different answers. Some students said it weighed 200 grams, others simply said they didn’t know.
She smiled and replied, “Actually, the weight of the glass doesn’t matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my arm. If I hold it for a day, I’ll have to call an ambulance(救护车). In each case, it’s the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.”
She continued, “That’s the way it is with stress. If we carry our burdens(负担) all the time, sooner or later, as they become increasingly heavy, we won’t be able to carry on.”
“Just like putting down this glass of water, you have to put your stress down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with our burdens---holding them more easily each time.”
As this teacher said, we shouldn’t carry our burdens around all the time. Forget them today and pick them up tomorrow. No matter what burdens you’re carrying now, put them down for a while and get some rest. Your mind will thank you for it.

“Not as good as you think,” I joked. But Dad disagreed with me. “Let’s go next weekend,” Dad said. “This will probably not go off completely as planned,” my little brother Paul said. I laughed and replied, “But it will surely be fun.”
I started to think back. Once Dad decided we should all learn to canoe (划独木舟). We borrowed two canoes from our friends and drove to a lake. Alone in the middlle of the lake,we found that we forgot to take the paddles (桨). Hours later, we all jumped in the lake and pushed the canoes back. It was a fantastic trip.
Another time, Dad decided we should all learn to ski (滑雪). All of us hate the cold so we spent the weekend around the fire in the hotel, drinking hot cocoa and playing board games (棋类游戏). It was great.
When I stopped day dreaming, Mom said, “Sweetheart, we don’t have a tent.” “We don’t need one!” Dad said happily. “We’ll take all the seats out of the car.”
I don’t know what will happen next weekend, but I’m sure we’ll have fun.
