Xinhua -Thursday, November 3rd, 2022
On Monday, China launched Mengtian, the last part of its Tiangong Space Station. After a 13-hour trip, Mengtian got together with the space station on Tuesday morning. Mengtian was launched from Hainan Island by a large rocket, a Long March 5B.
Back to 2011, China wasn't allowed (允许) to use the International Space Station, so China worked hard to build its own space station, called Tiangong. Last year, the launching of the three parts of Tiangong began. The first and most important part was launched in April 2021. It has the energy and working centre as well as the living area for the scientists in space. Then, in July 2022, China launched a lab cabin (实验舱) called “Wentian”. This time, the new part, Mengtian is also made as a lab cabin with 8 rooms for experiments (实验).
With Mengtian, scientists can do experiments outside the station by operating a machine arm. They can learn more about space. One of the first things they will do on Mengtian is to test how plants grow in space.
At the moment, there are three scientists on the Tiangong. They’ll return to Earth in December. But they may work with three new scientists who will arrive later. Tiangong is now large enough for six people to live and work.
China’s space station will also work with the European space scientists on some experiments on the Mengtian. China says that one day, foreign scientists will also be able to visit Tiangong.

Three Chinese astronauts Wang Yaping, Zhai Zhigang and Ye Guangfu gave a space lecture on Dec. 9th, 2021
“Hello, everyone! Welcome to Tiangong Class.” With this greeting, a special lecture began on Tiangong space station about 400 kilometers above Earth on Dec. 9th, 2021.
Lasting for about an hour, the space lecture was broadcast live to millions of students. Three astronauts from the Shenzhou XIII crew hosted the lecture, introducing how they live and work on the space station and doing some interesting experiments that can only be done in space.
This is the second live space lecture in China. In 2013, with the assistance of two other Shenzhou X crew members, Wang hosted the country’s first live space lecture to over 60 million schoolchildren across China.
More space to teach
Compared with the class eight years ago, this year’s space lecture is greatly different. The “classroom” is bigger. Instead of Tiangong I experimental module (实验舱), this year Wang had the space lecture in the Tianhe space core module (核心舱), which is the biggest spacecraft developed by China.
Technological development
The quality of space to ground communication is also much improved.
The space lecture eight years ago sometimes faced the challenges of the video freezing and an unclear picture, but this year’s lecture is different.
With the help of China’s Tianlian sallies, the transmission (传输) speed has been highly increased and the whole live broadcast has run smoothly. These changes show that Chinese aerospace industry has made great progress in the past eight years.
More courses
Along with the technological progress, this year’s space lecture discussed more areas in science. Eight years ago, students could watch the interesting phenomenon of weightlessness in space on TV. But this year, biology was added.
Though these space lectures showed various topics, the aim behind the lectures has never changed. The space lectures aim to “spread knowledge about manned spaceflights and light up the interests for science among young people”. The spirit of science in the youth is an important driver of the progress of mankind. The space lecture makes young Chinese people take pride in our country as they see the rapid development of our space technology.

Clint Masse, a Canadian man, is one of them. Last winter he and his team worked six and a half days a week. After three weeks of work, they did it. They broke the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest snow maze.
Masse lives in Manitoba. It is in northern Canada. The man has built snow mazes for more than 20 years. However, he had never completed such a large one. The maze covered an area of 2,790 square meters. It had walls that were 2 meters tall and 0.6 meters thick. It took about 30 minutes to walk through the maze, depending on your luck.
The maze cost Masse 57,000 Canadian dollars. The man and his team used a snow machine to make enough snow for the project. Man-made snow is stronger than natural snow. “If you drive through the snow walls, you will break your car before you break the walls,” Masse said.
Masse felt excited when he knew he had broken the Guinness World Record. He said his family had a poor life. So the record was very important. It brought thousands of visitors to his large maze and also lots of money.

Last year, they left their home and started to move north. They visited many places in Yunnan. They walked through: mountains, forests, rivers and even city streets. They ate in the fields and slept in the wild. No one knows when the elephants will stop moving. For protecting the elephants, experts used drones(无人机)to watch them closely.
Asian elephants are usually kind. But when they are scared, they may attack(攻击)people. Experts put fences(围栏)and trucks between the elephants and people. They used tons of food like bananas and pineapples to lead the elephants to safe places.

As students, we have many classes at school. But in this picture, it is a special (特别的) class. At school, our teachers are in the classroom. This woman teacher is not. She is in the Chinese space station (太空站). So the class is called “the class in the space”. The beautiful teacher’s name is Liu Yang. She is the first Chinese woman astronaut. She teaches us science by doing experiments (实验) in the space. Even we can call her to ask questions (问问题). China is very great. We Chinese are exploring (探索) the space. I must study hard. One day I want to be an astronaut as Miss. Liu.

At 15:40 on December 9th, 2021, the “space teacher”, Wang Yaping, made some experiments (实验) in the Tianhe Core Module of the Chinese Space Station.
“Welcome to the ‘Tiangong Classroom’!” said Wang Yaping.
●Taking a “spacewalk” is difficult
Ye Guangfu was working hard to walk, but his body floated! Then he tried to turn around but he couldn’t. “In space, astronauts are in a weightless environment. So we need to use nearby devices(装置) to move,” he said.
● The paper flower “blooms”
In the “Tiangong Classroom”, Wang Yaping made a beautiful water film (薄膜). Then she took out a paper flower and placed it on the film of water. The pink flower slowly “bloomed”! “I hope your dreams can bloom in the huge universe (宇宙)!” she said.
●“Space Happy Ball” brings fun
Wang Yaping asked the children on the ground to put their ping pong ball in the water. The density (密度) of the ball was less than that of the water, so it floated up.
In space, when she put the ping pong ball into the water, it did not float up to the surface. It stopped in the center of the water!
“The buoyancy (浮力) disappears in a weightless environment in space so the ping pong ball cannot float,” Ms Wang explained.
1. What does the underlined word “blooms”mean in Chinese?A.成长 | B.绽放 | C.枯萎 | D.凋零 |
