One festival, two cultures: does one nation have the right to call its own? It has been reported that South Korea will apply(申请) to the UNESCO to make the celebration its cultural heritage(遗产). If successful, people from other countries may see the Dragon Festival as a Korean creation.
As the birthplace of the yearly event more than 2, 000 years ago, China is not happy with the situation. “It would be a shame if another country successfully made a traditional Chinese festival part of its own cultural heritage ahead of China,” said Zhou Heping, deputy culture minister. The Ministry of Culture is even thinking of making its own application to UNESCO, covering all traditional Chinese festivals, including the Dragon Boat event.
Over the years, the Dragon Boat Festival has spread throughout the world. In Japan and Viet Nam, as well as South Korea, the festival has mixed with and become part of local culture.
With this in mind, some experts say that it is meaningless to argue about which country the festival belongs to. “No one can deny that it came from China,” said Long Haiqing, an expert from Hunan Province. “But if all the countries involved(参与) can protect culture heritage together, they will all benefit(受益).”

D.Because UNESCO may approve(批准) South Korea's application. |
A.A move by South Korea to cancel its application. |
B.China getting UNESCO's approval of the festival first. |

How wrong I was! The misunderstanding began at the airport. I was looking for a public telephone to tell my American friend Danny that I had arrived. A friendly old man saw me looking lost and asked if he could help me.
“Yes,” I said, “I want to give my friend a ring.”
“Well, that’s nice,” he said, “Are you getting married? But aren’t you too young?”
“Who is talking about marriage?” I replied, “I only want to give my friend a ring to tell him I’ve arrived. Can you tell me where there is a phone box?”
“Oh,” he said, “there is a phone over there.”
When at last we met, Danny explained the misunderstanding to me.
“Don’t worry,” he said to me, “I had so many difficulties at first. There are lots of words which Americans use differently in meaning from British people. You’ll soon get used to all the funny things they say. Most of the time, British and American people understand each other.”

The research shows that children in the UK are reading less in their free time. Just about a quarter of the students said they read outside school. About the same number said their parents didn’t feel that reading was important. Half of those students said they enjoyed reading “very much” or “quite a lot”. About 40% thought reading was “cool”, but about one in three said they only read when they had to.
Jonathan Douglas from the National Literacy Trust said,“Our research not only shows that children are reading less and having negative attitudes (消极的态度) to reading but also shows the relationship (关系) between this and their performance (表现) in reading tests.”
The research also finds that many children in the UK like to read e-books outside school. The percentage in 2022 was about 6% and it increased (增加) to 14% in 2023.

Do you feel down more often during the winter months? If so, you might have winter depression. It’s also known to doctors as seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
SAD usually starts in autumn or winter and ends in spring or early summer. As the weather gets colder and the days get shorter, you feel more tired, sleepy and even hopeless at times.
However, we still don’t know the exact cause (原因) of SAD. Some scientists think that hormone (激素) changes can cause this kind of depression, Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) News reported. During winter, it stays dark outside for much of the day. This causes the brain to make more melatonin (褪黑素).This hormone makes you feel sleep and less excited.
Getting more sunlight is the best way to deal with SAD. Doctors say people should spend at least some time outside every day during the winter. “Light therapy (疗法)”, or using special lamps at home to simulate (模仿) natural light, can also help.
