George Daniels lived in London. He was a watchmaker. His work continued the tradition of the English watchmakers of the 18th and 19th centuries. Today this tradition is almost dead. Daniels was the only man in the world who designed his own watches, made all the parts himself and then put them together.
A Daniels watch was the product of his hands alone. One of his watches which is now in an American museum took 3500 hours to complete. He usually made one watch a year. Each one was inscribed (刻) with “Daniels London”and cost about $10, 000. Of course these were not ordinary watches—they were very beautiful and would last three centuries.
George Daniels had always been attracted by clocks and watches. When he was five he used to take his father’s clock apart and put it back together again. At school he used to repair his teachers’ watches.
He was internationally famous and many people would like him to make watches for them. But most of them were disappointed. Then we put everything into the car and we drive to the woods (树林). We look for a place for camper (野营者) and we look for a good place for our tent. The place should have a lot of moving air. We can swim in the lake, walk in the woods, climb a mountain, row a boat, or go fishing.
In the evening we come back to the tent, and we make a fire because it can keep the insects away. We sit around the fire and talk. We may tell interesting stories or we may sing songs.
At night we lie down on the grass. We can look up at the stars. It is a busy day, so we try to go to sleep early.

The idea of a smart city was brought up by US company IBM in 2010. Generally, a smart city is a city that uses digital technologies such as the Internet to improve city planning, save money and resources, and make our life convenient. How smart can a city be? Here are great examples that we can learn from.
In 2009, Dubuque became the first smart city in the US. The city used smart water meters to take the place of traditional water meters. They can detect (探测) water waste and leakage (泄漏) and send data to let the house owner know. The same system is used for other city resources like electricity and natural gas. This way, people know how they use their resources and are glad to help reduce waste.
Santander in Spain also gives us a look in the future. If people point a phone toward a nearby bus stop, the phone immediately shows all bus lines that serve the stop as well as their arrival times. Watson hid 100 copies of a book called Mom&Me&Mom (2013) on London’s subway. The book is from US writer Maya Angelou. It tells about the writer’s relationship with her mother. Watson wrote of the book. “This book is one I have read before and is one of my favorites. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts!” These books were put in different places on the subway. People saw Watson doing the same thing on the New York Subway this month.
With each book, there is a handwritten note by Watson. She asked people to “take special care of the books” if they found them. She also wrote that “when you are finished, please leave it on the subway again for someone else to find”.
Watson’s work is part of a movement called Books on the Underground. It calls on people to leave their books on the subway, so other people can enjoy them too.
Hollie Belton, a woman in London, started the movement in 2012. She loves reading on the subway. She noticed that a lot of people shared her habit, so she got the idea. Over the years, Belton has left over 2,000 books of her own. The movement has attracted more and more people.

Chen started getting into this sport in 2016. “I remember one day I went to a sports store, and by chance, I saw a skate board. I decided to give it a try,” Chen said to China Youth Daily. Although it was really challenging (挑战) to stay on the board at first, Chen found it very interesting. “Every time I did some difficult moves, I felt the joy of making progress,” said Chen. While getting ready for the match this year, Chen even disagreed with his father over his study plan. He wanted to train for more hours at night to avoid influencing with daytime classes.

You may think gymnastics(体操)is only for athletes who are in their teens and twenties. But there is one sportswoman who has broken the unwritten rules of the sport. She is Oksana Chusovitina. At the Tokyo 2020 Games this past summer, the 46-year-old made her eighth, and final, Olympic appearance.
Chusovitina was born in Uzbekistan in 1975. At the age of 17, she attended her first Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. She won a gold medal in the team event as a member of the Unified Team. But this was just the beginning of her long story.
Her trophy cabinet (奖杯陈列柜) now holds no less than two Olympic medals, 11 World Championship medals, two World Cup medals, eight Asian Games medals, four Asian Championship medals and four European Championship medals.
However, not all of those medals were won when Chusovitina was the socially-accepted age a gymnast should be. In 1999, she gave birth to her first son, Alisher. In fact, the Sydney 2000 Games were meant to be the last one for her. At the age of 25, she was at the perfect age for retirement and had already made history by competing in Sydney after having given birth.
But this was not to be the end of Chusovitina’s story. In 2002, Alisher was diagnosed (诊断) with leukemia (白血病). In order to give Alisher the best possible treatment, the family moved to Germany in 2003. But the medical care was expensive, so Chusovitina returned to international competitions in order to raise money for her son.
Her comeback was successful; so was her son’s treatment. In 2008, Alisher got rid of the disease and just months later, Chusovitina won her first individual Olympic medal in Beijing. She was so happy in Germany that she began to compete under their flag-both in Beijing and then at the London 2012 Games.
After finishing a disappointing fifth in London, Chusovitina once again ________, but gymnastics was in her blood. “At night, I told everyone I had decided to retire. The next morning, I woke up and changed my mind,” she recalled.
While competing for Uzbekistan on vault (跳马项目) at the Tokyo2020 Games, Chusovitina failed to reach the event final. Later, she told reporters that it would be her last Olympic Games.
