Franz Kafka met a little girl in the park. The little girl was crying. When Kafka asked why she was crying so badly, the girl said she lost her doll. Kafka told the girl that he knew the doll was fine now. “How can you be so sure?” the little girl asked.
“Why? I have received a letter from the doll just this morning.” said Kafka.
Kafka promised to meet the girl at the same place in the park the next day. That night he wrote a letter in the name of the doll. He read it to the little girl when they met again, “Please do not worry about me. I have gone on a trip to see the world. I will write to you about my adventures.”
Since then, the meetings with Kafka and the letters from her favorite doll continued. The little girl was very happy when she heard from the doll. When the meeting came to an end, Kafka gave her a new doll and a letter. The doll looked different from the original doll. The letter explained, “Do not be surprised at my appearance because my travels and adventures have changed me.”
Many years later, the now-grown girl found a letter which was put into a deep fold in the doll. Kafka had written, “You will finally lose everything you love. However, love will return in a different form in the end.”

It was a cold November morning several years ago. My alarm clock had just gone off, but I was having trouble getting out of bed. My dad died a few weeks ago. I felt weighed down by sadness and depression.
Tough and strong, my dad had worked so hard all of his life to support us. He would sometimes shout at my brothers and me, but I always knew that he loved me. Still, he had been raised (养育) in a traditional way and raised us in that way, too. I couldn’t remember, for example, ever being hugged by him.
After my mom and grandma passed away, my dad moved into grandma’s home. I was so happy to have him close by. I would often visit him and just talk with him about life. But we still seldom touched and never hugged. Finally, his own health began to rapidly fail and within a few months he left us. It was a cold morning when we had his memorial service (追悼会), but I was too cold inside myself to feel it. I couldn’t remember when we’d had our last hug.
I sighed (叹气气) and got out of my bed. I turned on the lights and walked into the hallway. I saw my son Jim walking down the hall to meet me. Suddenly, he opened his arms and gave me a heart-felt hug. And just as he did, I heard my dad’s voice deep inside of me say, “Joey, this hug is from me!” I cried and smiled at the same time. Becky almost said Alfred Temple had done it, but she kept quiet. She thought that Tom would tell the teacher about her tearing (撕) his book, so she didn’t save him. Mr. Dobbins beat him and then Tom went back to his seat.
After an hour Mr. Dobbins unlocked his desk and took out his book. Tom looked over at Becky. She looked like a hunted and helpless rabbit. The next moment the master faced the children. There was a long silence, then he spoke, “Who tore this book?”
There wasn’t a sound. The teacher searched their faces.
“Benjamin Rogers, did you do it?”
Benjamin said no.
“Joseph Harper, did you?”

“Amy Lawrence?”
A shake of the head.

Tom jumped to his feet and shouted, “I did it!”
The children stared in surprise at his foolish act.
And when he stepped forward for his punishment, he saw the surprise, the thanks, and the love that came from Becky’s eyes. This was enough for one hundred beatings. And he didn’t even mind staying for two hours after school, because he knew that Becky was waiting for him outside.
Tom went to bed that night planning some actions on Alfred Temple, for Becky had told him everything. And he fell asleep with Becky’s last words to him in his ear, “Tom, you are so great.”

By Monday, we were to hand in an article on it, and be prepared to live up to our answers. We should match word to what we do.
The whole weekend, I tried to come up with something special and easy to do. I talked to my parents, called my grandmother, and asked my next door neighbor. Everyone had good answers, but I didn’t feel like I could do them.
On Sunday afternoon, I met my four-year-old cousin Andrea. When Andrea was watching TV, I started to write my article. Soon I felt a pair of eyes on me. It was Andrea.
“What are you doing?” she asked.
“I have to write an article about what doing the right thing means to me.” I answered. Andrea laughed.
“That’s easy,” she said.
“OK, tell me the answer,” I said.
“Doing the right thing means being nice to your family and friends. Do what your mum says. Never lie. Take a bath when you’re dirty. Don’t waste water and electricity…”
I looked at Andrea amazingly. Not only had she answered a very difficult question for me, but I could easily follow all of her rules. So when I wrote my article, I included the story about Andrea and how she had answered my question.
