China is a nation of etiquette (礼仪). Chinese people are among the most hospitable (好客的) people in the world. If foreigners visit a Chinese family, they would be surprised at the warmth that they would receive as guests.
When you visit a Chinese family, the host usually makes tea for you. Then he will serve you snacks like biscuits or candy. Someone in the family will also chat with you, never letting you feel lonely.
At the same time, other family members will prepare a meal for you. Chinese people treat their guests with a big meal. They always present more food than the guests can eat. And the guests must be the first to eat. Perhaps one of the things that surprise Western guests most is that the Chinese host likes to pick up food for visitors, which won’t happen at Western tables. The Chinese family go out of their way to make you feel at home. As you finish eating, the host usually says, “It seems that you didn’t eat much. Please have more. ”Although you tell them you are full, they still put more food in your bowl.
Being warm and hospitable has long been an important part of Chinese culture and tradition. As Confucius (孔子) said thousands of years ago, “To meet friends from afar, how happy we are!”

Recently, many schools in Zhejiang, China, asked their students to use zuoyi(作揖)as a way of greeting. To make the body language, one usually needs to bow(鞠躬)at an angle(角度)of 30 to 45 degrees with hands folded(折叠)in the front.
It is said that the body language has a history of over 3000 years. Folding one’s hands shows others that he/she doesn’t have any weapons and doesn’t come to fight.
The rules are different for men and women. For men, the left hand is put over the right hand. But for women, the right hand is on the outer side. However, in some special situations, men and women should both do the opposite.
Many people are happy to see this greeting come back. This is not only a good way for people to stay safe during this special period, but also a great form of cultural education.

“The grass looks greener on the other side of the fence (栅栏).” That’s an old saying in English. It means that other places often look better, more interesting than the place where you live. Some people worry that young Chinese are beginning to feel that way. They see young Chinese ignoring (忽视) Chinese culture (文化) , instead, buying Japanese cartoon books, watching Korean soap operas and even celebrating western holidays.
Foreign books and soap operas are good, but Chinese writers and actors are just as good. As for holidays, Christmas is nice, but it can never have the meaning for Chinese that Spring Festival has, and the West has nothing to compare with Mid-autumn Festival. And let’s not forget the part of Chinese culture I like best: its friendliness. Not all countries are as warm as China.
It’s good to enjoy other cultures and to learn from them, but they can never replace your own culture. It’s good to look on the other side of the fence, but make sure you take a good long look. You will find that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the fence.
1. The Spring Festival is more meaningful for Chinese people.2. The saying means the place where you live looks better than other places.
3. Foreign culture can’t replace Chinese culture.
4. This passage mentioned (提及) three Chinese festivals.

There are superstitions (A fa) about some numbers in China as well. For example, the number"4"is said to be unlucky because it sounds like the Chinese word for "death". But that's just one small example of China's superstitions about numbers.
When I first came here. I was surprised to see that many websites had numbers in their names instead of letters. I soon found that this is actually a matter of convenience, as Chinese
characters(汉字)cannot be used for website addresses. They can only use numbers or the letters of the Roman alphabet.
In pinyin, the telecom company Chine Unicom is called Zhongguo Liantong. If the company used their pinyin name for their website address,it would be quite long. So instead, they use their customer service hotline number--10010.com.This is easier to type and remember.
In addition, the pronunciations of some numbers sound similar to other words in Chinese.
This makes for some clever wordplay. For example, the numbers"5-2-0"in Chinese sound similar to the pronunciation of the Chinese phrase" "I love you". Many couples choose to get married on
May 20 for this reason.
It is interesting to see how Chinese people have used numbers in so many different ways.
1. In the West, there are some other numbers that are like the number”13”2. The number"4" sounds like Chinese word for "death".
3. In China, many websites have Chinese characters in their names
4. China Unicom doesn't use "Zhongguo Liantong" as its website address because it is too long.
5. Many couples choose to get married on May 20 because they will love each other more on that day.

What you’ll need:
Five or more drinking glasses or glass bottles. Water. Wooden stick such as a pencil. If possible, you’d better do it in a small but empty room with a long table in.
Instructions:
Line the glasses up next to each other and fill them with different amounts of water. The first should have just a little water while the last should be almost full, and the ones in between should have slightly more than the first.
Hit the glass with the least amount of water and watch the sound, then hit the glass with the most water, which makes the higher sound?
Hit the other glasses and see what noise they make. See if you can get a tune going by hitting the glasses in a certain order.
What’s happening?
Each of the glasses will have a different tone when you hit with the pencil. The glass with the most water will have the lowest tone while the glass with the least water will have the highest. Small vibrations (震动) are made when you hit the glass, and this creates sound waves which travel through the water. More water means slower vibrations and a deeper tone.
1. What’s needed in the experiment according to the passage?A.Five bottles of water. | B.Seven drinking glasses. |
C.A big and empty room. | D.A pencil and a wooden stick. |
A.a tone | B.a tune | C.some vibrations | D.some water |
A.A Travelling Guide. | B.A Child Novel. | C.A Fashion Magazine. | D.A Music Textbook. |
