In Chinese culture, gift giving is a way of remembering special days. But there are some taboos (禁忌) on gift giving.

Chinese people usually don’t give a clock to each other. A clock sounds as zhong in Chinese. It means “the end”. So, giving someone a clock means “Your time is up.”

If clocks aren’t OK, maybe buying some fruit is a good idea. But remember not to buy pears. A pear sounds as li in Chinese. That means separation. The umbrella also sounds the same as the word for separation in Chinese. Therefore, pears and umbrellas aren’t good.

If you want to celebrate a happy moment, prepare some flowers. But don’t buy the chrysanthemum (菊花), because it is often used to remember the passing of a loved one.

Four sounds like si in Chinese, which means death (死亡). You shouldn’t give gifts in sets of four. When giving lucky money, the number shouldn’t include a four such as 40 or 400. Chinese people like to give lucky money equal to certain “lucky numbers”. For example,“520”means“I love you”,“1314”means“forever love”, “666”means“hoping everything goes well for you”and“888”means“wishing you wealth”.

At last, it’s better to wrap (包装) your gift with paper in red or other warm colors. Black and white are considered unlucky colors.

【推荐1】China and Western countries have something different in cultures about certain animals, but when it comes to pigs, we have the same idea—pigs are ugly, lazy and stupid.

Just look at some Chinese sayings such as “Boiling a dead pig” and “A pig looking in the mirror is still a pig.” And in English, there are some expressions like “Eating like a pig” and “Pigs might fly.” None of them are Complimentary.

However, pigs have some good qualities(品质). They are even as smart as dogs and elephants. They have good memories. And they know whether people treat them well or not.

A UK cartoon, Peppa Pig is a most popular cartoon. The four members in the pig family teach children from all around the world about love, friendship and the value of family. And a Chinese cartoon film, the Adventures of Mc Dull, is also very famous. In the cartoon, the little pig, Mc Dull, has a heart of gold and always works hard towards his dreams. Most people want quick success, but Mc Dull is slow and patient, and not afraid of failing again and again.

Maybe when we talk about pigs next time, we should think of their good qualities.

【推荐3】If a person wants to be a gentleman (君子), he should pay attention to what he does and says. Then what are the rules for a gentleman on words and actions? Let’s find out the answers from Confucius, one of the greatest teachers in ancient China.

In the West, some people believe that how someone says something is more important than what he says. However, Confucius didn’t think so. He believed that gentlemen should choose their words carefully, even if that may make people feel bored.

Confucius believed that words are important so they should follow etiquette (规矩). But he also put forward his idea of what gentlemen should do: work hard. He said that gentlemen should not be lazy and need to focus (集中注意力) on their work to improve themselves.

These rules for gentlemen’s words and actions have influenced Chinese people for a long time. Today, many Chinese people still prefer to have a practical (务实的) spirit rather than saying pleasant words.

Of course, as culture has developed over time, we should also view (看待) his words critically (批判性地). Choosing our words and actions according to the situation is also a form of wisdom (智慧).
