Another rich man in Venice was Shylock. He became rich by lending money to others and making them pay interest. While Antonio thought it wrong to make people pay interest. He said the rich should help the poor. Shylock was very angry about this because many people went to borrow money from Antonio instead of borrowing from him. This meant that Shylock earned less money.
When Bassanio visited Shylock, he asked Shylock to lend him three thousand gold coins and said he would pay it back in three months. “How do I know you can pay it back?” asked Shylock. “My friend Antonio will help me. If I do not pay you in three months, he will do it for me,” Bassanio said. Shylock turned to smile. Perhaps this would be a chance.
So Shylock went to visit Antonio at once. When seeing him, Shylock couldn’t help thinking how much he hated him. However, he did not show his hatred. He tried to be friendly. “It’s three thousand gold coins for three months, isn’t it?” Antonio and Bassanio agreed. “What interest will you pay?” Shylock asked. Before long, Antonio and Shylock were arguing about interest. Antonio called Shylock some bad names. Bassanio was worried and stopped Antonio.
Antonio said sorry to Shylock. “If you lend us this money,” pleased Antonio, “I will not call you bad names.”
Shylock pretended to be surprised. “Come with me to the judge,” said Shylock, “so that he can write the contract. I will lend you the money for three months. You will pay no interest. Just for fun, however, let’s agree that if you do not pay me on time, you will give me one pound of your flesh from wherever I choose to take it!”
Antonio agreed. He was certain that he was able to pay back the money on time. “My ships come back a whole month before we have to pay the money.”

Many years ago, in a city in Arabia, there was a boy. His name was Aladdin. He lived with his mother in a little house, and they were very poor(贫穷). Aladdin’s mother worked all day, and sometimes half the night, but Aladdin never helped her.
He was a lazy boy and he did not like to work. He only wanted to play all the time. Every morning he ran through the streets to the market. There, he talked and laughed and played with his friends all day. Then in the evening he went home for his dinner.
And every night his mother said to him, “Oh, Aladdin, Aladdin! You are a lazy boy-a good-for-nothing! When can you do some work, my son?”
But Aladdin never listened to his mother. One day in the market he met an old man in a long black coat. Aladdin did not see him, but the old man watched Aladdin very carefully. After some minutes he went up to an orange-seller(商贩)and asked, “That boy in the green coat—who is he?”“Aladdin, son of Mustafa,” was the answer. The old man moved away. “Yes,” he said quietly. “Yes, that is the boy. The right name, and the right father.” Then he called out to Aladdin, “Boy! Come here for a minute. Is your name Aladdin? Aladdin, son of Mustafa?” Aladdin left his friends and came to the old man. “Yes,” he said, “I am Aladdin, son of Mustafa.”

My name is Robinson Crusoe. I decided to return to England. But I found myself uncomfortable when setting foot again on a ship. I met three different ships, but I pulled back from each before sailing. I had no idea why I didn’t like traveling by ship.
Then two of the ships that I had considered boarding experienced something terrible—one fell to pirates (海盗) and the other was wrecked (使……失事) with only three survivors. So I planned to make a journey by land. Friday and I picked up one young Englishman, two English businessmen, and two young Portuguese (葡萄牙的) gentlemen by the time of our leaving. And five servants were added to our group. Some had quite a big group for the road.
We traveled comfortably until ten days out from Old Castile. The weather turned from hot to cold.
Friday was afraid when he saw the snow-covered mountains, because he had never known the snow or the cold. After years in the tropics (热带地区), I also found it difficult to stand the cold weather. We arrived in Pampeluna in a snowstorm. It was so dangerous that we probably would be covered alive by the thick snow here. We stayed for twenty days in Pampeluna until four French gentlemen arrived safely with a guide.
We invited the guide to lead us and he agreed. “You need to be well prepared,” he warned. “In winter, you may see wolves driven by hunger.”
“We have no fear of those,” I said, “though I have heard of two-legged wolves that sometimes attack travelers on the French side of the mountains.”
