Several years ago, I was flying home from Chicago after a business trip. I was excited to get home to my family after being away for a whole week. I got to the airport early to wait for my flight.
It was a bright, sunny morning as the plane took off. After about three minutes, I noticed something that was very scary. There was a big fire on the wing (翼) of the plane. Everyone in the plane was very nervous. Nobody was talking.
The flight attendant (乘务员) came on the speaker and said we would be landing. She told us the landing would be hard, so we needed to support ourselves and hold on tight. She sounded very brave, but her face showed fear.
I was supporting myself and trying not to be afraid when there was a big sound. Passengers pulled together and hoped for something lucky. At the same time, the captains were trying to deal with all kinds of problems so that the plane could landed safely. Later, the plane had hit something. I found out it was water around. We were very lucky to be alive.
There was another passenger next to me who didn’t seem to know what to do. I caught her hand and pulled her with me towards the emergency exit (紧急出口). The next thing I knew, we were standing on the wing looking at the river. We all followed directions.
Soon the rescue (救援) boat pulled up to take us to the bank. The rescuers said we were calm and brave. I hugged one of them and thanked him for saving my life. He told me to thank ourselves and the captain, because ________.
I was so happy to see my family when I finally got home. I felt lucky to meet those brave people on that plane.

Cindy is not the first child who died on an amusement park ride. 25 years ago, the mother of a 14-year-old girl waited to pick up her daughter outside Worlds of Fun. Laura Barry never saw her daughter Rosie alive again.
“My heart goes out to the Smith family more than they can ever possibly know,” said Barry. She is one of the few people who truly know the hurt that family is feeling.
In 1995, Rosie’s mom said that something went wrong on the Timber Wolf the night Rosie died. Police found no evidence(证据). Two men told the police that they saw Rosie standing before she fell out of the car.
“I couldn’t believe that such a thing could happen still and again,” said Barry. She believes Rosie’s death should have been a wakeup call for amusement park safety.
She finds that not much has changed in the past years. Amusement parks race to build bigger, taller, faster rides. In her opinion, amusement parks just try to bring in visitors and give them the idea that riding is good, safe and fun. She believes that parks should have put safety first.
There is no exact number of amusement park deaths each year. It is quite low according to some websites. But Barry doesn’t accept that. “My daughter was the only person that had ever been killed at Worlds of Fun in all of the years, among all of the thousands and thousands of people that went there. The number doesn’t mean anything, you know, because when your child is the one, that’s one too many,” she said.

There was once a king who wanted a special kind of horse. This horse could run 1, 000 li a day. It was called Qianlima. He sent many people to find these horses and buy them for him. After three years, nobody found him such a horse.
One day, someone new volunteered to help. Within three months, he heard about a Qianlima. He rushed to find it, but the horse was already dead. Still, he bought the bones of the horse with 500 pieces of gold.
The king was very angry. “What I want is a live horse, not the bones of a dead horse!”
The man answered calmly, “Imagine this. You’re willing to pay a high price for a dead horse, let alone(更不必说)a live one. This shows people you truly wish to buy the horses. Just wait and the horses you want will come very soon.”
That was true. Within a year, many Qianlima owners brought their horses to the king.
Guo told the king that he could see himself as the bones of the horse. “If I am valued, more talented people will be willing to serve the state,” he said. There were five girls in our family and we all had to help out. Once when I was about seven, I came out of the kitchen, “Mom, I can’t peel(削……皮) potatoes. I only have one hand.” “You get back to peel those potatoes, and don’t ever use that as an excuse for anything again!”
Of course I could peel potatoes with my good hand and my other arm. “Jenny, if you try hard enough,” she said, “you can do anything.”
Once in the second grade, our teacher had each of us race across the monkeybar(攀爬架). When it was my turn, I said “No”. Some kids laughed. I went home crying.

Doing chores is good or bad for children.
So many parents don’t know if they should give chores to their children. But I have no trouble with that. I tried to ask my children to do some simple chores when they were only three years old. They had two chores at first.
Making Me Coffee
This needed them to count out 8 spoons of coffee beans (豆) into a coffee grinder (研磨机); then grind them for 20 seconds (they had to count slowly to 20). Next, they should pour the coffee grinds into the basket; count out 8 cups of water and pour it into the machine.
As you can see, there was a math exercise behind. As they grew older, the chore (making coffee) would become more difficult.
Cleaning the Dishes
Cleaning the dishes needed three steps in our house. I let one of my children brush the dishes. The other one washed the dishes with water carefully. And I would dry and put away the dishes. Through the cleaning, they could learn how to work together. In order to make the chore interesting, I even wrote a song called “Keep the Washing Going!” My children always felt excited when they sang the song with me.
At 11 years old, they now do chores such as cleaning the floors, taking out the rubbish and giving the dog a shower every day. What makes me happy is that they can have fun when doing chores on their own.

However, he went to work at an orphanage (孤儿院) in Nepal. His first thought was to make people impressed.
“I thought that if I volunteered just once, I could retell the story over and over,” Grennan said in the Huffington Post.
However, his three-month stay in the orphanage turned into an unusual experience. It was in 2018 and Grennan had given up his job to begin a year’s long around-the-world trip. His first three months were spent in Nepal.
When he arrived in the village, he knew nothing about the children or the local culture. When he opened the gate of the Little Princes Children’s Home, he was faced by the excited children.
The young American ended up caring for 18 children. He later discovered that they were trafficked (被拐卖的) children. So he walked through the mountains with great difficulty to find the kids’ families. “I started walking with photos of the kids,” he told the Reuter’s reporter. “I would show up in villages and show photographs around. I went with 24 photos, and I found 24 families.”
At the same time, he put his heart into Nepalese culture.
Grennan said, “Volunteering is the single best way to see how the rest of the world lives.”
He also encouraged others to do what he had done. He believes that volunteering needs only making decisions to show up.
