With the World Environment Day coming, our school is now asking every student to form a habit of sorting(分类)the waste. Here in our schoolyard we place four different colors of rubbish bins for different kinds of rubbish. The red is for harm fill waste; the blue is for waste that can be recycled(回收); the green is for kitchen waste; the yellow is for other waste.
The followings are some instructions for you.
Glass: Empty bottles without caps can be recycled to make new glass bottles. Warning: Mirrors and light bulbs(电灯泡)must not be included in the glass waste.
Paper: Newspapers, magazines, boxes must be clean enough to be recycled.
Warning: Paper tissues(餐纸)and wall paper are not recyclable as paper and should be kept separately.

Harmful waste: out-of-date drugs, used batteries, paint and oil…

Fenxiaomeng’s eight hands show that it is good at sorting out different kinds of garbage and everyone should also reach out to help. You can see different colorful pinwheels (风车) in its hands. The colorful pinwheels refer to blue, green and red for using recyclables (可回收物), food waste and harmful waste (有害垃圾).
The mascot was designed by Zhang Zixia, a 12-year-old boy from Beijing. “Now, since Fenxiaomeng has become the mascot, I want to encourage more people to take part in garbage sorting and environmental protection,” said Zhang.
He started a green project called “Fenxiaomeng Is in Action”. Zhang and his schoolmates went to communities to spread waste-sorting knowledge and handed out 2,000 reusable shopping bags with Fenxiaomeng on them. They also collected garbage to help protect the ancient buildings. Zhang also set up “Fenxiaomeng Base” (基地) at every class of his school. Each base includes a recycling bin for collecting used paper and a green diary for recording everyone’s ideas about protecting the environment. There’s also a “green bank” where they store recyclables so they can sell them for money to plant trees in parks in Beijing.
According to Zhang, protecting the environment can be a fun and cute thing, just like Fenxiaomeng. “I hope more people will join me and Fenxiaomeng in the future,” said Zhang.

This is the finding of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 children in London. It showed that the children who had worked hard in childhood had a richer and a happier future. “Children who worked in the home or community got abilities and came to feel they were important members of society, ” said Daniel Brown, the expert who made the discovery. “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”
Brown’s study followed these children in great detail(详情). Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Brown’s research group compared the children’s mental-health(心理健康)scores with their childhood-activity scores. Points were given for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.
Working at any age is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility(责任), independence, confidence and competence—the basics of emotional(情绪的)health. They also help him understand that people must work together and work toward common goals. The most competent(有能力的)adults are those who know how to do this.
Yet work isn’t everything. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live wonderfully in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work.”

Many parents don’t spend time teaching their children about money, and as a result, many of those don’t know how to do with money when they grow up. When should parents begin teaching their children about money?
Experts agree that it’s never too early to learn about money. The more children learn about money, the wiser they will do with money as they grow older. To begin with, parents can teach kids how to count money. Next, parents can teach kids how to save money. For example, a kid wants a new bicycle. Parents can teach them to save part of their pocket money for that bike, while still keep some money for ice-cream and movies. In this way they will begin to understand the meaning of saving.
It’s never too early to teach children different ways to make money besides snatching(抢) red envelops. For example, they can wash cars, clean floors, water the flowers and so on. Sit down with children and talk with them about some ways to make money. You’ll be surprised and glad at the effort they will begin making.
