In the eyes of many foreigners, Chinese are the best hosts in the world. The guest-host relationship in China is much more different than that in some western countries, and western guests sometimes look rude in the eyes of Chinese guests.

In China, guests are almost like gods. Whenever I enter a Chinese person’s home, there is always fruit on the table for me, and someone is quick to bring me a cup of tea or water. In the west, generally the guest is not a god. Acting according to the host’s way of doing things is usual behavior for a guest.

My wife’s mother, a very kind elderly Chinese lady, doesn’t smoke. When I see some of her guests smoking in her house, as a non-smoker, I feel unhappy. Usually I want to stop them directly, but I must realize that in China, to be a good host, she must not do that. In most North American homes, if you are a guest, and the hosts are not smokers, you should not smoke in their house. You could ask, “Is it OK if I smoke?” But, don’t be surprised if they say, “No, you can’t smoke.”

Guests in China also have special habits. Some western people may not adapt to these habits very soon. Thankfully my wife is Chinese, so whenever we visit a Chinese family she tells me to buy them a gift. However, giving a gift to a host is not always necessary in my country. So, if you invite foreign guests to your home, don’t be too surprised if they don’t bring you a gift.

In China, you probably won’t need to change the guest-host relationship very much because you will probably only be the host, and Chinese are naturally very good hosts. If western hosts invite you to their house, try not to be too surprised if their style of treating you is not what you have expected.

【推荐1】I have a rule for travel: never carry a map. I prefer to ask for directions.
Foreign visitors are often puzzled (迷惑的) in Japan because most streets there don’t have names. In Japan, people use landmarks in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go pass a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”
In the countryside of the American Midwest, usually there are not many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat (平坦的). In many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distance. In Kansas or lowa, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”
People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map: the measure (测量) distance by means of time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” you say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t know.
People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions because visitors seldom understand the Greek language. Instead of giving you the direction, a Greek will often say, “Follow me.” Then he’ll lead you through the streets of the city to the post office.
Sometimes a person doesn’t know the answer to your question. What happen in this situation? A New Yorker might say, “sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answer, “I don’t know.” They think that it is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A visitor can get lost in Yucatan.
One thing will help you everywhere. You might not understand a person’s words, by maybe you can understand his body language. He or she will usually turn and then point in the correct direction.

文章大意:作者介绍了中西方餐桌文化的不同,在西方国家,人们吃饭有自己的一盘子食物,而在中国大家共用一桌子菜肴。

【推荐2】Of course, the main difference on the Chinese dinner table is chopsticks instead of knife and fork, but that’s only superficial (表面上的). Besides, in some good restaurants, you can always ask for a pair of knife and fork, if you find the chopsticks not helpful enough.

The real difference is that in the West, you have your own plate of food, while in China the dishes are placed on the table and everyone shares. If you are being treated to a formal (正式的) dinner and especially if the host thinks you’re in the country for the first time, he will do the best to give you a taste of many different types of dishes.

The meal usually begins with a set of at least four cold dishes, to be followed by the main courses (菜肴) of hot meat and vegetable dishes. Soup then will be served (unless in Guangdong style restaurants) to be followed by staple food such as rice, noodles, dumplings and so on. If you wish to have your rice to go with other dishes, you should say so in good time, for most of the Chinese choose to have the staple food at last or have none of them at all.

Perhaps one of the things that surprise a western visitor most is that some of the Chinese hosts like to put food into the plates of their guests. In formal dinners, there are always “public” chopsticks and spoons for this purpose, but some hosts may use their own chopsticks. This is a sign of friendship and politeness. It is always polite to eat the food. If you do not eat it, just leave the food in the plate.

People in China tend to (往往会) over-order food, for they will find it embarrassing if all the food is consumed. When you have had enough, just say so. Or you will always overeat!
