The most basic and powerful way to connect with another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our full attention.

When people are talking, there is no need to do anything but listen to their words. Just take them in. Listen to what they are saying. Care about it. Caring is even more important than understanding. It has taken me a long time to believe in the importance of saying “I’m so sorry” when someone is in trouble.

One of my friends told me that when she tried to tell her story, people often broke in to tell her that something similar happened to them. For some reason or other, her trouble became a story about them. In the end, she stopped talking to most people. She was just too lonely. We connect through listening. When we interrupt (打断) someone to let them know that we understand, we move attention to ourselves. When we listen, they know we care.

It’s not that easy to learn to listen. It certainly went against everything that I was taught. I thought people listened only because they were too shy to speak or did not know the answer. A loving silence often has more importance to help and to connect than the kindest words.

1. What is the most important when others are talking according to the passage?
A.Sharing.B.Listening.C.Understanding.D.Speaking.
2. The writer’s friend stopped talking to most people because ________.
A.she liked listeningB.she was too shy to talk

3. If we interrupt others when they are talking, we ________.
A.move attention to ourselvesB.care much about them
C.want to help themD.don’t want to listen any more

【推荐2】As a student, I was most afraid to answer questions in class, and I found that the students around were just like me. At the beginning of each class, when the teacher asked a question, I always lowered my head because I was afraid that the teacher saw me.

One day, in a foreign language class, Mr. Brown gave us a lesson. He wanted us to be active in class, so he asked us some questions, but no one answered. “Let me tell you a story first,” he said. “When I came to the United States to study, the university often invited famous people to make speeches. Before the beginning of every speech, I found an interesting thing. The students around me always took a cardboard folded(折叠的) in half, wrote their names boldly with the most eye-catching color, and then placed the cardboard on the seat. So when the speaker needed the answers from the students, he could see and call a listener’s name directly.”

“I couldn’t understand that. My classmate told me the speakers were all top people who meant chances. When your answer was to his surprise, it meant he might give you more chances. In fact, I really saw a few students got great chances because of that.”

After listening to the story, I understood that the chance would not find you itself. You must show yourself all the time so that you could find a chance on the card.

【推荐3】I have always loved music. When I was a teenager, I dreamed of becoming a rock star. Sadly, my effort didn’t match my love, and soon the guitar my mother bought for me lay quietly in the corner. I hated pressing my fingers down on the hard strings. At one time, my guitar teacher shook his head and said I had the rhythm(韵律)of a duck.

Before 2020, I had always believed that I was unable to learn a musical instrument. Then came the lockdown(封控)of 2020. I had to stay in a hotel in Chiang Mai in Thailand with my friend’s guitar. Being locked in the hotel, I had nothing to do but pick up the guitar.

I focused on how to play five of my favorite songs on the guitar. I started slowly, learning how to play by following online classes. I have to agree that counting time(节拍)was very difficult for me, so I gave it up. I just listened to the songs, focused on their rhythms and tried my best to follow them.

Day by day, I started to sound less and less terrible. I practiced the five songs every morning until I found my own rhythm and developed my own style of the songs, even after the lockdown in Chiang Mai was over. Finally, on May 28, 2022, I gave a guitar performance to some strangers and friends. I was so nervous that I forgot to turn the microphone on at the beginning. But when I hit the first chord(和弦), my music was greeted with loud cheers. It was my best memory of 2022.

In short, my word of this past year or the past three years is FOCUS. Time passes by quickly. Another new year has now arrived. Why not set yourself a clear goal (based on your love) and focus on it? Never let anyone tell you what you are not good at. By focusing on your goal, you will be able to surprise everyone.

1. Which is the correct order according to the passage?

②I had nothing to do but play the guitar.
③I hated playing the guitar.
④I followed the online classes and practiced every day.
A.③②④①B.①④③②C.③①②④D.①②④③
2. What can we infer from the underlined sentence “But when I hit the first chord, my music was greeted with loud cheers.” in Paragraph 4?
A.They didn’t like my performance.
B.I played the guitar beautifully.
C.They wanted to sing along with me.
D.I didn’t play the guitar well at first.
3. Who may be encouraged most after reading the story?
A.A man who is ill.B.A trader who is rich.
C.An actor who is famous.D.A teenager who often fails.
