(One day, Gulliver was caught in a storm and his ship hit a rock, then broken. He was washed to the beach by the sea wave and soon fell asleep. When he woke up, he found himself in Lilliput and a lot of people were around him and all of the people he saw were just the same size as mice.)
The emperor spoke in such a high voice. His followers and all the ladies wore rich and beautiful clothes. The ground where they were standing looked like gold and silver cloth.
The emperor and I communicated with each other but neither of us understood a single word. I tried words from my languages—French, Spanish, Italian and Latin. No one could understand my words, even the emperor’s cleverest followers.
After about two hours of useless communication, the emperor, his wife and their servants decided to leave, and only six strong guards were left around me. This was to stop me from running away and later, they would think up ways to kill me.
These six guards were trying to give me some punishment. To scare them. I put five of them in my pocket. Then I pretended(假装) to eat the sixth man. The poor man shouted terribly when he saw my knife in my hand. But I only cut the binding(捆绑物) around his hands. Then I put him on my feet and let him go. I lifted the other five men out of my pocket and put them gently on the ground, too.
The people and soldiers were very surprised at what I did. They told the emperor about it quickly. After hearing this, the emperor ordered his men to make a bed for me to have a rest and they had to put six hundred of theirs together to make one for me. It seemed that they changed their idea of killing me.

There’s something great about buying a plant, taking care of it and actually having it survive (存活) for more than a week or two. However, a woman found that a plant she had been taking care of for two years was actually made out of plastic.
Caelie Wilkes shared her story on her Facebook page, “I’ve had this beautiful succulent (多肉植物) for about two years now. I was so proud of this plant. It was full and had a beautiful colour, just a perfect plant. I had put it in my kitchen window. I had a watering plan for it. If someone else tried to water my plant, I would be unhappy because I just wanted to keep good care of it. I loved my plant very much.”
Unluckily, when she decided to transplant the plant to a new flowerpot (花盆), she had a shocking discovery.
“I went to pull it from the original (原来的) plastic container, and found this plant was fake (假的),” she wrote. “I put so much love into this plant! I washed its leaves. I tried my hardest to keep it looking its best, and it’s completely plastic! How did I not know this?”
Wilkes, a stay-at-home mum, shared photos of the plant, which does look real from the top. Once pulled from the container, however, it’s clearly not alive.

①Then one day I was in the kitchen here, when I saw him hurrying down the hill, waving his stick and shouting for me. “I’ve got it,” he cried. as he came in, “I’ve got it at last.” He showed me the end of his stick. It was white. “See that, Millie?” “Chalk! It’s chalk underneath, isn’t it?”
“So?” I said.
“You know the famous White Horse on the hillside at Uffington, the one they carved out of the chalk a thousand years ago? That horse never died, did it? It’s still alive, isn’t it? Well, that’s what we’re going to do, so he will never be forgotten. We’ll carve The White Prince out on the hillside—he’ll be there forever, and he’ll be white forever too.”
“It’ll take a bit of time, won’t it?” I said.
“We’ve got plenty, haven’t we?” he replied, with the same smile he had smiled at me when he was a ten-year-old boy asking me if he could come back and mend my kite for me.
② Every spare hour we had, we were up there scraping(刨土) away with spades(铲子), and we had buckets(桶) to carry away the earth. It was hard, back-breaking work, but it was a labour of love. We did it, Bertie and I, we did it together-paws, claws, tail, mane, until he was complete and perfect in every detail.
③It was just after we’d finished that the butterflies first came. We noticed that when the sun comes out after the rain, in the summer, the butterflies-Adonis Blues, they are, I looked them up-come out to drink on the chalk face. Happy Rain on a Spring Night —Du Fu Good rain knows its time right; O’er wild lanes dark cloud spreads; It will fall when comes spring. In boat a lantern looms. With wind it steals in night; Dawn sees saturated reds; Mute, it moistens each thing. The town’s heavy with blooms. Translated by Xu Yuanchong |
This famous poem, with four couplets, was written by Du Fu (712-770, Tang Dynasty) when he was living and farming in Chengdu. His farming experience taught him to be thankful to nature.
The very first word, “good”, shows the poet’s joy and love for the spring rain. The rain is good because it “knows” the proper time to come. Here the poet uses personification, as if the rains were smart enough to come in time for the farmer’s busy season.
When the rain comes, it appears during the night without making any noise. Unlike the summer storms, the spring rain finishes its task without being known.
In the third couplet, the poet describes a peaceful scene to us. In the night sky, the clouds look dark and heavy. It’s a sign that there will be enough rain during the night. The light from the riverboat makes the dark scene a bit livelier.
Lastly, the poet starts to imagine. Tomorrow morning, he thinks, the city of Chengdu will become beautiful when all of the flowers bloom(盛开)after the rain.
