Bags of Love
Last year, I worked in a middle school near my mother’s house, and I stayed with her for a month. During that time, I helped her do some housework and buy some food.
After the first week, I noticed that the food was eaten up (吃光) very quickly. Then I began keeping an eye on my mum. To my surprise, I found that she would put some of the food into a paper bag and go out with it at about nine every morning. And finally, I decided to follow her. I saw her taking the food to the street children. She would also spend a lot of time talking and playing with them.
One day, I talked to a neighbour and found out that my mum was famous in the area. The children were very friendly with her and even thought of her as their own mother. Then it hit me—why wouldn’t she want to tell me about it? Was she worried that I would stop buying food if I found out?
When my mum got home, I gave her a big hug (拥抱) . I told her she didn’t need to keep it a secret from me. And she told me something about the children. Some of them lived with an old lady in a small house. Others slept on the street. For years, she was helping the poor street children by giving them food. After she told me everything, I was so moved by how selfless (无私的) she was. She helped others in need. As her son, I was so proud of my mum.
I continued (继续) to buy food for my mum after that. But I always added (增加) one more bag for her other children.

I think you can find them. Some notebooks are in the bookcase. I need the black one. My bag is in the green box under my chair. You can find two bags in the box—a red one and a black one. The black one is your father’s. The red one is mine. My jackets are in the brown wardrobe (衣柜). I need the white one. And you can see my ID card in the wardrobe, too. The English book is in my desk. Heal with Meals
A 35-year-old man, Hao Shuai, in Chongging who plans to invite 10,000 strangers to his home for dinner within 10 years has grabbed attention recently. Hao Shuai launched the project in January and has hosted free dinners in his downtown apartment in Chongging’s Yubei district. Born in a village in the district in 1986, Hao was raised with a natural love for food—his father was a chef, and his mother ran a food stall for more than 30 years. Hao said he felt depressed in the city where people seem to be moving fast and have lost the link with each other. “I decided a dinner table would do.” Hao said, adding that any sincere stranger willing to participate (参与) can sign up for dinner via the official WeChat account “Hao Shuai’s Kitchen”.

He pronounced nothing could make him feel better than sharing stores and eating up delicious food. “And if possible, we get like-minded friends. I felt the kindness of strangers and the beauty of life when a group of interesting souls gathered,” said Liu Jan, a hotpot restaurant chef, who joined in Hao Shuai’s Kitchen in April.
Hao hopes to link participants from all walks of life in a mutual-aid community, to offer help and warmth, and is considering to host a story-sharing event. “Those touching inspiring life stories could heal a lot of people.” he said.

One thing I can tell you is that, once you’ve started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see something when you’re riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about “How would I say them in English?” At first, it might be with simple words or phrases but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. Now I’m in America, and for most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It’s amazing how much this helps.
For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I didn’t want to make mistakes. Finally I got it over. And while traveling In America, I’d try to hang out with friends who couldn’t speak Chinese, so that I’d have no choice but to speak English. And I also decide that if I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then so be it. After that my English started improving much more quickly.
Besides, it maybe a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you’re writing and give you some suggestions for improvement.
