Scientists who study happiness have evidence (证据) to show that being kind to others can result in happiness. Acts as simple as buying a cup of coffee for someone can lift a person’s mood, for example. Everyday life is full of chances for such actions, yet people do not always make the most of them.
In studies, behavioral scientist Nicholas Epley and I examined a possible explanation: people who do kind acts underestimate (低估) how much the ones receiving kindness value their behavior.
In the experiments (实验), about 1, 000 people were asked to do some actions to make someone else feel good. We asked both the person performing (执行) the kind act and the one receiving it to answer some questions. The performers were asked to report their own experience and to guess how the receivers might feel. We wanted to understand how valuable people considered these acts to be, so both the performer and receiver had to rate (评分) how “big” the act seemed. In all cases, we compared the performer’s expectations of the receiver’s mood with the receiver’s actual (实际的) experience.
For one, both performers and receivers experienced more positive (积极的) moods. For another, the receivers felt much better than the kind performers expected. The receivers also rated these acts as “bigger” than the people performing them did.
At first, we studied acts of the kindness done for familiar people, such as friends, classmates or family. But we found that performers underestimated their positive influences on strangers as well. In one experiment, performers in a public park gave away hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day to people that just happened to be nearby. Again, the kind act brought more happiness than the performers expected.
These findings suggest that what might seem small could matter a great deal to the person we do it for. Considering these warm actions can improve our own mood and brighten the day of another person, why not choose kindness when we can?

“When I was a small child”, Zhang said, “I knew March 5 was a day for people to learn from Lei Feng and help others, but I didn’t know the real meaning of the spirit(精神) of Lei Feng. Now when I see the smiling faces of the kids I have helped, I deeply understand Lei Feng. Helping others makes me happy.”
Lei Feng (1940-1962) is one of the most famous soldiers in Chinese history. He lost his parents when he was very young. His neighbors brought him up. He died in an accident at 22. He did many good deeds(好事) in his short life. For example, he gave his own money to the parents of another soldier. And bought tickets for a woman he didn’t know without telling her his name.
On March 5, 1963, Chairman Mao(毛主席) called on(号召) people to “Learn from Lei Feng” and made the day “Lei Feng Day”.
Today almost 50 years has passed since Lei’s death. Some people say that the spirit of Lei Feng is outdated(过时的).
But many people think we need to promote(提倡) that spirit again. There have been many reports about the coldness of people toward strangers. This has made many Chinese people think deeply about themselves.
“The most important thing is that we must be ready to help others and make it a habit.” said Huang Tianze, a student from Jianlan High School in Zhejiang.

The young girl with thick glasses and short black hair, who is now the much-respected founder and president of the Huaping High School for Girls in Lijiang, Southwest China’s Yunnan province, was smiling brightly into the camera.
Net users are deeply touched by the fresh-looking young face in the picture, which is totally different from Zhang’s now aged and lined face people are familiar with, as it tells a story of a woman who has devoted her life to promoting education and fighting poverty in poor areas.
Born in Northeast China’s Heilongjiang province in 1957, Zhang traveled to Yunnan at the age of 17 and has been helping girls from poor areas pursue education for over 40 years.
Zhang helped establish the country’s first senior high school to offer free education for girls from poor families. Since its opening in 2008, it has seen more than 1, 800 students progress to universities and colleges.
In July, 2020, the All-China Women’s Federation awarded Zhang a top honour for being an outstanding female role model in China. On February 25, 2021 Zhang Guimei was recognized as one of the role models for poverty alleviation (扶贫), and received a national honorary title from President Xi Jinping.
“I am glad that I work as a bridge,” says the strong-willed woman, “through which the local kids may get a chance to learn the broad and colorful outside the world.”

A new report about the health effects of volunteering finds that helping others on a regular basis can reduce early life mortality rates by 22%, compared to those in people who don’t take part in such activities.
The report also shows that volunteers benefit from an increased sense of life satisfaction, increased social contact and reduced loneliness. It seems that helping others can make you feel good. But don’t expect to enjoy the benefits of a long life by just giving a few coins. It takes a lot of time and effort to get the benefits that come from volunteering. In the research, people volunteered to work at least an hour once a month.
Though volunteering to do something can be too much of a good thing, the researchers in order to care for others can become less healthy both mentally and physically, since they often feel stressed by the heavy responsibilities. The same can be true of other kinds of volunteering, if the activities start to become a burden.
“There may be a fine line between volunteering enough to experience mental health benefits and spending too much time volunteering. If volunteering becomes a burden, this may lead to burnout.” the researchers say.
They also note that more work is needed to understand whether volunteering can improve one’s health and lead to a longer life; it seems that volunteers are generally more active and socially engaged, so they become healthier.

They also provide food for animals like fish. The climate change and human pollution are threatening sea grass meadows in many places around the world. But the huge sea grass meadow in Shark Bay, off the coast of Western Australia, seems to be growing very well. It’s a kind of sea grass called Posidonia australis, and it has spread widely all through Shark Bay.
Scientists from The University of Western Australia and Flinders University wanted to study the sea grass, so they took samples (样本) from 10 different parts of this huge meadow. By comparing the DNA from their samples, the scientists hoped to get an idea of how many different sea grass plants there were in the meadow. What they learned shocked them—all of the grass samples had almost exactly the same DNA. It meant that they were all just one plant. One big sea grass plant spread out over 200 square kilometers. This makes it the largest known plant in the world, by far.
So how has the Shark Bay sea grass grown so large? Instead of spreading with flowers and seeds (种子), it spreads by cloning (克隆) itself. As its roots (根) spread out under the sea flour, new plants shoot up from those roots. The Shark Bay sea grass generally grows and spreads about 35 centimeters a year. From this, the scientists believe that the plant is about 4,500 years old.

In fact, the brain is much more powerful than any super computer! Think about when a glass is just about to fall off the table. Your brain controls everything that you need to do to save that glass from falling. First your eyes check out what’s going on, then tell your brain, and your brain decides how quickly you need to react (反应), and then your muscles (肌肉) go into action. That is just from your brain. No computer could ever come close to that!
The brain weighs just 3 pounds, but it controls everything you do from thinking, learning, and feeling even to breathing and your heart beating. Even though the brain is just 2% of your body weight, it uses around 20% of all your energy in your body. That is a lot for such a small organ (器官). There are about 100 billion tiny, tiny little cells (细胞) in your brain. There are so many that it would take you over 3,000 years to count them all!
Your brain stops growing when you’re 18, but it actually keeps on developing and learning new things. So your parents are really super smart! You won’t be able to fool them! Believe it or not, your brain NEVER stops working. Even during sleeping, the brain works for long-term memory establishment (建立). It is realized that the brain is the second organ in the body as the heart that never stops during human lives.
So everyone should be proud of such a gift of nature.

As you can see, the paintings are created just in black and white. It is said that the technique was invented by an artist named Wang Wei.
Ink wash paintings often feature trees, flowers, landscapes, animals, birds and people. Also, they often go with Chinese poems. The painting style does not put high importance on a precise description of a real scene or object. They are often improvised (即兴的) works from beautiful scenery (风景). Therefore, this type of painting is hard to copy. Today there are many new Chinese artists that use the traditional Chinese ink wash technique to draw new sceneries and pictures.
The first ink wash animation (动画) in China came out in 1960. It’s called Little Tadpole Looking for Mummy. All the animals, plants and rocks in the film are drawn with ink and brush. The film is about 15 minutes long. But it took lots of work. Without computers, the artists had to draw everything by hand. One second of animation needs 24 pictures! Little Tadpole Looking for Mummy won prizes at home and abroad. From then on, ink wash painting and animation becomes more popular in China. People in the world get to know more about ink wash since then!

Perhaps you’ve seen the English letters “WC” in your city. They show public toilets. But do you know it is far from native(地道的)English? In fact, foreigners from English-speaking countries seldom use the letters.
Workers in our city are changing, “WC” signs all over the city. The government is spending much money changing all the bad English on signs and restaurant menus. Many other places in China are following our steps.
“WC, or water closet, is old-fashioned English. It sounds dirty to me.” says Nancy, a young woman from the US. The old sign will become “Gents/Men” and “Ladies/Women”. “I see much poor English in daily life, and not only on signs,” she says, “I know what they mean, but they are Chinglish, not real English. For example, when someone says to me ‘My hometown is Guizhou Province’, I know he or she should say ‘My hometown is in Guizhou Province’. Hometown is a smaller place in a province.” The common mistakes that Nancy picked up include “Not Entry”, which should be “No Entry”, “Direction of Airport” should be changed to “To the Airport”. And it is “Room Rate”, not “Room Price”. And remember to “Keep off the Grass” rather than “Care of the Green”. The next time you walk on the street or eat in the restaurant, you can go and see if the expressions(表达) are right.

First, reading is fun. You can always keep yourself happy if you like reading. You will never feel bored or tired.
Next, you can read a book almost anywhere---in a car, on a plane, or even in the bathroom. All you need is a book!
Another good reason for reading is that it is useful. If you read as a hobby, you will get better and better at it. And you will read faster and find it easier to understand what you read. As your reading skills improve, you will probably find your schoolwork becomes much better.
Some people say that reading is out of date. This is not true. You can read on computers, and the better you read, the better your computer skills will be.
Good readers may become writers too. They always have more things to write about.
If you wish to become a good reader, here are four important points to remember about speed of reading:
Knowing why you are reading---what you are reading to find out---will often help you to know whether to read quickly or slowly.
Some things should be read slowly throughout. Examples are instructions for making or doing something, solving math problems, and science and history books, which are full of important information. You must read such things slowly to remember each important idea.
Some things should be read quickly throughout. Examples are simple stories for enjoyment, letters from friends and news from local newspapers, which tell what was happening to friends and neighbors.
In some of your reading, you must change your speed from fast to slow or from slow to fast as you go along. You need to read certain pages quickly and then slow down and do more careful reading when you come to important ideas which must be remembered.

It is not a very big planet. It is about half the size of the earth. The earth has one moon. Mars has two moons. They are called Photos and Deimos.
Long ago, the only way to study Mars was just to look at it. People with good eyes could see somethings but not everything.
Later on, it was easier, because scientists had telescopes. They could see Mars more clearly. They learned much more about Mars this way.
In the 20th century things got even better. First of all we had spacecraft(宇宙飞船). They flew close to Mars and sent back information. Then, they sent spacecraft to fly in orbit (轨道) around Mars. Finally, spacecraft landed on Mars. Maybe one day a man will walk on Mars.
A man named Jamie works for NASA with the team sending a spacecraft to Mars. “We landed a rover(探测车)on Mars” he says. “It is called Curiosity.”
What is a rover? It is a machine that looks like a car. It can move about on Mars. It has cameras to take photos and it sends them back to the earth. It can study the rocks and air of Mars. It sends all this information back to the earth.
