Animals, including insects, do not have a language like ours. They do not talk to each other in words or sentences. But if we watch them, we can see that they do have ways to communicate.

Can you see the rabbit’s tail which is moving up and down? When rabbits see this white tail moving up and down, they are warning each other to run: They know that there is danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. Many other animals use this kind of language. When a cobra(眼镜蛇) is angry, it raises its sound. It has given them a signal and makes itself look fierce. This warns other animals. When a bee has found some food, it goes back to its home. It cannot tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little dance in the air. This tells the bees where the food is. Some animals say things by making a sound. A dog barks, for example when a stranger comes near. A cat purrs when pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning.

Sometimes we human beings speak in the same way. For example, we make sounds like “Oh” or “Ah!” when we are frightened or pleased or when we drop something on our toes. But we have something that no animals have—a large number of words which have the meanings, information in words and sentences, which no other animals can do. No other animals have so wonderful a language as we have.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,介绍一些关于狗的知识。

【推荐1】The next time your dog chews up your homework or favorite T-shirt, don’t spend your time advising him or her because dogs don’t have the feeling of being shy according to scientists.

Dr. Bonnie Beaver has found this surprising fact. She does tell owners to let it go instead of punishing it, when their dogs do something wrong. As for that sorry look? It is something your dog uses to stop your angry shout. Whenever it starts, he or she sits down with a sorry look.

In 2009, Alexandra Horowitz, a teacher in a college, made a study on 14 dogs. She videotaped each of them several times to see what they did after they were ordered not to eat the food in front of them and left alone in the room. Only five of them agreed, while others ate up the food as soon as the owner left.

Yet all of them had the same look of shame when they were scolded by their owners. In her report named Inside of a dog, she said that while dogs may feel some sorry, the “look” that we humans associate with(与……联系) shames, is not when they are feeling it. They are just smart enough to know that it helps to make their owners feel good. They just do it to stop their owners from getting angry.
