I frowned (皱眉) at myself in the dressing-room mirror. I was wearing white tights and a white swim cap that hid most of my hair. I was one of 10 snowflakes (雪花) in my dance school’s Winter Wonderland show. I’d learned in science class that no two snowflakes are alike, but all of us snowflakes were wearing the same clothes.
“What’s wrong, Avery?” Grandma looked at me in the mirror. “You love to dance.”
I used to love to dance. But Ms. Tuttle gave the part of the Snow Queen to Christine. Christine got to wear a blue leotard and a feathery skirt. And she got to do a dance on stage all by herself. But the snowflakes just had to run and spin to look like a strong snowstorm.
I whispered, “No one would notice if I wasn’t there. You came all this way, but now you won’t be able to tell me apart from the other snowflakes.” Grandma was about to speak. Then something outside the window caught her eyes. She took my hand and my coat to the outside. It was snowing. Big swirling flakes. Grandma took a deep breath and said, “In Hawaii, it snows only on the very tops of mountains.”
I had seen snow lots of times, but now I tried to see it differently, like it looked new to me. I saw snowflakes flying through the air in different directions, shining brightly in the light. So many snowflakes coming together to create something magical. “Snow changes the way the whole world looks,” I said. Grandma nodded. We watched the snow for a few more minutes, even though our toes were turning to ice. Then the wind settled down and the last flakes melted (融化) away. “Aloha,” Grandma whispered to the sky. “Aloha” can mean many things, including “love”, “hello” and “goodbye”. “I don’t know when I’ll see something like that again.”
“I do,” I said. I took Grandma Lani’s hand and pulled her back inside.
When the stage lights came up and the music started, I spun and ran with all of the other snowflakes. I didn’t care if Grandma Lani could see me. I was dancing for my grandma to see snowflakes!

I know that you’ve both had much fun these years. But now I want to tell you a little more about why I decided to take our family on this journey.
When I was a young man, I thought life was all about me — about how I’d make my way in the world, become successful, and get the things I want. But then the two of you came into my world and suddenly, all my big plans didn’t seem so important any more. I soon found that the greatest happiness in my life was finding that feeling in you two. And I realized that my own life wouldn’t mean much if I couldn’t make you two happy. In the end, girls, I ran for President: because of what I want for you and for every child in the US.
I want all our children to go to school so that they can learn and grow. I want them to have the chance to go to college — even though their parents don’t have enough money. And I want them to get good jobs.
I want us to see new technologies and inventions that improve our lives and make our earth cleaner and safer. And I want us to see no difference of different colors and areas because we are all equal.
I hope both of you will start to give others the chances you’ve had. You know, this country has given our family so much, so you have to, and really should, give something back. When you are doing something larger than yourself, you will realize how helpful you are.
These are the things I want for you — to grow up in a world where you can make your dreams come true. And I want every child to have the same chances to learn and dream and grow and get what you girls have.
That’s why I’ve taken our family on this great adventure.
Love,
Dad

Warm steam (蒸汽) came from the kitchen. It touched my nose and suddenly I felt like I was 8 years old again. Dad was making Grandma’s special sauce.
Growing up, Grandma would make us an Italian meal every Sunday after church. She would slowly cook her spaghetti sauce (酱汁) for hours, throwing in olive oil, salt, sugar, pepper, bay leaves (香叶), and garlic. Then she would drop in potatoes, chicken, meatballs and sometimes even steak. When it was ready, we would mix it in the spaghetti, serve it on plates, and added cheese on top. It always left our stomachs full, our hearts happy and our house smelling yummy.
I sat down when Dad made me a plate. I felt like a boy again. We talked about those old times and laughed over the memories, both good and bad. And I noticed something too. I didn’t feel cold anymore. My heart was warm, and my spirit was light.
Dad and Grandma have been gone for years now. I still miss them both every single day. Although my daughter and I both know how to make Grandma’s special sauce, we don’t cook it as often as we should. No matter how hard I try, I can never get it quite right. Maybe I am missing an ingredient. Or maybe, it was just the love with which they cooked it that made it so delicious. Either way, this winter, I am going to make it again. I need its warmth. I need its goodness.

The king’s mother told her son not to take the mother dove away because the dove was a symbol of love. After hearing these, the king went out to meet his enemy(敌人) without his helmet.
