There are fantasy stories set in worlds of fairies and wizards, and there are ones set in the real world. Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island is the latter, a tale about a young person like you or your classmates. It takes place in a world like yours, but the most exciting things happen. You don’t always need magic to tell a magical story!
Jim Hawkins, an English boy, first learns about treasure hidden on an island by the pirate Captain Flint. He then gets the chance to join a voyage with Captain Smollett in hopes of finding the treasure.
One of the crew members is a man called “Long” John Silver. Jim finds out that the one-legged John is a pirate who knows about the treasure and wants it for himself. Silver persuades others on the ship to join him in a mutiny.
Jim tells Captain Smollett about Silver. Once on the island, Jim sees just how dangerous Silver is as he watches Silver murder another pirate.
While wandering the island, Jim meets a half-mad soul named Ben Gunn. When Captain Flint left his treasure behind, he also left Ben.
Silver gets control over the expedition but the other pirates turn on him, just as Silver turned on Captain Smollett. Silver and Jim, both captives now, have to work together if they want to escape.
Although he is a criminal, Silver shows he can also be brave. He is not entirely evil, but has a mixture of both good and evil qualities.
Jim learns from the mission that people will kill and betray their friends for money. But he also understands that people are sometimes more than they seem to be on the surface.
