James Shannon is a chef in a London restaurant. Here he tells us about his job.
I work at Suzie’s, one of the most popular restaurants in London. I started by washing the dishes when I was only 16. I wasn’t interested in food and I never cooked at home, but I worked hard, and soon became a waiter. Simon was the head chef at that time. He then began to show me how to cook food. I loved it so much that I went to college to learn more.
When Simon left Suzie’s, I became the head chef. At that time, all the food was British. The food was excellent, but I wanted to do something different, so I decided to have food from all around the world. There are so many fantastic food shops in London that I can usually find any ingredient (烹饪食材) I need.
I use a lot of natural ingredients. Some people think that healthy food is boring, but that isn’t true. Natural food can be more delicious than fast food. Our food is healthy and people love it. We use the best meats and vegetables.
Suzie’s is open Monday to Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., and from 11:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. at weekends. On Fridays and Saturdays we have live ( 现场演出的) music. And there’s a children’s menu on Sundays.

②“Finding a job” is not the same as “choosing a job”. Many young people can’t get right jobs. Here are a few steps to help you think about jobs which you might enjoy doing after you leave school or university.
③First, it is important to know what kind of person you are, what special qualities you have and what you are interested in? There is a difference between an interest and a skill. If you like art and enjoy looking at pictures, that is an interest. But if you can draw a horse and it looks like a horse not a big dog, that is a skill.
④Then ask yourself a question, “Of the following three skills—skill with people, skill with information and skill with things, which is my best skill?”
⑤After finding out your best skill, the next step is to study carefully. To find out as many different kinds of jobs as possible, go to the library and read books, magazines and newspapers for information. Ask your friends what they think of the work they do.
⑥The last step is to trust your own ideas and your own thinking! It is your own life. Just find the job you really enjoy doing.

When you travel, how do you usually keep a record of the places you have visited? Some people take photos or videos, others write travelogues(游记). But Berk Armagan has chosen a different way to do so—painting on paper cups.
Berk is a 26-year-old artist from Turkey. In 2016, he started painting on cups while traveling around the world. So far, he has been to more than 60 cities in 25 countries.
The artist usually decides what to paint before he visits a city. But sometimes, he also draws inspiration from the streets and buildings after he arrives. He makes use of his time on the road to paint. This gives him a limited amount of time for each piece of work. This pressure, he thinks, makes the creation process more interesting.
Berk has shared his artworks on the Internet. These paintings and the story of his travels have won him many followers. The artist also sells his artworks. Part of this income(收入)helps him continue his travels. He uses the rest of the money to help people and animals in need. For example, he has provided food and shelter for homeless animals in Turkey.
Today, the artist is still traveling and making paper cup art. And his online followers are also waiting to see what his next painting on the road will be!

There are a few things that make this chicken salad different from other chicken salads. First, we use jam (果酱) in the relish. You can buy any jam, like banana jam or orange jam. But we have bottles of strawberry jam that my mother made, so we use the strawberry jam. Second, we put some green olives (橄榄). Green olives give the salad a nice taste and make a big difference. Now let me tell you how my family makes the salad.
First mix up all of the salad ingredients in a large bowl. The ingredients are chicken, tomatoes, green olives, onions and apples. If you like lettuce, you can also put some. Next, make the relish. Please mix the jam, the juice and the salt. Finally, mix the relish with the salad ingredients.

Gui Haichao is a young professor at Beihang University. On May 30, 2023, he arrived at China’s space station by Shenzhou XVI spacecraft. He has become an idol for numerous people in China overnight.
Gui grew up in a rural family in Shi Dian County, Yunnan Province. He loved science as a child. He kept a set of encyclopedias (百科全书) from which he gained a lot of knowledge about space. In his second year of high school, he listened to the campus radio and got the news of Yang Liwei’s first space flight for China. Suddenly, he felt excited, and his interest in exploring (探索) space began. After his college entrance examination, Gui placed first in science in his county, and he was admitted to Beihang University.
“I wasted no time in applying,” Gui remembered the moment when he found the notice. In 2018, China made a plan to recruit (招募) its third group of astronauts. After several rounds of selection for more than two years, Gui stood out among about 2,500 candidates and became one of the four selected payload experts.
Over the past few years, Gui has got survival training (生存训练) in deserts and been trained to handle those complex (复杂的) equipment (设备). He learned to do experiments in the space environment. The training was a great challenge for him. “I felt very dizzy often,” said Gui. “So I added exercise and used some methods used by pilots.”
As a teacher, Gui was strict about studying. When reviewing essays for students, he would always give the right advice in detail. Gui would sometimes list 30 to 40 suggestions, even pointing out incorrect images. In the eyes of his students, Gui is positive (乐观的) and open-minded, seldom affected by a bad mood. I am Turere. I come from Kitengela, a farming community on the edge (边缘) of Nairobi National Park of Kenya (肯尼亚). Since the age of nine, I have helped to look after my family’s cows. As a child, in my free time, I enjoyed playing with electronics. I made my own inventions, such as electronics toys from car parts and other things. I also built other electronic devices (仪器) for my neighbors.
At the age of 13, I invented something that changed my life. It also changed the lives of many people in my community. One night, a lion from the park came into my family’s farm and killed one of our cows. I was angry. However, killing the lion, I thought, was not the best way to solve the problem. Instead, I decided to invent a solution.
The first idea I got was to use fire, because I thought lions were scared of fire. But I came to realize that didn't really help, because it was even helping the lions to see through the cowshed (牛棚). So I didn't give up. I continued.
And a second idea I got was to use a scarecrow (稻草人). I was trying to trick the lions into thinking that I was standing near the cowshed. But lions are very clever. They will come the first day and they see the scarecrow, and they go back. But the second day, they'll come and they say, this thing is not moving here, it is always here!
