Born in Claremore, Oklahoma, a small town near Tulsa, Page once dreamed of a career is commercial art. Her first job in the art department at a local radio station soon led to her performing 15-minute program on her own.

At the age of 20, Page was discovered by big-hand leader Jack Rael, who gave up his job to become her manager. The next year, she signed her first recording contract with Mercury Records and enjoyed her first hit record soon. She stayed with Mercury for the next 14 years and recorded hit after hit including: “With My Eyes Wide Open, I’m Dreaming” and “Old Cape Cod”.

Her last hit was “Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte”, recorded for the Bette Davis movie of the same name. And then, there was “Doggie in the Window”. The creative tune was a huge hit, but with its repeated barking sounds and silly lyrics, the song has been used by many people as an example of all that was wrong with pop music in the early 1950s.

Throughout the 1950s, Patti Page made regular appearances on a variety of television shows and in 1957 she was chosen to host the musical program “The Big Record’’. The following year, Page appeared in her own CBS television series “The Patti Page Show’’. She continued to record and perform into the 21st century, most recently releasing an album of songs for children, a Christmas record, and a new “best of” collection.

Besides music, Patti Page did a bit of acting. She co-starred with the Oscar-winning Burt Lancaster in “Elmer Gantry”, and also starred on stage in the musical play “Annie Get Your Gun”.

The kids had different ideas. They took photos of empty refrigerators, discarded（丢弃的）face masks, and at-home haircuts.

Tristan Kaos Green, 17, decided to photograph an empty school courtyard（院子）.“I was thinking about the feeling I had when I first came back to school after COVID had happened. None of the faces I used to see were there anymore,” Green said. “It was kind of scary, and lonely. ”

In his photo, Green is alone, wearing a face mask, with his school ID around his neck and his backpack over one shoulder. The photo has a cold look and feel.

Burke said he often discusses how to come up with interesting ideas in class. “Observe（观察） your community, observe yourself, ” he tells his students. He was surprised by how deep his students’ ideas were.

Caitlyn Jaryszak photographed her 2-year-old sister. She is seen wearing a face mask and holding an expandable（可膨胀的） ball. The picture gives the sense that the little girl is in a cage.

Caitlyn wanted to show how much her youngest sister’s life has been limited by the COVID-19. “It’s changed her whole life so far,” she said. “I feel like she hasn’t been able to explore. ”

Burke believes that this task has helped his students connect with each other. “It also helps them face the difficulty. I’m anxious, but I see you’re anxious,” Burke said.

Perfect paintings on “cat street” walls.

Welcome to the “cat street” ! There you are welcomed by huge “cats” !

Fangbang Middle Road is an old street in Shanghai. It has been under demolition (拆迁) since 2018 and was empty for a long time. Recently, it has been turned into a “cat street”—there are all kinds of huge wall paintings of cat pictures. And many local people and tourists came to the street to take photos with the cat pictures.

The wall paintings are created by artist Tango and his team. It is part of the Bund Art Season.There are paintings of more than 30 pet cats. And you can see their names and introductions alongside. The “cat street” is about 600 meters long buildings. Along the way, you and the cats are looking at each other.

Shi Er has a cat named Tuanzi. She was excited when she took Tuanzi to the street and saw the paintings of the cats. “Tuanzi” is a social butterfly and she is not afraid of people. “ I want to let her see herself on the wall.” She said.“ The old buildings are disappearing, and I feel sad about it. It’s a great idea to paint cats on the walls to make people take a last look at the buildings.”

Xie’s photos also show the great work being done to protect wildlife in China. He wants everyone to see how beautiful and important these animals are.
