What should you do if there is an earthquake at school? How can you protect yourself when you are caught in a stampede(奔逃)? Now, accidents happen to primary and middle school students from time to time.
Experts point out that more than 80% of accidents can be avoided by improving students’ self-protection ability through safety education and prevention. So on the last Monday in March, we have a good chance to learn some knowledge about safety.
This day is called the National Safety Education Day for Middle and Primary School Students(全国中小学生安全教育日). The purpose of the day is to give us more knowledge about safety.
Let’s see what students have learned about how to keep themselves safe in different situations.
Advice for a stampede If you fall down a moving crowd, cover your head with both hands, lean to curl up(卷起,弯曲) your legs. —Johnson | Advice for an earthquake *Indoors Drop down, take cover under a desk and hold on. *Outdoors Stay away from buildings, walls and power poles(电线杆). *If you are in a car, stop in a safe place and stay inside the car until the earthquake stops. *If you are in a crowded place, protect your head with your arms or take cover under seats and tables. —Ted |
Advice for a fire When there’s a fire, follow the teachers’ instructions, leave the classroom quickly and use a piece of wet cloth to cover your mouth and nose. —Susan |
Experts also point out staying calm is the first and most important rule when you’re facing accidents. Students need to deal with different accidents with different self-protection tips.
Now many schools have taken actions to teach students how to protect themselves. For example, at some schools earthquake drills(演习) are held once a month. Some schools also encourage students to take first-aid courses at school.
Wang Yuequn, an expert on education law at the Academy of Educational Sciences, said that protecting the safety of students is the common responsibility of schools(意识), master safety knowledge, and improve their self-protection ability. Parents should be responsible to monitor their children and make safety education an important part of family education.

Many people like travelling in mountains now. But what can we do if there is a sudden rain or even a storm? We need to be prepared and keep ourselves safe.
Put on any gear (护具) that you’ve brought
All hikers should carry lightweight rain gear or at least a raincoat in case of rain.
Keep your body moving
Move around as you wait so that your body stays warm. For example, step side to side.
Find a shelter
Look around for a place to get out of the rain, such as a tree, a cave even your tent. If you hear thunder, find an immediate shelter. Staying outside during a thunder storm is dangerous.
Watch for changes in the terrain (地形)
Rain can cause flooding, mud slides, rock slides and slippery trails (湿滑的山道), all of which can be very dangerous.
If you are in a lightning storm, the most dangerous places include open areas, hills, mountains, trees and waterways. Lightning is most likely to hit these areas. If you’re in the woods, try to find a small tree that is surrounded (环绕) by other taller trees. Hide yourself in the lowest place you can find.
Put down your trekking poles (登山杆) or other long things. In a lightning storm, trekking poles and long, pointy things make a great conductor for the lightning and are therefore very dangerous. Protect yourself by laying these items on the ground away from you.

T: Hello, everyone. Earthquakes always happen suddenly, so it is difficult to warn people about them. Usually people have little or no idea about what to do during an earthquake, so today let’s talk about some advice. If you have questions, just put up your hands and stand up.
S1: If we are inside the room, what should we do?
T: You must keep calm. When the land stops shaking, leave the building quickly.
S2: Don’t use the lift when we leave the building.
T: Quite right. And you mustn’t jump out of high buildings. If you can’t go out at that time, you’d better hide under a firm(坚固的) table.
S3: Should we go inside the building to help people in danger?
T: No, never. When you are outside, never go inside again. Just move away from buildings, because parts of a building may fall on you.
S4: You mean we find an open air and stay together.
T: Yes. You must stay away from bridges, trees and other tall things, like streetlights and power lines.
S5: We should protect our heads when running to a safe place.
T: Good idea. In short, follow’ what you’ve learned in school. Be brave. You can be safe.
