Finally, the big day arrived. I was going to spend four months in France, learning French. Alice, my sister, was going as well. We arrived at the airport, feeling nervous and excited.
The flight went by quickly because I was so busy talking with Alice about our trip and how different French life might be from life back home. We decided that we shouldn’t spend too much time together in France. We knew we wouldn’t learn much French if we did that. Even though we agreed, I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to say much the whole time I was in France. However, when my host family(接待家庭) met me, I knew from the mother’s warm smile that everything would be OK.
It was still a bit stressful at first to try to understand and communicate, but after a couple of weeks it became easier. I spent a lot of time with a lovely girl who was a friend of the family, and we got on very well. In fact, I learned lots of interesting words from her, you know, the kind of things you don’t find in books! I had one shameful moment. I used the wrong word when I was talking to a waiter, but he was relaxed about it and told me not to be afraid of making mistakes.
When the time came to say goodbye to my host family, I was very sad to leave. However, I have brought back some wonderful memories from this experience. The most important thing I’ve learned is that if you’re open-minded and positive(积极的) about learning a language, then it’s much easier. I’ve come back much more confident in my ability. I’ve even started watching a television show in French and I’m surprised to find that I can understand a lot more than before my stay in France.

【推荐2】Decide to Do Well
Everybody makes decisions in daily life. They can be as important as what you will do in the future or as simple as what you will eat for breakfast. Any decision could be the turning point of your life.
I made an important decision when I was in Grade 9.
Before I made that decision I was one of the boys who tried too hard to act as an adult. I didn’t know that only kids want to show themselves as adults.
I didn’t listen to my parents and teachers, and my grades became poor. Then came the high school entrance exam.
At the turning point of my life, my mom wanted to have conversation with me. I wanted to turn it down but when I looked at her eyes. I felt I couldn’t refuse. Instead of asking me to study hard, to my surprise, Mom just asked what I wanted to do in the future. Without thinking too much, I just said I would like to study hard.
Mom smiled and asked again: “I asked: what do you want to do?”
I never seriously thought about the question. So I kept silent.
“Whether you want to go on studying or enter society,” she went on, “it is your own decision. Your life ought to be decided by you, not by anyone else, including me.” After saying that, she had tears in her eyes.
For the first time in my life I was asked to make my own decision. I sat in my chair and thought about myself, my life and what kind of person I wanted to become.
It took me what seemed to be ages to make the biggest decision so far in my life-I wanted to be a man who makes a difference to the world. To achieve that, I needed to study hard.
The path to my future became clear to me. I didn’t act rebelliously(叛逆地) any more. With passion(激情) in my heart, I studied hard.
Now, I’m 17. I’m in one of the best schools in my city, and in one of the best classes at the school and I am one of the best students in the class.
Thanks to that decision. I have become what I am today.

I go wherever disasters strike: Indonesia after the tsunami, Pakistan after the earthquake. I was just in Kenya. After their presidential election, at least a thousand people were killed and hundreds of thousands were forced out. We set up mobile clinics in an area with 19,000 refugees (难民). Measles broke out, one of the biggest killers of kids in refugee camps, and it spread like wildfire. Water and medical equipment were also problems.
When my wife passed away, I thought my life was done. But really, it was just getting started. At the end of her life, my wife fell into a coma (昏迷). I held her head in my hands and told her of all the places we would visit, the exciting adventures we would have. I think about this moment many times during my “adventures”. I did not know then how prophetic (先知的) those words would be. She is with me still.

First of all, I have learned that living on my own requires that I become more responsible. My parents usually tell me to finish my work and duties almost every day. When I fail to do the work, I only get scolded (责骂). However now that I am on my own, I get to deal with my duties without being told to.
Another different experience for me while living on my own is that now I have become more decisive. I have to be more careful since I am on my own because my parents are not here to give me their advice.
In conclusion, these are the things that usually happen when I am with my parents and when I am alone. We should learn how to live on their own. But at the same time learn how to follow every skill that was given to us by our parents. We can make use of our freedom of choice to lead to wherever we want.

C.It took me only three weeks away from home when I started to feel homesick. |
D.I think that it is good for everyone to love their parents and themselves. |
E.What’s more, I became more creative just by living on my own. |

One evening this May, on my way home my old car broke down (出故障). It was 25 miles from my home. I wanted to get a ride (搭便车), but there was no car. It was also hard to take a taxi. I decided to take a bus home. I went to a bus stop nearby.
After a while, a bus came, but it did not go to my town. The bus driver was a young woman. She was kind and she told me which bus I should take. I waited there for about thirty minutes, but no bus came. At last a car came to me and a woman came out of the car. She was just the bus driver.
“When I reached the bus station, I got to that the bus to your town couldn’t come, so I returned here. I just can’t leave you here,” she said, “Get in my car and I will take you back to your home.”
“It is a long way.” I said.
“Come on, sir,” she said, “Let’s go.”
On the way she told me a story. A few days ago, there wasn’t gas (汽油) in her car. An old man drove her up to a gas station and then back to her car.
When we got to my home, I wanted to give her some money to thank her, but she didn’t accept her.” I only want to help others and do something nice for somebody. Pass it along.” She said.
