Often parents know what their children want. Cath, a mother of three children, told us, "My children have packed lunches because they say they don't like to have school dinners. So I make three packed lunches every morning."
However, another mother, Susan, made a different choice. She said, "My daughters have always had school dinners. I think they probably get healthier food at school than a few sandwiches I make for them."
But how healthy are school dinners? Kaz, a father, thought poorly of them. He said, "Fizzy (起泡的) drinks were offered and I think there were a lot of chips."
Jamie Oliver spent a year working in a school kitchen. He was worried about the unhealthy food which included hamburgers, pizzas and chips. So he tried to cook healthy food such as vegetable soups and curries (咖喱) for the children instead.
So Jamie improved the school dinners, and trained the dinner ladies to cook healthy food in that school. Then he advised the government to improve school food across the country. And it seems that the changes have begun.
Anna, a pupil, told us, "We used to have a fast food window where we got chips and coke, but they stopped that this year. There's a salad restaurant, which is good, so it's healthier than it was."

Donnie was my youngest third-grader. His fear of failure kept him from classroom games that other children played excitedly. He seldom answered questions-he might be wrong. He seldom finished his work because he repeatedly checked with me to be sure he hadn’t made a mistake.
I tried my best to build his self-confidence. But nothing changed until midterm, when Mary Anne, a student teacher, was assigned to our classroom. She was young and pretty, and she loved children. My pupils, Donnie included, admired her. But even warm-hearted, loving Mary was baffled by this little boy.
Then one morning, we were working on math problems. Donnie had copied the problems with pains-taking neatness and filled in answers for the first row. Pleased with his progress, I left the children with Mary. But when I returned, Donnie was in tears. He’d missed the third problem.
Mary looked at me in despair. Suddenly her face brightened. From the desk we shared, she got a container filled with pencils.
“Look, Donnie,” she said, “I’ve got something to show you.” She removed the pencils and placed them on his desk. “See these pencils , Donnie?” she continued. “They belong to Mrs. Lindstrom and me. See how the erasers are worn? That’s because we make mistakes too. But we erase the mistakes and try again. That’s what you must learn to do, too.”
She kissed him and continued. “I’ll leave one of these pencils on your desk so you’ll remember that everybody makes mistakes, even teachers.” Donnie looked up with love in his eyes and a slight of a smile.
The pencil became Donnie’s prized possession. That, together with Mary Anne’s frequent encouragement and praise for even Donnie’s small successes, gradually reminded him that it’s all right to make mistakes — as long as you erase them and try again.
1. Why didn’t Donnie play classroom games as other children?A.Because he was afraid to fail. |

Haili Smith, 16, says she and her sister, Brooke, “have very different tastes in books.” Haili likes horror stories. Brooke, 13, prefers fantasy. What they share is the belief that kids are more likely to read if they are connected with a book’s characters. That’s why, in 2020, they started Books Like Me. The nonprofit group donates (捐赠) culturally different children’s books to schools.
“We didn’t really like reading a few years ago”, Haili told TIME for Kids. “[Then] we started to look for books that had characters we saw ourselves in. It made us want to read more. We thought we could share that with students, because we knew that this wasn’t something that changed us only.”
Haili and Brooke started with an Amazon Wish List of books they liked. They shared the list on social media, asking for donations of these titles. Soon, they began receiving boxes of new books to give away to schools. As word about their organization has spread, requests have come in from schools nationwide. So far, Haili and Brooke have given away more than 16, 000 books.
Anitra Carter teaches fourth grade at a primary school in Florida. She says donations from Books Like Me have gotten her students more interested in reading. “It excites them when seeing a character that may represent (代表;象征) them or look similar to them,” Carter says.
Over the years, Haili and Brooke have been invited to speak with educators about the importance of culturally diverse books. They’ve also taken books directly to students. At a book fair in Florida, “I was at a table showing kids the books and they were picking them out,” Haili recalls. “They all looked so happy when they found a book that really resonated (共鸣) with them.”
That, of course, is the goal. “I hope, and I think,” Haili says, “that all kids should ________ so that they enjoy reading.”

Cindy is not the first child who died on an amusement park ride. 25 years ago, the mother of a 14-year-old girl waited to pick up her daughter outside Worlds of Fun. Laura Barry never saw her daughter Rosie alive again.
“My heart goes out to the Smith family more than they can ever possibly know,” said Barry. She is one of the few people who truly know the hurt that family is feeling.
In 1995, Rosie’s mom said that something went wrong on the Timber Wolf the night Rosie died. Police found no evidence (证据). Two men told the police that they saw Rosie standing before she fell out of the car.
“I couldn’t believe that such a thing could happen still and again,” said Barry. She believes Rosie’s death should have been a wakeup call for amusement park safety.
She finds that not much has changed in the past years. Amusement parks race to build bigger, taller, faster rides. In her opinion, amusement parks just try to bring in visitors and give them the idea that riding is good, safe and fun. She believes that parks should have put safety first.
There is no exact number of amusement park deaths each year. It is quite low according to some websites. But Barry doesn’t accept that. “My daughter was the only person that had ever been killed at Worlds of Fun in all of the years, among all of the thousands and thousands of people that went there. The number doesn’t mean anything, you know, because when your child is the one, that’s one too many,” she said.
