One day, a little boy comes to a store and says to the clerk (店员), “I want to buy twelve exercise books (练习簿) of six cents (美分) each and nine pencils of ten cents each. How much is that all?”

“No, thank you. I don’t want to buy anything,” the boy looks at the piece of paper and says politely. “This is my math homework. Thank you very much. Can I take it away?”

Nancy and Julia are 14 years old and go to school in London. But they weren’t at school last week—they were doing work experience. This is when young people spend a few days doing a job. They don’t make money, but they work hard and learn about the world of work. Nancy’s job was in a cafe and Julia worked for a TV company. We asked them to tell us all about it. | |
I was really happy about working in a cafe, because I’d like to be a cook one day. But I didn’t do any cooking at all. Instead I served food and drinks to the customers, cleaned the tables and washed the floor. The cafe opened at 7 a.m. and closed at 6 p.m, but my working hours were 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. The staff were friendly, but we didn’t have much time for talking. We were all really busy! Nancy | I worked in the office of a TV company. At first, I was upset about that. My plan was to work in a TV studio, not in an office. But the staff were all very nice to me, and I learned a lot about the business. I started at 10 a.m. and finished at 6 p.m. In the morning, I opened all the letters. Then I helped my boss with different jobs. Sometimes I answered the phone. Other times he asked me to use the computer to look for information he needed. I was often so busy that I only had ten minutes for lunch! Julia |

What would you do if you spilled(使洒出)your coffee on your desk? Many of us would probably immediately begin cleaning up the desk. German artist Stefan Kuhnigk, however, thinks differently. He has used coffee stains(污渍) to create(创造) his world of art.
It all started in 2011. One day, Kuhnigk accidentally spilled his coffee on a piece of paper. Instead of(代替;而不是) throwing the paper away, he looked at the coffee stain for a while. The stain seemed to look back at him. The artist picked up his pen and started to draw. Half an hour later, his first coffee monster(怪物) was born.
Since then, Kuhnigk has never put his pen down. Over the last nine years, he has drawn more than 500 monsters. Some of them are lovely. But some have sharp(锋利的) teeth and look evil. Kuhnigk also writes a short story for each of his monsters. Many people like Kuhnigk’s funny creations. They say the monsters and their stories always make them laugh.
So the next time you spill your coffee or something else, don’t immediately clean it up. It’s your chance(机会) to be an artist, too!
