Nowadays, it seems that we cannot live without technology. We learn, work and relax by using phones, computers, iPads, AI robots and so on. Now, let’s see what’s going on in Julie’s life.

Julie usually wakes up at the ring of a mobile phone. Then, she eats her breakfast to a video on the phone. When she gets to her company, she deals with the business on the computer. And she often downloads(下载)and stores things that she needs on her iPad. When she needs something, she can just turn on the iPad and search for it. She carries the iPad wherever she is on business because it’s light. When she is at home in the evening, she sometimes uses ChatGPT, a smart AI chat robot, to write her projects. She only needs to type in some key words and then she can get some ideas in a second. It can make her use less time to do more things. In the late evening, she always falls asleep at the soft music from Xiaodu.

Julie lives with technology, and so do we. However, technology brings us some problems at the same time. Staring at screens too much is bad for our eyes. Many of us are near-sighted(近视的)or have other eye problems. AI is making some of us unwilling to think and explore on our own. We may copy ideas from AI robots. We may even like chatting in the virtual(虚拟的)world better because of so many chat robots.

So, I think that technology is a double-sided sword(双刃剑). We should use technology correctly and wisely to make our life easy, colorful and convenient.

2. What does Julie carry when she is on business?
A.A computer.B.An iPad.C.An AI robot.
3. How does the writer develop Paragraph 2?
A.By giving examples.B.By providing reasons.C.By expressing opinions.
4. What can we infer(推断)from the passage?
A.ChatGPT is a smart AI chat robot.
B.AI robots will take the place of us one day.
C.People may communicate less with each other in real life.
5. What’s the best title of the passage?

文章大意:本文主要介绍了ChatGPT需要消耗大量水资源来运行。

【推荐1】Artificial intelligence (AI) can now do amazing things. ChatGPT is an AI that can answer questions, tell stories, and do much more. But it's very“thirsty”, said a new study.

When ChatGPT works, its “home”—data (数据) centers around the world—produces a large amount of heat. Just like when we run or do something active, our bodies get hot. The same happens to the computers in data centers. Workers then have to use water to cool them down. Cold water goes into pipes (管道) near the computers at these centers.Because the computers are very hot, the water turns into vapor (水蒸气) and goes into the air. The water needs to be super clean. If they use sea water, it can eat away the pipes.

If you ask ChatGPT 20 to 50 questions, it needs to “drink” a 500-milliliter bottle of water. When scientists trained ChatGPT, it used 700,000 liters of water, said the study. This is the amount that is needed to make about 370 cars.

ChatGPT is not the only one that needs data centers. Everything you do on the Internet needs data centers to work. There are more than 8,000 data centers in the world, said a report in 2021. Between 2022 and 2023, the number of super data centers increased by 30%, reaching a record 1400.

The number is still growing. If AI keeps using a lot of water, we may have to “fight” with AI for water.

1. What is used to cool down the computers?
A.Hot water.B.Waste water.
C.Sea water.D.Cold clean water.
2. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A.AI can do a lot of things.
B.AI helps make lots of cars.
C.AI needs data centers to work.
D.AI uses a lot of water when working.
3. What can we infer (推断) from the last paragraph?
A.People will be stopped from wasting water.
B.AI will be replaced by other new technology.
C.Data centers won’t need to be cooled down any more.
D.People should control the number of data centers to save water.
4. Which of the following would be the best title?
A.A new inventionB.A more powerful AI
C.Thirsty computersD.The history of computers

2】At a concert in Tsinghua University, Fang Jinlong, a master of the traditional Chinese instrument pipa, and the robots from the Moja Robot Band performed several pieces of Chinese music. The robot musicians in the band, Yuheng, Yaoguang, and Kaiyang, played traditional Chinese instruments at the concert.

The team that developed the band was built in 2018. Mi Haipeng is the chief (首席) scientist of the team. He took part in the research and development of a robot rock band when he studied in Japan. That experience gave him the dream of making a Chinese robot band.

Mi said that the sound and playing style of traditional Chinese musical instruments are different from those in the West. Chinese people pay more attention to the feelings and expression of the players, but these are hard to control for robots. It also brings many posers to Moja robot development.

During the concert, the robot musicians used their “fingers” and “mouths” to play the instruments. Many students said that was the first time they had seen humans and robots play together. And they never thought robots could play so well.

Mi said the pieces of music in the concert were specially made for the robots to play. And there are more performance plans for Moja in the future, introducing new pieces of music. The team will improve the musical sense and emotional (情感的) expression of robots.

【推荐3】Shenzhou XVI spaceship successfully reached space on May 30. There are three people onboard: Jing Haipeng, 57, Zhu Yangzhu, 37, and Gui Haichao, 37.

They are special in many ways. Jing is now the most skilled astronaut in China. This is the fourth time for him to fly into space. Gui is a scientist. He is also the first Chinese civilian on a spaceflight.

Both Zhu and Gui are China’s third-generation astronauts. They were picked in 2020 from a group of researchers and engineers. One woman and 17 men were picked. And they are in three groups. One group is spacecraft pilots. They “fly” the spaceship. Another group is spaceflight engineers. They “fix” the spaceship. There is also a group of science payload specialists (载荷专家), such as Gui. They do scientific studies in space.

Everything in the spaceship is a payload, such as machine, people, and animals. Science payload specialists are scientists onboard.

Gui’s glasses also draw people’s attention because astronauts aren’t usually nearsighted (近视的). But picking specialists is different from picking other astronauts. It’s safe to wear glasses in the space station. However, during the launch and return, Gui needs to take off the glasses.
