There are a lot of interesting things in the world. If someone tells you that they can fish in the desert, you must think they are joking. But this is true. In some places of Africa, people can fish in the desert. It must be very interesting to get some fish from the sand. And in the woods of Asia there is a kind of bird. To our surprise, this kind of bird doesn’t eat anything but iron. I think the bird’s teeth must be harder than the iron. We all know that snakes can eat mice, but in a place in Africa, a kind of big mouse can eat snakes. Isn’t it interesting? Have you ever heard of “brush trees”? They are different from trees we know. People use branches to brush teeth, and they are good for people’s teeth.

Honeybees do more than just make honey. They fly around and pollinate(授粉) flowers, plants, and trees. Our fruits, nuts, and vegetables depend on these pollinators. One third of our food needs to be pollinated by the honeybee.
Have you seen or heard a honeybee lately? Bees are mysteriously disappearing(消失) in many parts of the world. Most people don’t know about this problem. It is called “colony collapse disorder” (CCD). Some North American beekeepers lost 80% of their hives(蜂巢) from 2006~2008. Bees in Italy and Australia are disappearing too.
The disappearance of the honeybee is a serious problem. Can you imagine never eating another blueberry? Without honeybees food prices will rise quickly. The poorest people always suffer the worst when there is a lack of food.
This problem affects other foods besides fresh produce. Imagine losing your favourite ice cream! Haagen Daaz is a famous ice cream company. Many of their ice creams depend on the hard-working honeybee. In 2008, Haagen Daaz began raising money for CCD. They also funded a garden at the University of California called The Haven. This garden asks people to help the honeybee and teaches visitors how to plant for pollinators.
Donating money to research is the most important thing humans can do to save the honeybee. Scientists need money to study the causes of Colony Collapse Disorder. Some scientists blame CCD on weather change. Others think pesticides(杀虫剂) are killing the bees. Beekeepers transport their hives from place to place in order to pollinate plants year round.
Not everyone has money to donate regularly. There are other ways to help the honeybee. Spread the word by telling your friends and family about the problem. Tell your teacher about the disappearing bees too. Maybe your class can write a letter to the government.

Elephants are helpful in the logging industry. The powerful animals can pull up logs and put them in the right place. They do not make pollution. They do not harm the trees around them either. They can also get to the place which is impossible for the modern machines to reach.
Dogs can be called humans’ closest friends. Dogs offer their help everywhere. They can play with us and make us happy. They can take care of old people and babies. They can search out lost things and help people in trouble. They can make some shows on television or in films. Dogs can also guide the blind people to the place where they want to go.

We all know that people have much more stress (压力) than before. Luckily, a new study has found an easy way to solve the problem. According to the researchers of the study, small green plants on the desk can greatly reduce people’s stress.
60 people from different jobs took part in the study. Half of them worked without any plants, while the other half worked with plants on their desks. Then a standard test was used to find out their stress levels. More than 90% of the office workers showed a lower stress level after taking only a three-minute rest to look at their plants.
The study has also found that it does not matter whether people looked at their plants or only had the plants near their computers. Only if people could see green plants for about a week in their working places, their stress levels changed greatly. This finding worked for everyone no matter how old they were and what their jobs were.
“People used to go out of their houses and enjoy themselves in nature, but now they have less time to do so,” one of the researchers said, “Lucky for them, our study has found out that a small green plant is as useful as a large forest.”

Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save yourself. It is important to know the ways you can use and to show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways(楼梯) and fire escapes, but not elevators(电梯).
From the lower floors of the building, escaping through windows is possible, learn the best way of leaving through windows with the least chance of serious injury(伤害).
The second floor windows are usually not very high from the ground. An average(普通的) person, hanging by the finger-tips will have a drop(下降) of about six feet to the ground. It is about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed, or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may have leaked(渗入) into the room.
On a second or third floor, the best windows for escaping are those which open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely, dropping onto stones might end in injury, bushes(灌木) and grass can help to break a fall(减弱落势).

Four weeks later, Miss Johnson brought the plants back to the table. One plant was standing straight up, and the other one was bent (弯曲的) over.
Miss Johnson asked, “What are the difference?”
“You put one in a dark comer and the other one on the windowsill,” Ellie answered.
“You watered the plant on the windowsill, but you didn’t water the plant in the comer of the room,” Aaron said.
“That’s right. The plant on the windowsill is still growing and healthy. We can know that plants need sun and water to grow and to be healthy. Do you know that plants breathe? They also have very small mouths on their leaves, but we can’t see them with our eyes. Plants breathe in CO2 from the air and use their roots to take in water. Once they have water and CO2, plants need light. Leaves can turn the CO2, water and light into sugar and oxygen. The sugar is food for the plants. The plants release the oxygen into the air, which humans and many animals breathe in.”

It lived happily until people arrived. Sailors (水手) from Europe found those birds in the 16th century on Mauritius Island (毛里求斯岛) in the Indian Ocean.
When the sailors found the strange birds that could not fly, they were surprised. The people from Europe on Mauritius Island ate the birds and cut down the trees. The animals they brought with them ate the eggs and the young. So no living dodos were found on the island in the following years. Unfortunately, they died out at last. Later, the samples (标本) of some dodos were brought to England in the 17th century for the future study.
It’s said that people killed all the dodos. This was how the words “as dead as a dodo” came. It teaches us a big lesson.
