He was a journalist (记者) and a political critic (评论家). But to most people, he is the most influential martial arts novelist in the Chinese-speaking world.

During his lifetime, Louis Cha Leung-yung, better known by his pen name Jin Yong, wrote 15 martial arts novels. Over 300 million copies of his books have been sold around the world. He also created some of the most famous characters in the history of Chinese literature, including Guo Jing, Wei Xiaobao and Linghu Chong.

Jin Yong was not the first person to write about the martial arts world known as jianghu, but it is believed that he has written some of its best stories. His works were not only a joy for people to read, but also helped to shape Chinese people’s spirit and values in recent years.

Jin Yong once said, “Wuxia (martial arts novels) is not so much about wu (kung fu), but mainly about xia, something of bravery, justice (正义) and self-sacrifice (自我牺牲).” These values have been passed on to generations of Chinese through his books as well as the countless movies and TV series that have been adapted from his novels.

Jin Yong’s books are not only about heroes who fight for justice. They also show people the beauty of almost every aspect of Chinese culture.

“It is difficult to talk about Jin Yong’s cultural influence. He turns novels into an encyclopedia of Chinese history, medicine, geography, mathematics...” Boston University professor Petrus Liu said.

Jin Yong once said that he hoped people would still read his books even 100 or 200 years after his death. It is probably safe to say that as long as the noble (高尚的) qualities mentioned in his stories never die out, neither will his great works themselves.

If you are looking to get a better understanding of the world around you, chemistry is the perfect subject to study. It’s a study of matter (物质), its properties—ways in which it behaves in special conditions, and how it interacts with everything around it. At the heart of all the discoveries, such as medicine, cooking, and several other areas, is one important table that organizes elements based on their atomic number and chemical properties: the periodic table.

Although the first periodic table was published in 1869, it was a work in progress for hundreds, if not thousands of years.

Since ancient times, people have been interested in elements such as gold, tin, iron and copper (which are written as Au, Sn, Fe and Cu in the table) in their natural forms. They were dug up from the ground and used to make jewelry, guns, coins, and many other things. Over time, people became more curious about these metals and how they were made up. In ancient Greece, Aristotle and other philosophers said things were made from the elements of earth, water, fire and air. For years, this idea was accepted. Then people began to consider this idea again during the Age of Enlightenment.

In 1661, Irish scientist Robert Boyle described an element as something that “cannot be broken down into a simpler matter by a chemical reaction”. Over a century later, Antone-Laurent de Lavoisier, Father of Chemistry, would publish the first modern textbook on chemistry. In it, he listed some matter which he believed should be divided as elements into two groups: metals and non-metals. Although his work wasn’t completely correct, it represented a big step forward at that time.

Over the next century, scientists started to divide the elements into different groups depending on their properties and atomic weights. However, it is Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev who is usually believed as the first person to make a periodic table. Although other scientists had handed in tables, they were finally refused by the scientific community because they were short of details. Mendeleev put all of the elements in a proper order according to their atomic mass. He was even smart enough to leave empty spaces for elements which hadn’t been discovered at the time. Although Mendeleev’s periodic table wasn’t perfect, it set the way or order which is similar to the one used today.

1. Why did people first become interested in elements?
A.Many people wanted to be like a scientist.
B.They wanted to use metals to make things.
C.People in ancient times was crazy about science.
D.They thought chemistry are useful for everything.
2. The writer mentioned Antonie-Laurent de Lavoisie _________.
A.to advise us to respect the great chemistB.to remind us to pay attention to his contribution
C.to require us to care about the historyD.to encourage us to discover and think
3. What can we learn from the passage?
A.The influence of chemistry is the easiest to see in the real world.
B.Aristotle was spoken highly of during the Age of Enlightenment.
C.Mendeleev created the table and many other scientists admired it.
D.Robert Boyle was the one who wrote down every element on Earth.
4. This passage is mainly about _________.
A.how the table developed       B.when the table first appeared
C.what the table is likeD.why the table is popular

【推荐2】Have you ever eaten a whole packet of biscuits when you were planning to only have one? Or have you stayed up much later than you planned, or even all night, having “just one more” try in a game? Both of these are examples of mindlessness. When we live this way, we are not fully awake and not fully living our lives.

When we are mindful, we are different. We are conscious of our thoughts, our actions and what is happening around us. We might notice a beautiful sunset or really listen carefully to what a friend is saying, rather than planning what we’re going to say next. We are also clear about our own feelings and thoughts. So we are consciously deciding what to pay attention to, we are not worrying about the past or planning for the future and we are not trying to control or stop our thoughts or feelings—we’re just noticing them.

For most people, life is getting busier and more stressful ( 有压力的).

Technology means that we always have something to do and there isn’t much opportunity to just “be”. People are often doing two or three things at the same time: texting while watching TV, or even looking at phones while walking.

Research shows that mindfulness reduces stress. It can help you to focus, to have a better memory and to think more clearly. It can also help you to manage pain better and to improve sleep, and it can even help you to lose weight because you won’t eat that whole packet of biscuits without thinking!

A very simple technique that you can try right now is to close your eyes for a few minutes and count how many sounds you can hear. This will help you to focus on what is happening right now. Another technique is to focus on a piece of food. Instead of eating it without thinking, notice how it feels and how it tastes.

Both of these techniques help you to slow down and focus on the present moment, as Jon Kabat Zinn says, mindfulness is: “Paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, and without judging.”

1. Why does the writer ask two questions in the first paragraph?
A.To predict the influence of stress.B.To describe the modern way of life.
C.To introduce the topic of mindfulness.D.To show the importance of healthy habits.
2. The underlined words “be conscious of” in Paragraph 2 probably mean “________”.
A.be ready forB.know something well
C.be careful withD.take something seriously
3. Which of the following is an example of mindfulness?
A.Listening to the birds singing with patience.
B.Having potato chips as much as you’d like to.
C.Watching a movie with a large box of popcorn.
D.Taking pictures of flowers when walking in a park.
4. Which way can’t help you to focus on the present moment?
A.Closing your eyes for a few minutes and hear the sounds around you.
B.Enjoying the food’s taste and the feeling that it brings to you.
C.Paying attention to what your friends is saying.
D.Worrying about the past and planning for the future.

【推荐3】People with the growth mindset (思维形式) believe that intelligence (智力) or skill, can be developed through effort. Basically, they believe that anyone can develop their abilities in anything.

The opposition of the growth mindset is the fixed mindset. People with this believe that intelligence and skill are innate: it’s something that we’re born with. We’re either born gifted or not; there is no room for change. Basically, they believe intelligence is fixed from birth.

All of us are a mixture of both the growth and fixed mindsets. In some areas of our lives, we operate with the growth mindset. In others, we operate with the fixed mindset. Because of this, we all wear both in different situations in our lives. Although, we should all try to wear the growth ones much more than we wear the fixed ones. But, why?

A lot of research seems to suggest that people with the growth mindset are more successful than people with the fixed mindset. For example, a study found that students who held a growth mindset were three times more likely to score in the top 20% on the test, while students with a fixed mindset were four times more likely to score in the bottom 20%. Another study found that when 7th graders participated in a growth mindset program, they were able to avoid a drop in grades which usually happens in middle school.

People with the growth mindset are much more resilient (有适应力的) which allows them to deal with challenging and difficult situations. Because they prioritize (优先考虑) learning over failure, people with the fixed mindset don’t, want to challenge themselves because they believe talent and intelligence are fixed. They look at failure as an assault (攻击), failure once means failure always.

We know that the brain can continue to learn until the day we die, thanks to the field of neuroscience (神经科学). It also seems quite clear that people must work hard and keep trying even when they meet difficulties if they want to be successful. So the growth mindset seems to be a much more correct view of reality than the fixed mindset. People with the growth mindset are living in greater accordance (符合) with relality than people with the fixed mindset. They can make truer decisions while a person with the fixed mindset lives in a greater state of delusion (妄想). So, now you know why the growth mindset is important. Keep in mind that it takes a lot of effort to develop and that it will always be a hard fight to a avoid falling into the fixed mindset.

1. People with the growth mindset ________.
A.think learning and developing are more important
B.believe they are born with intelligence and skill
C.are afraid of making mistakes and taking risks
D.are less likely to deal with difficult situations
2. The word “innate” in Paragraph 2 probably means “ ________”.
A.changeableB.naturalC.trainableD.growing
3. The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.if people fail once in their life, they may never become successful
B.if people operate with two mindsets, they are more likely to succeed
C.if people can challenge themselves, they will have intelligence and skill
D.if people understand the real world correctly, they may make true decisions
4. What’s the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To introduce the ways to develop mindsets.
B.To discuss why people have different mindsets.
C.To compare the growth mindset with the fixed mindset.
D.To encourage people to operate with the growth mindset.
