The development of science and technology makes a difference to people’s life. The creation of special robots has helped farmers a lot.

The population on the earth grows larger each year. As a result, more and more food needs to be grown in order to feed everyone. Because climate (气候) changes all the time, it’s becoming even more difficult to grow more food. When farmers tried to grow more food in the past, some farming methods were used. However, those farming methods weren’t always healthy for the environment. In fact, they were harmful to the environment sometimes.

Could this problem be solved? Some scientists spent several years talking to farmers. They wanted to see what problems farmers were having and how these problems could be solved. This led to the creation of special robots. These special robots move around on farms and collect information about crops (庄稼). They can take pictures of plants and track (追踪) each plant’s growth.

By collecting information about plants, the robots can help farmers predict the growth of the plants. That means farmers can know how their plants will grow. By studying each plant, the robots can also help farmers look after plants better. For example, if the robots find out which plants get sick, farmers can quickly throw them away before they are about to influence other plants beside them. With the help of these robots, farmers can take better care of the plants in need.

【推荐1】Hundreds of little robots are walking around colleges and cities in the United States, Britain and elsewhere. The robots, about 50 centimeters(厘米)tall, are bringing food like pizza to students.

Starship Technology Company has made more than 1,000 robots, but in 2019 they only made 250. Hundreds more will be sent out soon. “The demand(需求)for robots is increasing fast,” said Alastair Westgarth. He is the head of the company and their robots are delivering food at 20 U.S. colleges and 25 more schools will use robots soon.

The robots use cameras, sensors(传感器)and GPS to move around and even cross streets on their own at the speed of 8 kilometers per hour. Computer scientists keep watch on the robots when they deliver food. When a robot arrives, people enter(输入)a code(密码)from their phones to open the robot and get their food.

There are some limitations(局限性)for robots now. The robots have to be recharged regularly(经常充电). They are slow and cannot travel far. They will not leave food at the door.

Ji Hye Kim is the chef of Miss Kim restaurant. She used robot delivery when her dining room was closed last year. Kim prefers robots. She says delivery companies cost more and sometimes they cancel(取消)orders if they do not have enough drivers. Delivery companies also group several orders per trip, so food sometimes arrives cold. Robots take just one order at a time. Kim said the robots also excited people who often shared videos of their interactions(互动)with robots.

Denis’ company is testing a new type of robots. The robots are about 1.8 meters tall and can travel at a top speed of 40 kilometers on streets, not sidewalks. He says as the technology gets more popular, the costs will go down.

1. What do the robots do in the colleges in the United States? ________
A.They bring food to students in colleges.
B.They send emails to students in colleges.
C.They deliver newspapers to students.
D.They take photos for students.
2. Paragraph 3 is mainly about ________.
A.when people make the delivery robotsB.what kind of food robots deliver to people
C.how robots deliver food to peopleD.why people keep watch on the robots
3. Why does Kim prefer robots to delivery companies? ________
A.Because robots can help heat the food for customers.
B.Because robots can take one order per trip and never cancel orders.
C.Because delivery companies raise the price when they group the orders.
D.Because delivery companies only share videos with important customers.

【推荐2】The International Space Station (ISS) became humans’ first “home” in space in 2000. It welcomed its first worker that year, paving (铺设) the way for 20 years of future research.

“We should know that we’re all citizens (公民) of not a country, but of the planet,” NASA astronaut Scott Kelly said while talking about working in the ISS.

Over the past 20 years, the ISS has mainly been used as a science lab, hosting 241 people from 19 countries, according to NASA. They’ve gone on space walks, done research on how space affects the human body, and even grown different plants in space.

The station’s development has also been good for people on Earth. For example, the station’s water purification technology has been used in poor areas to provide clean drinking water. The station also plays a role in warning us of natural disasters (灾害).

However, after working for over 7,000 days, the station is starting to get old. It has leaked (泄露) air a few times. Scientists think that the station can keep working until 2024. After that, they’ll bring it down to Earth. It’s believed that Earth’s atmosphere (大气层) will burn up most of the station. The rest of it will fall into the Pacific Ocean.

In the future, space will be home to more stations like the ISS. NASA is building a space station that is smaller than the ISS near the moon. Also, China’s space station will be put into use in 2022.

1. Which of the following things have the astronauts from the ISS never done?
A.Going on spacewalks.B.Stopping natural disasters
C.Growing different plants.D.Doing research.
2. What does the underlined word “purification” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Mixing dirty things into something.B.Making something wet.
C.Removing (移除) dirty things from something.D.Making something dry.
3. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.More new space stations will be built.B.Building a space station takes a long time.
C.It will be easier to go to space in the future.D.China will send some astronauts to the ISS.
4. What would be the best title for this passage?
A.Humans’ home in space.B.Humans’ home on Earth.
C.The future of the ISS.D.The future of NASA.

文章大意:本文以老人不能使用智能机扫描二维码为引子,以老年人为主角,开展了对智能手机、新科技使用的探讨。

【推荐3】Several months ago, an old man in Dalian failed to travel by underground. At the station, he was asked to show his health QR code (健康二维码) on the smartphone, “What is QR code?” the old man asked. “I have money to buy a ticket. Why do I need a smartphone?” In the end, he had to leave the station.

Over 10 years ago, people still had to leave their house to buy a train ticket or pay their bills. Now all these can be done with a smartphone, and in some cases, only with a smartphone. On the one hand, the fast development of science and technology is making our life easier. But on the other hand, it is creating problems for old people.

Many old people have devoted (奉献) their whole life to working for the society, but now it seems the society has left them behind. What can be done to make a difference. Some volunteers are trying to help. They teach the elderly to use smartphones. However, it only helps to solve part of the problem.

Many old people have physical problems, poor eyesight makes reading on small screens difficult. And their less sensitive (灵敏的) fingers make it hard for them to use touch screens. Perhaps these are problems that smartphone makers should try to deal with.

Moreover, if you have grandparents or know some elderly people, lend a helping hand to them when they need it. And remember to be patient. Technologies that you think are easy to learn may be a huge problem for them.
