Li Chunlin, a farmer, used to live in a poor village in the north of Shaanxi. In the 1980s, he went to Shenzhen to make a living with his wife.
Years later, they became rich and returned to their hometown. To their surprise, the land around the village was covered with sand. That made them feel sad. After thinking carefully, Li and his wife made up their minds to fight against the sands.
They bought thousands of young trees and planted them around the village. However, only a few survived(存活), because the trees were not regularly watered. But how to get water was a big problem. They dug a well(井)but it became dry soon. Then they asked a drilling team to dig a deep well. Clear water appeared, but their money was used up. They couldn’t afford to buy young trees. Learning what they were doing, their friend was moved and decided to do something for their village too. So he offered the money they needed.
With the money, they bought trees and had them planted. They looked after the trees as if they were their own children. After some time, green leaves came out. When the villagers saw the changes: some started to join Li and his wife in the fight. Then more joined. Years went by. And now larger areas around the village are covered with green trees.

Don’t listen to people who say the young people often think only of themselves. It’s not true at all. More and more people in the USA volunteer to spend their school holidays working for others. And they don’t do it for money. Here are some of their stories.
Alice Hamilton,17
I’m going to help the Forest Centre build new hiking paths in the mountains. It’s going to be terrific—I’ll spend the whole summer living in the tent and breathing the clean mountain air. I’m going to sleep under the stars. It’ll be a nice sport, and I’ll be able to do something good at the same time.

This summer, I’m going to volunteer with Special House Programme. They build good, low-cost houses and sell them to families that are not very rich.
They’ll teach me what to do, so I’ll help people and also have a chance to learn how to build houses.

She showed me some map screenshots on her phone, but I had no clue (线索) how to read them. So, I quickly downloaded a translation app and we used the app to communicate. She spoke into the microphone (麦克风) in her language and it translated her words into English for me to understand. I typed my responses and we were able to communicate!
I soon figured out that she needed to get home, which was a long walk away. She didn’t want to use any transportation but I offered to walk her to a bus stop where she could call her daughter for a ride. As we walked, we laughed and joked, even though we couldn’t understand each other’s language. It was a pretty fun experience!
The elderly lady was very grateful for my help and kept thanking me for my time. I had to keep reminding her that it was no trouble at all and that I was happy to help. It was amazing how just a small act of kindness made such a big difference to her.
Finally, we reached the bus stop and she made her call. We said our goodbyes and she gave me a heartwarming message that made me believe in the goodness of humanity (人性). The world’s population will jump from 6.8 billion to 9 billion by 2050. The need for cars will jump with it. But the oil(石油) won’t keep up with the number of cars on the road. So the price of oil will go up.
Electric cars aren’t perfect just yet. It can take eight hours to charge(充电) a car for only 100 miles of driving. And the distance(路程) that cars can go depends on driving conditions(条件). How far it travels depends on the weather and traffic.
Price is a problem, too. Electric models cost much more than oil-powered cars. The good news is that electric-car technology is getting better. As it does, the prices of this kind of cars are dropping.
To charge the car, the US Department of Energy is paying for at least 10,000 charging stations around the country. Private businesses are also getting ready for it. It will cost about $3 for each charge.
Carmakers are coming up with other ways to make the car cleaner and cheaper. Cars may run on clean diesel(柴油). So who knows what will power the car you may be driving in 10 years? The chances are that it will be something that’s clean and easy.

Now a team of middle school students from the US has solved that problem by designing their Recycling Bin app(应用程序).
This app encourages people to recycle. It provides users with a map of local recycling centers. And it allows them to save places as favorites on it. This app also reminds users to recycle.

It was clear that the boy had already used all the money. The lady in front of me said, “Well, I could pay half of that.” I told the boy that I could pay the other half. We searched our handbags. However, both of us only had ten-dollar bills (纸币). Other customers behind began searching their pockets to find some change. It was amazing and moving that all these strangers seemed to have the same idea. All of us wanted to help the boy. Within minutes the cashier said, “I have too much money.” The cashier didn’t need our ten-dollar bills. Then the lady in front of me said, “Wait! I didn’t get a chance to give anything!”
I smiled at her and said, “You did your share, because it was your idea and you started all this.” The little boy smiled and thanked us. I was left with a good feeling. I saw the love and goodness of others all around me. The woman in front of me smiled and said, “It feels good to give, doesn’t it?” I smiled back and said, “Yes!”

When Mrs. March came home and heard the story, she said to Amy, “How could you do that? Those were stories Jo hoped to get printed in the newspaper.”
Amy realized what a terrible thing she had done and started to cry. Later, she begged Jo to forgive her, but Jo answered, “I’ll never forgive you.”
The next day, Jo went to skate with Laurie. Amy went there, too. Jo turned away when she saw Amy.
“The ice in the middle isn’t safe!” called Laurie, “Stay near the edge.” Jo heard the warning, but Amy didn’t. She skated to the middle of the river. Suddenly, the ice broke. Amy fell through the ice with a loud cry. Jo and Laurie pulled Amy out and quickly took the frightened girl home.
Mother wrapped Amy in a blanket. She soon fell asleep. Jo asked her mother, “Are you sure she will be OK?” “Yes, it’s a good thing you got her home so quickly.”
“Thanks to Laurie, it’s my fault! I lose my temper (脾气) so easily. Why can’t I be more like you?”
“I get angry every day,” said Mrs. March. “But I’ve learned to hide it. I don’t allow all of those angry words to leave my lips. You’ll learn to do the same one day.”
Jo began to cry. This made Amy open her eyes and smile. Her smile hit Jo straight in the heart. They hugged one another. Everything was forgiven and forgotten.
