Elizabeth Clay decided to drive her old car back to her hometown. But while she was driving home, she got a flat tire. Unfortunately, there was no spare tire in the trunk(后备箱).
A couple were driving down the road and stopped to help Clay. The couple picked her up and drove her to a gas station nearby. But when they arrived, they found that the gas station didn’t have the right kind of tire for her car. So the couple invited Clay to go to their home.
The couple called around to look for a suitable tire, but couldn’t find anyone who had one. They finally decided to let her use their car. They gave her the keys and insisted that she take it, saying that they wouldn’t be using it during the holiday anyway.
Clay was surprised. “But I’m going all the way to South Carolina! I’ll be gone for two weeks,” she told them. “We know,” they said. “We’ll be here when you get back. Here’s our number if you need to get in touch with us.”
Clay watched as the couple put her luggage into the car and sent her on her way. Two weeks later, she returned to find her old car cleaned inside and out with three new tires.
“Thank you so much,” she said. “You didn’t need to do this.” The couple said, “It is our pleasure to help others.” Clay realized that it can feel good to help others. She decided to help others like the couple helped her.

He uses a saying to show his opinion, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
In 2017, he began to volunteer to teach at Xiangyang Primary School in Yunnan. Before he came here, he had taught in Hechi, Guangxi, for four years and in Bijie, Guizhou, for two years.
About five years has passed since he taught in Yunnan. “The longer I stay in the countryside, the deeper I understand the challenge in village education. Village schools need teachers, especially good ones,” Hou said, adding that a good teacher can make a real difference to a student and even a village.
Yang Feifan, a volunteer teacher at a village school in Guangxi, shared the same opinion as Hou. He said, “Once we received a lot of donations (捐赠物) from across the country. But I didn’t want the students to get something without giving, so I came up with an idea to open a supermarket selling these donations.”
“Students can get things by cleaning classrooms, cooking or helping others,” Yang said. “I believe good education can help students learn life skills and become responsible (有责任心的) people.”

Cao clearly remembered that day. One evening in March, while having dinner at the school canteen, he noticed a classmate’s face turning purple as he tried to breathe. “Oh no, something is stuck in his throat!” Cao quickly realized the problem and performed the Heimlich maneuver. Cao learned the Heimlich maneuver during a safety education class at Jiangyan Licai Experimental School. “The teacher showed us the process in detail and we practiced with each other,” said Cao. The school organizes safety education classes every month and encourages students to take online courses on the Ministry of Education’s online safety education platform (教育部学校安全教育平台).
Sun Fu, the vice principal of Suzhou Foreign Language School, said that safety education should have different forms such as competitions, and role-playing activities. “The more forms the activities are, the more interested the students will be,” Sun said.

To be honest, I was worried that the rest of the group might not like to talk with me because they were much older than me. I was also nervous because it was the first time I’d done anything like that. In the end, though, there was no need to worry.
One of our main jobs at the sanctuary was to collect the elephants’ food. Elephants eat huge amounts of grass and banana plants, so collecting this took most of the day. It was really hard work, but it was worth seeing the elephants enjoy their meals. We also helped wash the elephants in the river using big brushes. I found that so much fun, even if I got wetter than the elephants did! The part of the day I most look forward to was the evening. By the light of the moon, we led the elephants on foot into the forest area where they spent the night.
All the volunteers stayed in a small house, so we didn’t have much space. The weather was uncomfortably hot and wet, especially at night. The meals were delicious, which all of us enjoy. After dinner, all the volunteers and workers spent the evenings talking and playing games.
Now that I am back in the UK, I miss my friends there too much. When I look back, I can see how lucky I was to go there. Maybe I’ll go back one day-I certainly will!
