Passage C
It was a Christmas night. I was an unlucky nurse who had to work on such a beautiful festival. I wasn’t happy about it. When I was complaining about it, three people appeared at my desk — a tired woman and two children.
“Are you all sick?” I asked doubtfully because they seemed all right. “Yes,” the woman answered weakly and lowered her head.
But when they started to present their problems, things became unclear. One child had a fever, but his temperature was OK. The other child had an earache, but she could not tell me which ear hurt. It seemed that the mother was pretending(假装)to cough.
Something was wrong. But I only explained that it might take a while before a doctor could meet them. “Take your time, please,” said the mother. I checked their charts — no address. Suddenly I knew, they were homeless while the hospital was warm.
The family huddled(蜷缩)together under the Christmas tree, smiling and talking with each other sweetly. Quietly, I went back to the nurse station and told them what happened in the waiting room. It was just like God sending us a gift on Christmas Day. The nurse station suddenly came back to life. All the nurses went into action for “a Christmas emergency(急诊)”.
We took out our meals for our Christmas “patients”. We also put together oranges and apples as presents. We tried to give them more than their needs of a family who only wanted a warm place on Christmas night. Later, the little girl kissed me and said, “Thanks for being our angel(天使).”

The hungry children quickly gathered around the basket and started to fight over the bread. But Gretchen, a poorly-dressed little girl, did not join in the fighting. She stood far away quietly and waited until the children left. Then, she took the only loaf in the basket, kissed the old man’s hand, and went home.
The next day the children acted the same as before, and poor Gretchen got an even smaller loaf. When she came home and her mother cut the loaf open, many pieces of silver (银子) fell out of it.
Her mother was very much alarmed, and said, “Take the money back to the good old man at once. It must have got into the bread by accident.”
As the little girl gave the money to the old man, he said, “No no, my child, it was no mistake. I put the silver pieces into the smallest loaf to reward (奖赏) you. Always stay as happy and thankful as you are right now. Go home now, and tell your mother that the money is your own.”

On a winter afternoon, I was playing with my friend near the old lady’s backyard. I found a perfectly smooth rock and threw it out, but the stone hit a small window of her house. Suddenly, I saw the old lady standing behind the window. We knew we were in trouble, and ran away quickly. We were scared about that we would be caught and didn’t worry about the old lady with the broken window in winter.
The next morning, she was still greeting me with a smile when I gave her the newspaper. I made up my mind to save my money to correct my mistake. After four weeks, I had ten dollars. I put the money in an envelope (信封) with a note explaining everything and hoped that the ten dollars would cover the cost for repairing the window.
I waited until it was dark, and put the envelope in her door. The next day, I handed the old lady her newspaper and she thanked me for it as usual and gave me a bag of cookies. After eating several cookies, I found an envelope and pulled it out. When I opened it, I was surprised. Inside were the ten dollars and a short note that said, “I’m proud of you.” I smiled in relief. Fathers have a lot of love to give, but it’s often supplied through the medium (方法) of practical advice. In my experience: It’s mostly about my car.
“How’s the car running?” “Did you get it serviced?” “How did you get that scrape (刮痕) on the side?”
Why can’t fathers just say “I love you” or “It’s great to see you”? The point is: That’s exactly what we are saying. You just have to translate from the language that is Fatherlish.
The words “You made my life better from the moment you were born” may be hardly heard, but the key is there in the more common “I’ll hold the ladder while you get the leaves out of the gutter (排水沟).”
When I was 17, I went on my first road trip—a friend and I in that old car. My father stood on the corner early on a cold morning to say goodbye to us.
“Highways are dangerous,” he said, “so don’t try to catch up with anything faster than a horse. And take a break every two hours. And every time you stop for gas, you really should check the oil.”
At the time we thought his speech was pretty funny and would chant “car and horse, car and horse” every time I drove faster and passed other speeding cars.
Dad’s long gone now. But after all these years, I realize that had I owned a copy of the Fatherlish-to-English dictionary, I’d have understood that the speech my friend and I so casually mocked (嘲笑) was simply Dad’s attempt at affection.
