Nina is reading a book which described 37 endangered natural and cultural treasures in the world. The writers want the book to be a hopeful call to action. Let’s visit some of these places.
Venice
The ancient city of Venice, Italy has long been threatened (威胁) by rising sea levels because of the warm temperature. The situation is made worse by the fact that its ancient buildings, built on a body of water, are slowly sinking (下沉). When the city was founded about 1,600 years ago, the level of Adriatic Sea was almost 2 meters lower than it is today.
Mount Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro in northeastern Tanzania, is the highest in Africa, almost 6,000 metres. The mountain supports 5 plant areas and many kinds of animals. The ice glaciers (冰川) on the mountain are disappearing very quickly. This will have a bad effect on the mountain’s ecosystems (生态系统) and on Tanzania’s travel industry. Also, a valuable record of thousands of years of weather history will also be lost if the ice melts.
Glacier National Park
In the United State, the icy blocks in Clacier National Park may soon completely disappear because of weather change. In 1850, there were about 150 glaciers. There are 26 glaciers remaining today. Scientists estimate that the glaciers will be gone by 2030. Warm temperatures are also threatening the many kinds of plants and animals that live in this mountain ecosystem.
Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is the largest coral reef (珊瑚礁) system in the world. Rising sea temperatures are greatly harming the reef. In some areas, healthy yellow, brown and green reefs have become white. The coral whitens when it is in warmer temperature. Sick or dying coral influences the whole ecosystem of this special underwater area. Water pollution and visits by careless swimmers and divers also threaten the reef.

A yearbook is a type of a book published every day.
In 1806, the first formal yearbook was published by Yale University in the USA.
Most yearbooks have a similar format(格式), which has individual(有个性的) photographs of students and information on sports and other activities.
In the US, yearbooks often cover the whole school and not just the senior class. Senior photographs are usually larger than those of underclassmen and sometimes with text about their accomplishments at high school and their future plans.
In the UK and other countries, yearbooks often only cover the final year group and not the whole school. Each student has more space for answers for students to answer, such as “Favourite teachers?” or “Where will you be in 5 years?”

Starting on May 1, Beijing joined many Chinese cities by introducing a new rubbish sorting policy. At the end of the 1970s, over 1.3 million elephants walked around Africa, but today, their numbers have fallen to around 450,000. This is mainly caused by illegal(非法的) hunting for ivory. Need for ivory in markets, especially in Asia and Africa, continues to push the illegal trade. This has resulted in the deaths of at least 20,000 African elephants each year.
Ivory, also known as “white gold”, has long been considered valuable. Its unusual look has led to its use in lots of expensive things, including jewellery, musical instruments and art. And the ivory material itself can stand the test of time. So many people are willing to pay a high price for ivory products.
However, no matter how much real ivory is sold for, it’s certainly not worth the harm to elephants. That’s why some scientists are working to achieve the same beauty of ivory without killing any animals.
Thaddaa Rath and her team at the University of Vienna have created the ivory called “Digory”. The high-tech ivory is made from synthetic resin(合成树脂) and calcium phosphate particles(磷酸钙颗粒). It’s first formed into the shape by a 3D printer. And then it is color-matched and colored. Next, it is polished(抛光) to make it look like real natural ivory.
Although Digory looks so real that it is hard to tell it from real ivory, its chemical structure is completely different from that of the real one. Fritz Vollrath, a biologist who is against killing elephants for ivory, felt excited about the invention and spoke highly of it for the fact that Digory could save many elephants from risks. Scientists have made some achievements, but we still need to do more research to make sure that it is widely used. It’s still hopeful that scientists can be able to protect African elephants by making high-tech materials to take the place of the real ivory.

First of all, we should think about what exactly causes us to feel tired or stressed. According to the Mayo Clinic, a lack of exercise is the main reason for the feeling tired. With this in mind, finding the time to do light exercise during the day could make a huge difference to our mood (心情).
Light exercise includes really simple things like walking, cycling, or even doing housework. This means that if you normally take the bus or subway to school, you could try walking instead. Or when you get home from school, spend 30 minutes or so cleaning up or helping your parents to make dinner.
Being more active is a great way to relax. But yet another way to feel better about yourself could be to take up a hobby. “In fact, hobbies are just as important to good health as exercise is, thanks to their abilities to reduce stress,” according to the health magazine Shape. And having a hobby is one of the best ways people can show passion (热情) and leadership.
A hobby could be anything. It doesn’t matter what it is, as long as it takes your mind off your daily worries. A new hobby could not only relax you, but it could also help you develop new skills. So, the next time you feel stressed, don’t forget to slow down and relax. Something as small as taking a quick run in the park could make a huge difference to your day.
