Everyone knows that we should eat clean food. Many people think it’s important and good for health to wash the food before cooking it. However, for some food like eggs, washing can do more harm (害处).
People like to wash the shell (壳) before they cook the egg. They want to make sure there’s no dirt or germs (细菌) on the egg. But they don’t need to do this.
There is a coating (涂层) on the shell of the egg. The coating can help keep the egg away from germs. When factories do the cleaning work, they wash away the coating and put a kind of special thing on the egg shell. It is there to keep germs from coming inside the egg.
“Of course, there are germs on the egg but by washing it you make it worse. The egg shell is porous (可渗透的) , ” says health expert Amy Leigh Mercree. “And this can happen more easily when you use cold water or running water. ”
“So don’t wash eggs—save yourself some time and keep the germs where they are. ” Mercree says.

Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the phone than the world around you. They see you as the “face-down generation” and wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family. Are today’s teenagers too busy texting and taking selfies (自拍) to become successful in real life—or “IRL”, as you would say?
Other adults worry that today’s youth are spoiled and don’t want to face the challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter parents” who were always there to do everything for them. So today’s young people seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.
Does the face-down generation need a heads-up? Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’s teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They also seem to be willing to become leaders. More young people than ever volunteer to serve their communities. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls’ rights to go to school.
So if you are one of them born in the 2000s, there’s reason to be hopeful about the future. Things are looking up for the face-down generation.

On December 9th, 2021, three Chinese astronauts aboard China’s Tiangong space station gave a science class to Chinese students back on Earth.
The space environment has many special conditions that are not available on the ground, and there are many scientific experiments that can only be done in the space environment.
Use it or lose it
However, astronauts have different ways to prevent muscle loss. In class, Zhai Zhigang introduced their special spacesuits. They’re also known as “penguin suits”,
Wang Yaping showed students how she walked on a treadmill(跑步机)and rode a bicycle. In order to prevent muscle loss,
Space water is different
In space, water won’t flow downwards(向下流动)if you try to pour it into a cup.
Wang made a water film(水膜)in space. Then she added more water drops onto the film to make it a water ball. This can never happen on Earth. Why? In the zero-gravity environment,
Widespread (广泛的) and heated discussions were made among the students in class. And the students’ love for space and science will take root(植根)in their hearts.
A.the water can stay strong and the water ball will not break. |
B.That’s why astronauts usually drink water with straws(吸管). |
C.They can keep muscles trained in space. |

“If you have clean water in a clean glass, you’re fine to drink it for a day or two,” Kellogg Schwab from the Johns Hoping University Water Institute in the US told Times.
Also, there might be more microorganisms(微生物) in your water if you leave it out overnight. Microorganisms grow more quickly at room temperature.
In countries like the US and the UK, people often drink water directly from the tap(水龙头). This is OK, however, tap water cannot be stored for a long time. Most experts say that tap water has a shelf life of six months, according to Zane Satterfield from West Virginia University, the US. After six months, there is less chlorine(氯) in the water and bacteria(细菌) start to grow.
What about plastic water bottles? Schwab said people should be careful with them. If you leave a bottle of water under the sun or in a car for a long period of time, the plastic produces a chemical called BPA.
A.But you may find that it tastes strange. |
B.You’d better not drink tap water in cold winter. |
C.You might want to drink it the next morning. |
D.These microorganisms can stick to your glass. |
E.This chemical can cause heart disease and cancer. |
F.You’d better not drink the water, or you may get sick. |

Where do these websites come from? They are made by web designers (设计者). What happens when you click on a word or a picture? You are sent to another page. It’s all because of the web designer. Web designers do a lot of work by using a computer programming language (编程语言).
Is Web design all about computer programming? No. It’s about making something new. Web designers must imagine (想象) a lot when they are making a website. It must look good and be fun to use. A big part of Web design is art. They choose the best pictures and colours to make the website look good. They also write the things that you see on the website. An important part of their job is to share ideas with the website manager about how to design the website well.

And in fact, recent research has found that music can have beneficial effects (有益效果) on creativity. When it comes to other areas of performance, however, the influence of background music is more complicated (复杂的).
The idea that listening to music when working is beneficial is probably based on the so-called “Mozart effect”. Put simply, this is the finding that spatial rotation (空间旋转) perfornance is increased immediately after listening to the music of Mozart, compared to no sound at all.
How sound affects performance has been the topic of research for over 40 years, and is observed through a fact called the irrelevant sound effect (无关声音效应). To study irrelevant sound effect, volunteers in the research are asked to complete a simple task which requires them to recall a series of numbers or letters in the exact order in which they saw them. The tricky thing is being able to do this while ignoring (忽视) any background noise.
Two key characteristics of the irrelevant sound effect are required for its observation. First, the task must require the person to use their rehearsal (复述) abilities; and second, the sound must include acoustical (声学的) change. Where the sound does not change much, the performance of the task is much closer to that observed in quiet conditions.
The irrelevant sound effect itself comes from trying to deal with two sources of ordered information at the same time — one from the task and one from the sound. Unfortunately, only the former is required to successfully perform the recall task, and the effort in making sure that irrelevant order information from the sound is not dealt with actually prevents this ability.
A similar conflict is also seen when reading while in the presence of lyrical music. In this situation, the two sources of words — from the task and the sound — are in conflict. The cost is poorer performance of the task in the presence of music with lyrics.
What this all means is that whether having music playing in the background helps or prevents performance depends on the task and on the type of music, and only understanding this relationship will help people maximize their productivity levels.
