The platform was developed jointly by the Dunhuang Academy and the Chinese tech firm Tencent. It uses gaming technologies to show the historical scenes of the Library Cave in the digital world.
The Library Cave in Mogao Grottoes was discovered in 1900, with more than 60,000 cultural relics dating from the 4th century to the 11th century unearthed. It was one of the most important archaeological discoveries in the 20th century.
On the platform, visitors can role-play and “time travel” to ancient dynasties and talk with eight historical figures. The public can enter the platform through the Digital Dunhuang website and its WeChat mini program.
In the digital age, the model of “culture + technology” has been adopted to promote(促进) the development of Chinese culture. The digitalization rate of China’s precious cultural relics has been more than 70 percent, according to the 2022 China Digital Collection Industry Research Report released by iResearch.
Institutions(机构) such as the Palace Museum have also launched online digital services of their own. Artificial intelligence (AI) technology allows the public to view the interior of the buildings through the Palace Museum’s WeChat mini program.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has also encouraged the development and transformation (转型) of cultural intellectual property by digital means. China Central Television has created a series of digital collections with different Dunhuang themes, such as the Dunhuang divine deer Youyou. It was created based on the image of the nine-colored deer from Dunhuang murals. The public can see the divine deer on CCTV’s own digital platform.
Digital collections cater to(迎合) the consumption habits of young people. They not only protect the intellectual property of the collections but also bring the public closer to China’s “excellent traditional culture”, noted Dunhuang Art Institute.
Su Bomin, director of the Dunhuang Academy, told Xinhua that more efforts will be made to explore new forms for showing cultural relics and offer the public more immersive cultural experiences to develop Dunhuang culture.

Chinese people started to use hand fans over 2000 years ago. The fans came in different shapes such as round and square. They were also made of all kinds of materials. The ancient round fans have different shapes which are made according to their own preferences. Palm leaf (棕桐) fans were cheap and easy to make. Feather fans (羽毛扇) can be used only by the rich. Sandalwood (檀香) fans could send out a sweet smell.
Later, hand fans became far more than just something that could cool you down. They developed into artworks in which tuanshan (round fans) and zheshan (folded fans) were the most common. In the shape of a full moon tuanshan were usually made of silk. They had beautiful birds and flowers on them. Women, especially those in the imperial palace (皇宫) liked to use them.
Meanwhile, men, especially the literati (文人), used zheshan. The literati liked them because zheshan were usually made of paper and they could paint and write poems on them. It was a way for them to show off their ability in literature painting and handwriting. Almost anything can be painted on zheshan.
A small fan can show its unique charm (独特魅力) in the hand and has played an important role in Chinese traditional art for thousands of years. Today Chinese people still use these fans. Fans come in many shapes and materials including plastic cloth and so on. According to different usage we invent electric fans which can be carried around and are more convenient to use.

②Boya was good at playing the guqin. One day, he was playing music on his way home on the boat. To Boya’s surprise, Ziqi, a woodcutter (樵夫) who happened to pass by, could understand exactly what he wanted to express through his music. After a long talk, they became good friends. Before Boya had to return to his state, they agreed to meet again in the following year.
③The following year, Boya took his guqin to the place where they met for the first time. It was an exciting date for him to meet Ziqi. He waited for a long time, but Ziqi didn’t appear. Unfortunately, when visiting Ziqi’s father, Boya heard that his good friend had died from a disease. Boya was so sad and in front of Ziqi’s tomb (墓), he played again the music he had played when they first met. The feeling of the music was so strong that it was as if the rivers and the mountains were crying. When finishing playing, Boya broke his guqin into pieces. From then on, Boya never played again.
④People in the Song Dynasty built the Guqin Tai in Hanyang to the memory of the deep friendship between Boya and Ziqi. It became an important part of the local culture.
⑤Zhiyin culture has new development in the new period. The famous ancient Chinese classical music piece Gaoshan Liushui was performed during the G2.0 Summit (峰会) in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province in 2016. The musical performance not only showed the beauty of traditional Chinese culture, but also expressed China’s willingness to develop its friendship with people from around the world.

A new study shows that moderate background noise is a better motivation to creative thinking than the sound of silence, a well-known magazine reported.
A paper published in the Journal of Consumer Research says that the perfect working environment should buzz (嗡嗡作响) with a little noise.
Researchers found that test subjects were at their most creative state when background noise was measured a 70 decibels, the level one might find in a busy coffee shop.
A nearly silent environment (50 decibels) was too quiet. Turning up the volume to 85 decibels (a jackhammer tearing up the pavement outside your building) had an opposite effect—the noise became a distraction (分散注意力) .
The researchers asked 65 students at the University of British Columbia, Canada, to perform various creative tasks while noises recorded at a roadside restaurant were played in the background.
In one experiment, scientists asked participants to brainstorm ideas for a new type of mattress (气垫). Test subjects had the most successful discussions when the noise in the background was noticeable but not too loud.
While a quiet environment may make it easier to read a book, the authors of the study say that moderate background noise creates just enough of a distraction to force people to think more imaginatively without breaking their focus so completely that they can’t think at all.
Should we all head for Starbucks to get creative? Not necessarily.
Researchers found limited work time surrounded by the low-level noise of a coffeehouse is what really stimulates creativity.
Equally, working in a café environment isn’t good for everybody. The productivity boost (提高) was most obvious among those who were naturally creative to begin with.
1. What’s the main idea of the passage?A.The less noise, the better state of study. |
B.Noise is no bad thing at any time. |
C.Noise in the coffeehouse is enjoyable. |

Contagious (传染性的) behavior
When your friends check their phones, do you do the same? The prize for psychology went to a study on this. Italian researchers found that looking at your phone makes other people around you do the same in less than a minute. This is because humans subconsciously copy the actions of other people. “We have a need to follow the norms, to match our actions with those of other people.” said the researcher Elisabetta. That’s why people often pick up each others’ moods or gestures during a talk.
No big fan of music
Researchers put mosquitoes and a hamster (仓鼠) together in two environments. One had no music and the other had a speaker playing electronic dance music. Mosquitoes waited longer to bite the hamster if they heard the music. They also mated (交配) less with music on. It seems that electric dance music is a buzzkill (扫兴的事物) for those bloodsuckers.
So this study shows if the mosquitoes are biting you, you are likely to turn up the stereo.
