根据短文内容回答下列问题。

Many people spend large part of time indoors—as much as 80-90% of their lives. We work, study, eat, drink and sleep in enclosed (封闭的) environment where there isn’t much fresh air. For these reasons, some experts feel that more people suffer from the effects of indoor air pollution than outdoor pollution.

There are many reasons to cause serious indoor air pollution, such as smoking, cooking and heating appliances (仪器). Also we can smell vapors (蒸汽) from building materials, paints, furniture, which can cause pollution inside buildings. Some kind of natural dangerous gas from the earth can be found concentrated (集中的) in basements (地下室) in some parts of the United States.

Pollution at home and work is often greater than outdoors. It is estimated (估计) that indoor air pollution levels are 25-62% greater than outside levels and can cause serious health problems.

Both indoor and outdoor pollution need to be controlled and prevented.

The greenhouse effect

The atmosphere around the Earth is necessary for all living things. It is like the glass of a greenhouse, letting sunlight in and (B)keeping heat from getting out. Without it, the Earth would be the same (C)________ the moon—cold and lifeless.

When we burn fuels such as petrol and coal, we produce a gas called carbon dioxide. Too much of this gas causes the atmosphere to keep in too much heat. (D)As a result of the greenhouse effect, the Earth’s temperature is increasing. This causes sea level to rise and in the future may cause cities to disappear.

Cutting down forests

Every year, we destroy nature by cutting down huge areas of forests. This makes the greenhouse effect worse (E)________ trees take in carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. 【推荐2】Why do we need to throw less away? There are two reasons. One is that some resources(资源)are nonrenewable(不可再生的). That means there is only a certain amount of that resource in the world. One example of these resources is oil. When we use up all the oil in the world, there will be no more.

There is a second reason for throwing less away. All of our trash has to be put somewhere. Often, it is put into garbage dumps(垃圾场). Much of that trash will be there for hundreds of years. The dumps ill be filled up with all this trash.

There are three ways to cut down on trash.

One way is to recycle. When you recycle something, it means it is made into another shape and used again. Old newspapers may become paper bags. A glassware can be melted(熔化)and made into a bottle.

Another way to cut down on trash is to reuse things. You can wash and use a bottle again that can hold mustard(芥末酱)or something else.

The third way to cut down on trash is to reduce the amount of trash you make, for example, stopping buying things that you don’t need in the first place. That reduces the amount of the earth’s resources.

【推荐3】Air is important for everyone, we live depending on it. But what if it is polluted? Air pollution is a killer. The World Health Organization says it kills about seven million people around the world each year. Even if polluted air does not kill us, it can make us very sick. It may do more than hurt your body. Breathing dirty air can also influence your brain and your ability to think. It is true whether you believe or not.

A new study shows that air pollution can influence our intelligence (智力) — cause a “huge” reduction in our intelligence. The study was carried out by researchers at Peking University and Yale University. Xi Chen of the Yale School of Public Health led the study.

The study performed for a long period. The researchers studied about 25,000 people from across China. The youngest people in the study were 10 years old, while the oldest was 90. They came from 25 of China’s 34 provinces (省) with different air levels. These Chinese men, women and children were given language and math tests during the study. Then researchers compared the test results with levels of pollution in the air. They found that breathing polluted air can reduce a person’s education level by about one year.

Xi Chen told that there are two main parts in the brain—white matter and gray matter. He said, “Air pollution has a great effect on the white matter, and white matter is more connected with a person’s language skills. So, that’s why language skills are more affected.” He also noted other studies have shown, “However gray matter is connected to our ability to solve math problems.”

Chen suggests government to make serious changes. “We need to support in cleaning up the sky instead of using in short-term avoidance, for example the face masks or air filters (过滤).”
