Every time when I felt upset or sick, I liked to go to a special place where I could relax myself. It is the club. I joined the club 3 years ago. My sister recommended this place to me. They told me that I could find lots of fun there. It’s near my house and our hospital. I usually stayed there for 2 or 3 hours and went home. I loved the club because I felt comfortable there!
The club only allowed women to be members. I didn’t worry about my privacy. The club was the biggest women’s club in my country where there was a lot of space to do the different activities. You could see a beautiful warm water pool. You could find many big rooms behind the pool. There was a cold room, an exercise room, an MTV center, a message center, and two restaurants.
Everyone knew working in the hospital had many stresses. I needed to find a way to relax myself. It’s the best choice for me. I often took a shower first and then swam for 20 minutes to relax myself. When I finished the exercise, I liked to watch a video and take a short sleep. Although it costs a lot of money to be a club member, I hope I can join the club again after I come back to my country.

Food was a big problem in China in the past. This was because China had 22 percent of the world’s population, but only 7 percent of its farmland. In the 1960s, China suffered serious hunger. Millions of people died because they had no food. As an agronomy (农学) teacher, Yuan was very sad to see this. “How can I help them have enough food?” he thought. He decided to work on a kind of hybrid rice. It has a high output.
At that time, other scientists didn’t think hybrid rice was worth studying. But Yuan and his team worked on it every day. They took very good care of their rice seeds. At last, in 1973, they grew a new kind of hybrid rice. This rice is strong. Farmers can grow it in many different kinds of farmland and also in bad weather. It can also fight disease. Its output (产量) was much greater than common kinds of rice. With the new kind, about 70, 000, 000 people could have food every year.
Yuan solved the food problem in China. He hoped to grow rice in the sea before he retired. His lifelong wish was to help people all over the world have enough to eat.
“Everyone is like a seed—we should try to grow into good people,” Yuan once said. Let’s remember this ordinary but great man—Yuan Longping.

We have known that if we don’t move much, we will get fatter, we will have heart problems and maybe we will get diabetes (糖尿病). But new studies have shown that it could hurt our mental (精神的) health, too.
A study of 937 Brazilian adults found that about one-third of them sat for more than 10 hours per day. It reported that people who sat for too long often showed more symptoms (症状) of depression (抑郁).
Another study was centered on children. It found that each extra hour of sitting time at the age of 12, 14 and 16 led to higher depression points at age 18.
But according to Mats Hallgren from Sweden, “Sitting for too long can slow the blood flow (流动) in the body, including the blood flow to the head.” It might be bad for the growth of neurons (神经细胞) in the head. Besides, couch potatoes might do other unhealthy things while sitting, such as eating junk food. All of these may lead to depression.
The good news? It’s easy to control. Aaron Kandola from University College London, said even light exercise might help. “It is great to exercise and play sports.” said Kandola. But anything you can do to avoid sitting for too long will help with moods (心情), stress and thinking clearly. The key is just to move more often.

One day, she told us that our class would put on a play she had written. “I need someone to play the lead role (主角). Does anyone want to try?” she asked. A few hands were raised—mine wasn’t one of them. Mrs. Smith walked up to me and said, “I think you’re perfect for it, but you didn’t raise your hand.”
Me, the lead? Was she crazy? Mrs. Smith continued, “I was thinking of you when I created the role! If you really don’t want to, I won’t force you.” Suddenly, I thought it was time to throw away my shyness and show the world who I really was. I looked at Mrs. Smith and said, “OK, I’ll try.”
After five months of practicing, the big day finally arrived. My knees shook and my heart beat like I’d just run a mile. “It doesn’t matter how the performance will be,” said Mrs. Smith, as if reading my thoughts. “You’ve already shown yourself how wonderful you are. That’s the most important thing.”
I smiled because I knew she was right. When I stepped on the stage (舞台), I showed that I could take chances (机会) and be brave enough to make a big change for myself—a girl with new-found confidence (信心).

Another big change is that my new teachers set a lot of homework, especially in math. So you can imagine why my heart wasn't exactly dancing when I started middle school.
By the end of October, Jake and I had become good friends. It happened because I was so hopeless trying to do my math homework. One day, I came to Jake after school.
“Hey, Jake, ”I began, "I was wondering if you could."
“Help you with the math homework, right?" he said, completing my sentence. "Sure, I'd be happy to help you, Miguel.” I was surprised because, to be truthful, I wasn't sure until that moment if Jake even knew my name. And yet here he was happy to save me from drowning in my sea of math problems.
That night, Jake and I studied together, and it was time well spent. I must say that Jake is an excellent math teacher.
The next day in class, I was even able to answer one of the math problems. Our teacher was surprised when I raised my hand, and guess what-so was I!
They say time flies when you're having fun, and I guess it's really true. I can't believe winter vacation is almost here! The school days have been flying by like a jet plane. I suppose it's because I'm a much more focused student-especially in math-than I ever was before.
Jake and I plan to hang out together during winter break. He promised to show me the Math Museum downtown. I believe it will be an unforgettable experience for us.
