The moment the alarm goes off in the morning, the battle between children and parents starts. “Pack your bag quickly!” “Have you collected all your books?” “Hurry up or you will be late!” The shouts of impatience are in our cars. Being too slow to pack up a schoolbag or missing books creates a problem for us students. To solve this problem, we invented a smart schoolbag called “Zhi An Qi”.

We wanted to make our schoolbag easy to use. With a single click, it can show which books inside and which ones haven’t been added according to our daily plans.

To scan(扫描)many books at a time we researched available technologies, which we found, didn’t meet our needs. However, What the librarian was doing interested us. Using a machine to scan a number of books, he could see the returned books on the computer right away. What he used was radio frequency identification(RFID,射频识别)! We were overjoyed and quickly made a plan. Soon everyone got his task. With the whole team’s work, we designed the basic functions(功能)of the smart schoolbag and successfully applied for a patent(专利).

Only making a model didn’t satisfy us. What we wanted was to turn it into a real product. To this end, we began writing business plans and communicating with businessmen. In the next step, we will continue to improve it and make it possible for different sizes of bags.

“Of course, the process was quite difficult, as it was our first time to develop a product,” said one team member. “But if you keep going, you will find that all the storms will pass, and finally all the efforts will bring you success.”

Beep! Beep! Barcode (条形码) technology makes it faster and easier to buy things in stores. You’ve probably seen the black-and-white zebra stripes on product packaging (包装). This year, this great invention is 53 years old!

On a Sunday afternoon in 1971, IBM engineer George Laurer came up with a code that could be printed on food labels. It became the basis (基础) for the Universal Product Code, which was used by many fields later, according to The New York Times. Before this, cashiers (收银员) had to change prices by hand.

It turns out to be a great invention. Today, barcodes are scanned (扫描) over 6 billion times every day and used by 2 million companies worldwide, PR Newswire reported.

What information does a barcode have? Where the product comes from, where it has been, its price, expiration date (产品有效期)…you name it. It can also help stores follow the information of their products. For example, if there are 10 boxes of milk and a customer buys one, it will be recorded so that the store owner knows there are nine boxes left. In the 1980s, libraries started using barcodes to keep track of books in this way.

“Its invention allowed companies to control the stock (库存) better and more easily,” José María Bonmatí from AECOC, a Spanish commercial association, told El Mundo.

The next generation of barcodes, such as QR codes, can hold more information. “They can tell consumers (消费者) if a product contains allergens (过敏原) or if it is organic (有机的). This provides consumers with a greater level of trust in the products they buy,” said GS1, an organization that develops global barcode standards.

B.QR codes are more consumer-friendly.
C.GS1 is developing a new kind of barcode.
4. Which word might the writer use to describe barcodes?
A.Harmful.B.Beautiful.C.Convenient.
