The new and publicly-available ChatGPT is a type of AI that has been “trained” by looking at over 8 million web pages. When asked a question, ChatGPT uses this training to produce detailed answers that often seem like they were written by a human. You can ask it anything and it will give you answers to not only follow-up questions but also professional questions (although it does sometimes make mistakes). You can also ask it to write text, such as short stories or essays. The technology is so promising (有前途的) that some people believe it will overtake (超过) Google in the near future.

For many years it has been expected that AI will become an important part of our lives, and for just as long there have been concerns (忧虑) of the trouble that AI could cause. In the 20th century, scientists, philosophers and writers sometimes worried that AI would become too powerful. In the short story I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, a giant supercomputer has killed every human on earth except five people it keeps to torture (折磨). And in the 1984 film The Terminator, a powerful AI called Skynet uses time travel to send a robot into the past to try and kill the mother of a brave and strong fighter. On the other hand, some people were optimistic of advanced technologies’ potential (潜力) to build a better world. In the 1960s TV show Lost in Space, a family of humans were helped by a friendly robot named Robby.

Nowadays, there is less concern of an all-powerful AI trying to destroy the world, and we are not expecting friendly robots just yet. That doesn’t mean there is not a lot of excitement and concern being felt towards new technologies like AI, though. ChatGPT is a great example of a modern technology that is causing mixed feelings.

It’s too soon to say what kind of influence ChatGPT will have on our lives. Let’s hope that, if ChatGPT does become bigger and more popular, its effects are mostly positive. So, what do you think? Will ChatGPT be good, bad, or somewhere in between for humankind?

1. Why can ChatGPT produce detailed answers like they are from a human?
A.Scientists teach ChatGPT to talk like a human.B.ChatGPT has looked at over 8 million web pages.
C.ChatGPT depends on Google’s basic information.D.Many people answer the question on the Internet.
2. Which has a positive attitude towards AI?
A.Lost in SpaceB.The Terminator
C.SkynetD.I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream
3. What opinion does the writer agree with?
A.People are always crazy about new technologies.B.People become more worried about Al at present.
C.ChatGPT is a perfect Al technology with no doubt.D.ChatGPT brings people a mixture of joy and worries.

【推荐1】Nowadays more and more children seem to get lost in a “sea of digital technology”. As they use digital technology too much, they are losing their ability to do the simple things. They can’t make toys themselves with hands or help mum cook dinner. And worst of all, they seem to be losing interests in communicating with others.

“I have talked with a number of teachers. They care about increasing numbers of young pupils who can play with computers or smart phones, but few or no skills to play with making things,” said a teacher, Colin Kinney. “Many pupils can’t communicate with other pupils but their parents talk proudly of their ability to use a computer or smart phone.”

Instead of playing with other children, more and more children are choosing to stay indoors and quietly play on a tablet on weekends and after school. How can a child grow up to be a very good artist if he doesn’t learn how to use a paintbrush and develop his painting skills? How can a child learn to making friends as he gets older if he doesn’t learn to communicate with others at a young age?

Digital technology can be used for good or bad. We can use stone to either break a window or build a house. We shouldn’t blame the children. We should help them make right choices. It is certainly necessary for children to know how to use digital technology in today’s world, but what is more important, we should encourage them to develop social abilities, which will do them good when they grow up.

Release the pain in Spain

Feeling stressed? Then cry out! In the heart of Madrid, Spain, there is a crying room. It has pink signs saying, “Enter and cry.” and “I too have anxiety (焦虑).” On one side of the room, there are phones with a list of names, including mental (心理的) health workers. Visitors can call to talk to them when they are feeling down. In Spain one in 10 teenagers has mental health problems. The crying room could be a way to help them out.

Coleby comforts kids at school

Recently, we got a new member of our school—Coleby, a therapy dog (治疗犬). Coleby is a friendly black dog with curly hair. He helps students emotionally (情感上) and is a great stress helper!

Coleby comes to school to “work” every day. Students see him in the hallways and are welcome to pet him. Usually Coleby is at the office. When students feel upset, they usually go there for help. Coleby can play with them, giving them fun, comfort (安慰) and love.

Mental health is very important to students’ success in school and beyond. It’s as important as physical health or school work.
