The Maowusu Desert, once one of the four main deserts in China, is becoming a green land. It is between Shanxi and Inner Mongolia and was known as “Devil’s Land (恶魔之地)” in the past. Many years ago, local people experienced a lot of sand-related disasters. There were strong sandstorms. Just to get out of their houses they had to clear thick sand away from front doors.

From 1959, local people decided to fight back the sand. Since then, they have planted trees to slow down the wind, and worked hard to turn the sandy land into farmland. Yin Yuzhen came to live near the Maowusu Desert after she married her husband in 1985. Once she saw a small tree growing in their yard, and then she decided to protect her family through planting trees.

Yin and her husband bought 600 small trees in the spring of 1986 and planted them around their house. Though she had taken very good care of the trees, only 10 of them were still alive in the following year. Instead of feeling sad, Yin was hopeful. She said it meant that trees could live in this environment. After 30 years of hard work by Yin and her family, the sand world around their house has become an endless green place.

Now 80% of the Maowusu Desert has been changed. Today, there are forests, farmlands, cows and sheep and even highways in the desert.

文章大意:本文讲述了作者看见有人翻垃圾桶,寻找可以回收利用的东西,他回想自己上大学时,有时候,会等到超市的工作人员扔掉新鲜水果或其他食物,然后自己拿去吃。

One day in 2009—the year I moved to China—I saw a man digging through the trash cans (垃圾箱) outside my building. What was he doing?

I found out later that he was just looking for things to recycle (回收利用). It reminded me of something that I used to do back in college-dumpster diving.

This means taking food or other things that people have thrown them away, usually by supermarkets or restaurants. For example, almost every product (产品) in a supermarket has a “shelf life (保质期)”. Once it reaches its shelf life, people must throw it away, even it’s still in good condition. So sometimes, we would wait until the supermarket workers would throw away fresh fruit or other food and take it for ourselves.

We did this because college (大学) kids in the US usually don’t have much money. We have to pay for things like tuition (学费), rent (房租) and day-to-day living costs. Our parents give us some help, but when we’re on our own, we have to work part-time jobs or find other ways to get by.

Sometimes I helped the divers myself. I used to work at a pizza place part-time when I was in college. Each night, when the restaurant closed, we would sometimes have leftover (剩余的) pizza. I would take the leftover pizza outside and put it somewhere so that my friends could take it later.

1. What is dumpster diving?
A.The practice of making money from recycling (回收利用).
B.The action of taking useful things from the trash.
C.Take the fresh fruit or other food from the supermarkets.
D.Recycling food that is not fresh.
2. Why do college kids go dumpster diving in the US?
A.Because their parents tell them to do this.B.Because they want to protect Earth.
C.Because it is very popular among students.D.Because it can help them save money.
3. What do we know about the writer?
A.He never went dumpster diving during college.
B.He thinks it’s not a good idea to recycle food.
C.He supports (支持) people who do dumpster diving.
D.He won’t go dumpster diving unless he has to.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了过去和现在使用的能源,并详细说明了绿色能源。

Green Energy for Today and Tomorrow

Did you know that most of the energy we use comes from the sun? For example, the sun helps plants to grow. Plants that grew millions of years ago turned into coal, oil, and natural gas (天然气). We call these fossil fuels (化石燃料).

However, fossil fuels make pollution. This is bad for the Earth. Fossil fuels are also nonrenewable (不可再生的). Some day they will be gone. So, scientists want people to use green energy. Why is green energy important? First, it is clean. It doesn’t hurt the Earth. Next, it is renewable. It won’t run out. Green energy gives us almost 25% of the electricity we use today.

What are the main sources (来源) of green energy?

   1   Water Power

Water power uses moving water in rivers and dams (堤坝). Moving water has energy. Water power makes 16.6% of the electricity we use.

   2   Wind Power

Is wind power new? No, it isn’t. People used wind power many years ago. Wind power makes 4% of the electricity we use.

   3   Solar Power

Solar power comes from sunlight. The sun shines on solar panels (太阳能板), and electricity is made. Solar power is now as cheap as some fossil fuels. It makes 15% of the electricity we use.

   4   Biomass (生物质能)

Biomass is energy that we get from plants around us. For example, deadwood or grass is burned in power stations. This makes electricity. Biomass is green energy because we plant new trees or crops (庄稼) after we use it. Biomass makes 2% of the electricity we use.

   5   New Green Energy

Ocean rises and falls each day. This moving water can make electricity. We call it tide power. There is also heat under the Earth’s surface. Scientists can use this heat for energy, which is called heat power. We may find other sources of green energy in the future.

Some day, green energy could make 100% of the electricity we use. That’s good news for the Earth!

1. Why do scientists suggest using green energy?
A.Because it is as cheap as fossil fuels.
B.Because it is clean and won’t be used up.
C.Because it is the main source of electricity now.
2. Where can we get biomass?
A.From natural gas.B.From new trees.C.From dead plants.
3. How many kinds of green energy are mentioned in the passage
A.4.B.6.C.7.

【推荐3】You have just finished eating an apple while on a camp. There aren’t any rubbish bins around; what do you do with the apple core (核)? If you answered “throw it in the grass” because you thought fruit would not have a bad influence on nature, you are wrong.

According to the scientists, decomposition (分解) of fruit litter takes much longer time than you imagine. Some of these “natural” food can take years to decompose depending on the environment they are in!

When animals start to get their food from people, they may stop looking for their own food in nature. This is very dangerous because animals need different foods to stay healthy. Food waste also draws animals to go to areas where there are a lot of people. And when food is thrown out of a car window, animals may develop the habit of searching roadsides for food, which increases the chances of their being hit by a car.

In fact, apples, bananas and oranges are not from wild forests. If they are eaten by wild animals, they will probably cause the animals to get sick. Seeds (种子) of these fruit or vegetables that end up on the ground could grow into an exotic plant there. It’s not good to the local environment. And then, of course, nobody wants to see somebody else’ s fruit litter, which has already gone bad, while enjoying the beautiful outdoors.

So, no litter is safe litter, not even an apple core.
