Since early 2020, the use of mask (口罩) has increased greatly. Sadly, lots of used masks ended up in our ocean.
Single-used masks are mainly made of plastic. When they enter the ocean as litter, they will take as long as 450 years to break down. Straps (带子) of masks pose an entanglement (缠绕) risk for wildlife. In addition, masks can easily be mistaken for food and eaten by wildlife.
What can be done to help? Since most masks are made of several materials, it’s difficult to recycle them. Therefore, many people are calling for masks made of a single material. Degradable (可降解的) or reusable masks are also good choices. More importantly, the straps of masks should be cut off to prevent entanglement risks for wildlife.
Government policy is also important. Creating an effective disposal (处理) system is as important as letting the public know the importance of proper disposal of used masks. What’s more, it would be helpful to encourage technological development in producing reusable or degradable masks.
1. How long will it take for a single-used mask to break down in the ocean?2. Why might some animals eat masks?
3. What should we do with mask straps?
4. How many suggestions for the government are mentioned?
5. What does the passage mainly talk about?

Robert Kurtz finds himself working right in the middle of a composting (肥料) revolution (革命). Kurtz is a manager at Rust Belt Riders. The composting company is based in Cleveland, Ohio. Its goal is to fight against climate (气候) change by recycling as much food waste as possible.
“If we want to meet the climate goals, we have to deal with food waste,” Kurtz told Your Hot Job. “It’s a huge part of the problem.”
Wasted food ends up in landfills. As it breaks down, it creates a gas called methane (沼气). Methane traps heat in the air. And that increases climate change.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency says the average family in the U.S. spends $1, 500 per year on food that doesn’t get eaten. Businesses waste food too.
Every day, Kurtz contacts grocery stores, restaurants, and other food-service businesses. He educates them about the harm of food waste. Then he asks if they’re willing to change the way they get rid of their extra food.
So far, Rust Belt Riders has persuaded (劝说) 300 companies and 2,800 households to do something differently with their food waste. The company’s seven trucks and 30 employees pick up the extra food. Then they compost it, turning it into soil.
Compost soil is much more than just dirt. It’s made up of five ingredients to help plants grow better. That’s why Kurtz and his workmates at Rust Belt Riders offer a second service: They sell the composted, rich soil to people and businesses that need it.
1. What is the goal of Rust Belt Riders?2. Why is food waste harmful?
3. How do people in Rust Belt Riders deal with the collected food waste?
4. Why is compost soil much more than just dirt?
5. What do you think of Robert Kurtz’s job?

China also has the same kind of problems. Every year more farming land is used for factories or offices. More housing is needed too. As people become richer, they buy more cars. New roads are needed and new car parks are built in the city centres. This all makes the cities hotter.
It is not easy to change the situation(情形). City planners say that we should plant more trees in the middle of cities. ‘Every new street should have trees on both sides,’ they say. Trees make the temperature(温度) lower, so we should have more trees in our parks and squares. Also we should paint our roofs(屋顶) white. If we do this, they do not become so hot. Every roof in a hot and sunny country should have solar(太阳的)roof panels(板). The electricity from these can be used to run the air conditioners in the building.
People continue(继续) to cut down forests around the cities. This makes the problem worse. Cities are growing faster and faster. By the year 2050, 80% of the world’s population will be living in cities. If we go on like this, there will not be enough farmland to feed everyone in the world.

Scientists are still trying to find out more about noise, but already it is known that a noise of over 85 decibels(分贝) can make some people tried and anxious(焦虑的).
In the past we thought only workers in very noisy places became deaf easily. Today, scientists believe that 10% of all workers in Britain become deaf in their work.
There are also new dangers from noise. Pop music, for example, can reach 120 decibels when it is played loudly five feet away! Only a plane can make such loud noise when it takes off.
There was an experiment in the United States. Some people would be given a lot of money if they stood below a jet when it was taking off over their heads. No one got the money after the jet flew past because all of them died in the noise.
People can’t pay their attention on what they are doing when there is much noise. Workers in noisy offices, for example, do their work more slowly than workers in quiet offices. Another study shows that workers in factories can do dull(枯燥的) jobs better when lively music is played for them.

But all those plastic (塑料) bottles use a lot of oil and pollute the environment. Americans buy more bottled water than any other nation in the world with 29 billion water bottles a year. To make all these bottles, 17 million barrels (桶) of oil will be used up. That’s enough oil to keep million cars going for twelve months.
Most people choose to throw the bottles away after having the bottled drinks. In fact, instead of going out with the trash, plastic bottles can be turned into carpeting or clothing. Remember this: Recycling one plastic bottle can save enough energy to power a 60-watt (瓦特) light bulb (灯泡) for six hours.
Unfortunately, for every six water bottles we use, only one is made recycling. The rest are sent as garbage. Or, even worse, they end up as trash on the land or in rivers, lakes, and oceans. Plastic bottles take many hundreds of years to disintegrate (分解).
So why don’t more people drink water from the kitchen? Some people drink bottled water because they think it is better for them, but that’s not true. The chemicals in the bottles themselves may get into the water which can do harm to people.
So next time when you have drinks or water, please try to use a glass at home or carry water in a steel bottle. And if you want to do something more, try to collect plastic bottles and send them for recycling.
Answer the questions according to the passage.
1. What are plastic bottles made from?
2. How many bottles of water do Americans buy every year?
3. What can recycling a plastic bottle do?
4. How long does it take to disintegrate plastic bottles?
5. Is bottled water better for us?
Robot scientists say that one-year-old human babies have better movement (动作) skills than robots do. Let’s take a look at some tasks that are easy for kids but not easy for them.
Picking things up is not easy for robots. If we drop our pencil on the floor, our brains work hard. First, we must find the pencil and see where it is. We move our hands to it. A robot cannot always move its “hand” to the right place. A robot doesn’t know how far it is. When we touch the pencil, it might roll (滚动) a little bit. Robots cannot easily understand this, either. So, if you drop a pencil on the floor, a robot will probably roll it around the room.
If someone drops you in a new building, you might feel a little lost. But you can look around, find a door and get out quickly. You will not get stuck (困住的) in a corner. But a robot will look everywhere for a door, even on floors. This is because it’s hard for them to understand spaces, such as walls. Scientists need to train them with lots of data to learn this.
“Common sense (常识)” is what we don’t need to think or talk about. Because of it, we do not look for doors on the ceiling. We feel whether it has coffee inside, and whether it is hot. A robot may turn the cup upside down and hold the hot part of the cup. Scientists tried to teach robots common-sense rules. Maybe they just need more time to learn.

Walking around the city, you will see girls wearing hanfu on the underground or people wearing T-shirt with Chinese characters in the streets. A new trend is getting popular in China. It’s guochao or China-Chic. Guochao adds traditional Chinese culture into products, and ①它代表着中国本土文化的兴起. Guochao got people’s attention in 2018. Before that, the market was controlled by foreign companies. There were few Chinese-brands. To win the market share, many Chinese brands followed the footsteps of these Western brands. In 2018, Chinese sportswear brand Li-Ning made changes to the situation. It introduced its Wu Dao collection (悟道系列) to the world. The collection not only looked fashionable, but also included elements of traditional Chinese culture. It quickly caught people’s attention at home and abroad. And it created amazing sales.
Later, many Chinese brands, from food, drinks and clothing to mobile phones and cars, started to add Chinese culture into their products. Even the film and music industries made every effort to create Chinese styles. “We want our products to be the ones that young people would like to share”, they said. These brands got what they wanted. Young people gradually changed their attention from Western culture to guochao. They accepted it with pleasure. What’s more, they started to develop interest in traditional Chinese art and literature. Now they wear traditional clothes, practice Chinese calligraphy and play Chinese musical instruments. Some of them are working together to spread Chinese culture to people around the world.
At the same time, people of different ages start to choose products “made in China”. According to a survey, 68% Chinese people prefer Chinese brands. Among them, 62% say they are open to international brands, but Chinese brands remain the first choice.
