According to the traditional Chinese calendar, there are 24 solar terms in a year. The 24 solar terms were created thousands of years ago to guide agriculture production (农业生产). But solar term culture is still useful today to guide people’s lives through cultural activities and special foods that go with each term.

There are six solar terms in winter. They are beginning of winter, light snow, heavy snow, winter solstice (冬至), lesser cold (小寒) and greater cold.

Beginning of winter usually falls on November 7th or 8th. After beginning of winter, most parts of the country can start to expect cold weather. On this day, after a year of hard work, people are happy to have a rest and spend time with family. The northern China celebrates beginning of winter as the “Small Spring Festival”. People usually have dumplings on the day.

Light snow usually falls on November 22nd or 23rd and heavy snow is on December 7th or 8th. When winter solstice comes, it brings the shortest days of the year and the longest nights. Many places around the country can expect the coldest weather. People often start counting “nine cold periods” starting from winter solstice. Every cold period has nine days. People believe that after 81 cold days, spring will come.

Greater cold comes after lesser cold. The field is covered with snow. All Chinese are ready to welcome the Spring Festival after it. Of course, a new round of solar terms will start.

Chinese chopsticks are a pair of sticks to be used when eating. They were first used in China and then introduced to other areas in the world. Chopsticks are considered one of the symbols of Chinese food culture.

When were chopsticks invented? In fact, before the invention of chopsticks, Chinese ancestors actually used hands to eat. Chinese people started to use chopsticks about 3,000 years ago during the Shang Dynasty. During the pre-Qin period, chopsticks were called “Jia”, and in the Qin and Han Dynasties, they were called “Zhu”. Because “Zhu” shares the same pronunciation with “stop” in Chinese, which is an unlucky word, by the Ming Dynasty people began to call them “Kuai”, meaning “fast” in Chinese. This is the origin of today’s name of Chinese chopsticks.

Who invented chopsticks? There is no exact historical record about the question, but there are many folk stories about it. One story is that Jiang Ziya was inspired to create chopsticks by a mythical (神话中的) bird. Another one is that Daji, the favorite wife of the King Zhou of Shang, invented chopsticks in order to please the king. It is also said that Yu the Great, who founded the Xia Dynasty used sticks to pick up hot food in order to save time to control flood.

What should we pay attention to when using chopsticks? When eating with the elders, Chinese people usually let the elders take up chopsticks before anyone else. Besides, playing with chopsticks is thought to be a bad manner. It’s also impolite to tap chopsticks on one’s bowl, because in ancient China beggars (乞丐) often did it to draw attention.

【推荐3】Like many other foreigners, Rosalind Oliver’s first touch of Chinese Tai Chi came from popular kung fu movies. However, she has become a Tai Chi master herself, teaching it to both Chinese and foreigners.

Oliver’s journey with Tai Chi began in her early 20s, when her backache was always troubling her and she was turning to an exercise. Then she discovered advertisement classes about Tai Chi by accident and decided to try the “mysterious” eastern sport. Right away Oliver fell in love with the beautiful movement of Tai Chi. To her joy, she found that her back pains disappeared after years of practice.

Oliver later met her late husband, who was also her Tai Chi teacher. In the early 1990s, the couple opened their own Tai Chi school in the UK. To further understand Tai Chi, they decided to start a journey to China. However, three years after moving to Shanghai in 2000, her husband died, leaving her alone to work on Tai Chi.

The 58-year-old British woman recalled that it was a hard time for her. However, she was thankful to Chinese friends in Shanghai who supported her through the painful process. “They didn’t treat me like a foreigner, but rather like a friend.” Oliver said.

In 2005, Oliver set up the Double Dragon Alliance Cultural Center, which acts as a bridge for foreign people to get a better understanding of Chinese culture such as traditional Chinese medicine and Peking Opera.

Besides her Tai Chi classes, Oliver now teaches English at Shanghai University. Oliver expressed her deep love for cultural exchange and hoped to spread her work in this area.
